I like the take a list and contact you when they're in stock style in order of list position.  No money down needed as the queue should be ample to cater for anyone that pulls out with the limited stock they seem to supply.  That's how they do it here.

That's how my local dealer took orders with the Manticore roll out. He put your name on a list, wanted NO money down and would let you know when they were in his shop. If you backed out... no problem.

  2. When I had the Garrett Infinium, the coil was smooth on the bottom.  I used the cover that came with it but as soon as the warranty was over, I coated the bottom and sides with a white marine grade epoxy. Over time when some of the edges of the epoxied coil would wear thin another touch up coat on those edges did the trick. No longer any build up with sand or skid plate removal. I would have done this with the Nox, but the bottom design makes it impossible to coat. This goes for the Manticore as well.

My experience detecting around Colchester at least is that the ground is moderate at worst.

Easy mineralization test. Drop magnet in soil. Pick up. The more magnetite you see, the worse the ground. In compacted soils you will have to work the magnet around into the soil or make a loose pile of dirt.

This super magnet was literally dropped onto a Tahoe beach and picked back up. It was clean when dropped…

Hey Steve... You made me think of how much magnetite is in some locations in the NY Adirondack Mountains. These are a few before and after pictures of a water hunt in one of the lakes up there 2 Summers ago. You would only have to dig in the water a few times and the magnet was full. When I lived there full time my Excalibur was almost useless on some of the beaches as it would hardly get any depth at all. That was the main reason I went to hunting only with a PI, and that was the Infinium. What a huge difference that made.

  4. Eight weeks ago, a lady lost one of her rings that went to her wedding set. She posted on Facebook approximately where it was lost, and it was right where the surf was breaking. The ring was part of a 3-ring set, all with diamonds and marked 19K, and they all came off at once. She was able to recover 2 of them immediately but couldn't find the last ring. The diamonds were from her mother's wedding ring, and she was devastated. I was there the next morning in a very rough surf, hunting the shoreline and nothing turned up. It was a short hunt as the waves were blasting me into the shore and I thought I am going to break my machine if I keep going. The surf was bad for a few days, and nothing was to be found. I told her not to give up as we can find rings that were lost for years. Every so often I would go to this beach and hunt that particular area, but no ring. Last night there was a nice low tide and a 2-foot cut in the sand. I went hunting just with the intention of hopefully finding something good not even thinking about her ring. The water was too rough to get in and as I was walking the wet sand, in the general area where her ring was lost. I got a nice "10" reading on the Manticore and a ring was in the scoop. It was only several inches under the sand and could have been found by just about any other machine. It was the lost ring from 8 weeks ago. So, I would say that it had probably sank almost 2 feet in the surf and sand and because of the 2-foot cut and extra low tide it was now found. Quite a few people had searched for it earlier but gave up. I found a few green coins and a heavily encrusted silver cross too. Went back this morning but it was pretty much sanded in. Here are a few pictures of the ring and return.

  5. I haven't posted in a while so thought I'd show some jewelry found with the manticore. All were found in the salt water with the exception of the silver ring found in the wet sand. The chain and ring were found in the same hunt making for a great day, both 10K. I was really surprised to find the chain, 5.7gms, in the saltwater as they sure are elusive! The tiny thin ring is 14K and weighs only 1.2 grams. Too bad the other jewelry was junk but still made for a fun hunt. They were found over the past couple weeks. I do find lots of other stuff but don't want to bore you with too much junk. LOL

This hollow, 14K gold earring was found in the saltwater using the surf mode with a sensitivity at 21. It wasn't deep and was found in the first scoop with an ID of 2.

I was surprised how well it sounded off when the coil went over it, seeing it is only one-half gram and the loop was open.

The gold earring is on the bottom of the photo, with some junk stuff on top. It hit pretty good on the studs also.

I assume you're referring to All Terrain (AT) Low Conductors (LC).  It's been discussed here a bit (and from the manual) that this mode is optimized for small targets.  I don't know if that's your optimum settings for the size targets you are finding.  AT High Conductors (HC) might be best and AT General would also be in my arsenal, particularly if I wanted the extra run time compared to AT-HC's 20-25% hit on battery drain.  It's not a huge deal but since you said the targets you're finding are deep you might actually be able to take advantage of those other modes' extra depth (under the right conditions, of course -- not a blanket statement for everyone, everywhere).

Obviously you're in a good spot when you find a USA Large Cent, so maybe even more oldies are lurking.  Hope you have more time to detect there before heading home.

Yes. AT Low Conductors. I’ve played a little with the AT-HC but some intermittent EMI from nearby power lines makes the HC mode more noisy than LC. I’m able to run sensitivity higher in LC but will try AT General soon. Wife says we didn’t drive 1500 miles so I could metal detect every minute.  Guess she didn’t get my memo. 😆

I'd track down the text on that bicycle plate, that would be interesting, and no worries about the large cent, just be glad you got one, they are often unreadable but the bust can give you an idea of age. Look up large cents.

I like relic hunting best of all, glad you're enjoying it. 🙂

    Found this information.
This was the name given to a type of light-weight bicycle made by the thousands in Syracuse by E.C. Stearns & Co. Edward C. Stearns transformed his father’s hardware and wagon factory to a bicycle factory. An excellent rider himself, Stearns opened his business on Oneida Street in 1888 and eventually watched it grow to have four plants in Syracuse and 3,500 employees. Additionally, the company had plants in Toronto, Canada and Germany. At one time, Stearns was the largest manufacturer of bicycles in the world.

Great hunt! 👍 You got some excellent relics.

Your Dandy button is made of Tombac, and old combination of copper and zinc, it may have lead and tin and arsenic as well. You'll notice the engraving might be irregular just slightly, many were hand engraved. Far less expensive to make than brass buttons. They are from the period of 1770 to 1795 if they are larger than 30mm. They were in use until about 1815, after 1795 they were generally smaller than 30mm. They were a status symbol.

Thanks for the great information. The bicycle plate reads Empire State Express 999. I’ll look into it. So far 2 large cents, 3 unidentified coins? , and 5 buttons.

    Nice finds!

I found an incised 'dandy' button exactly like the one in your second pic here in southern England - I wonder if they were made in the same place?

A very similar button was found in this area a few years ago: https://www.sussexexpress.co.uk/heritage-and-retro/retro/pictures-from-the-big-dig-in-petworth-park-in-august-2015-which-uncovered-some-exciting-finds-4010584?page=2

Thanks for that information! I didn't know they were called Dandy Buttons. I'm researching their history and it's really interesting. No idea where it was made. I guess by measuring it you can get an approximation of its age.

I'm jealous. Guess I need to plan a trip to fix that. I've always wanted to find old stuff but never have tried.

Good hunting. Now you have a few relics to add to your jewelry collection. 🙂

I grew up in NYS and back in the late 70's started metal detecting. So many places had never seen a metal detector and it was wide open hunting. Schools, parks, church grounds, etc. had your pockets bulging with old silver coins! It's not like that anymore. But these new detectors are opening up old hunted out areas again. The place I'm hunting is virgin ground.

  12. Up in NY for a couple weeks and hunting some property that is quite old. This is my first time dirt hunting with the Manti, so I'm playing it cautious and primarily digging good signals and hunting in LC mode. Here are some finds that are pretty impressive to me. I've been saltwater beach hunting up until now, but this is FUN!

First and second picture I was hunting near the old house. More newer things but I did find a large cent, can't read any dates on anything.

Third picture is a nice old marked button in a field a few hundred feet from the house. This area is where I'm finding more old coins and buttons. No dates can be read so I need to find a silver coin... Hopefully!

Trying to post multiple pics off a laptop that I am also learning!!   Will post more later as I learn more.

Just looking at the pictures as they got posted. They are not in order so the first picture shows some of todays' morning finds. Second to last is from near the house.

It is the same .. first edition, if you got one that works and... it last for you... it will find the gold in the right place and if used correctly. That's a lot of variables to get aligned, which many found they could not get all working together and that equals many unhappy AQ owners. Its up to Fisher to correct their end if they want to turn this around, and selling the remaining "First Edition" is not what a company should be doing if it cared about their customers.

I was more than pleased with how my AQ performed when working properly. It was the 5 returns for repair before the warranty was even up. Too risky for me to keep as a reliable machine. I think faulty pots were 3 of the returns.

  14. Haven't had any problems with the shaft. The 2 locks are adjustable as to how tight you want them, and it is solid as a rock in tough water / wave conditions. I like how it collapses into itself for storage, as I am traveling with it now and it stores nicely without creating a large "footprint".
