  1. I share a similar understanding of the 15, 11 and 6 for the Equinox.  That can be shown in some of my posts from the beginning.  I hunt 90+% of my time on beaches around Santa Monica Bay that has a black sand line from the waves and a wet zone where the wave energy leaves some of the heavier good targets.

My large CTX coil seems to do 'better' than the Equinox 15 but I rarely use the 3030 any more.  I should because I think I would walk faster with it and not 'miss' targets.  I have mentioned to Simon on a number of occasions that I think the 15" Equinox coil is a finicky coil.  I think it is better with the latest update but as has been noted I don't know that it gives me much additional depth over my 11" coil.

I have upped my volume for negative targets and on my beaches I can dig quarters at 14-15 inches.  In order to do that I also dig a lot of bobby pins and iron trash like tent stakes which are nearly invisible as they don't have massive response even tho they are big.  I can eliminate some of the black sand by staying 'quick' at around 6 and I keep my sensitivity almost always at 23.  I have learned to swing speed hunt certain beaches.  If I find a target (the waves make some pockets) I really slow down for that and crusty quarters.  My gridding will find more that patch hunting.  I do look for the patches and then swing differently.

Last night I found a couple of cheap rings and they were 'tiny targets' that I would have missed walking faster.  I listen for the fringe signals and bring my 11 back to a good target better than the fringe of the 15 I guess I would say.

All that being said, I've found some good targets with a limited amount of time with the 6" coil on the same beaches.  It provides a target ID with less variance than the other two coils and I can dig down to 8 inches.  I do it once in a while just to have 'fun' and I extend the handle length and swing it over a wider arc so my 'footprint' is larger because the fringe works for me also.

On rare occasions I'll set up down to 4 but normally now I like the 11, 23 and stay at 6 with FE and F2 off and stay in Beach 1.  Sometimes I'll go into 1 ft of water but that is about the max.

  2. The night after I found the targets above I found a cheap ring and this necklace.  It is a 32" .925 small link chain made by Thomas Sabo.  I looked up the skulls and they appear to be from that company also.  They were colored silver, gold and copper with most of the 'copper' sloughing off.  I think they are made of silver also but I'll have to have them shot with and XRF to make sure.  The total weight is 20g!

  3. Will 2020 be the year of the cliche product?  Will we see products capitalizing on the 'better vision' theme?  Have you already seen them?  haha  😋

What marketing slogan would you use for a new detector, coil, pointer, pick, pan, 4x4, etc., etc.  ???  Here are a couple that come to mind ...

    White's Detectors ... clearly Better in 2020!

Everyone will have 2020 nugget vision with the new Minelab ...

New in 2020, glasses for your detector ... get our clear boost signal enhancer.

  4. That is a similar response that I had and reported about new coils directly from Minelab (none planned).  The second part of that answer has begun a rumor about a new detector next year.  Other people on this forum follow the registrations of names and such so I guess we'll see if that happens in 2020 also.

All companies will be missing marketing opportunities if they fail to make a new and 'clearly better' 2020 product.  I'll start that as a separate thread.

  5. I have looked and looked for a link to the videos but I'm still not seeing it.  Today I got an email from the author and there is a link to a very similar description but it also includes some maps.

  6. Two nights ago I went out to the beach and tried a place that I have had good success.  I got there and discovered that I didn't bring my headphones.  I decided to go anyway and just use the 800's speaker.  That proved to be very difficult.  I found a few targets but I was not able to hunt in my normal way.  The waves were loud and I could not hear clearly no matter what setting I tried.  I did end up in 5 tone mode rather than 50 but it was still a challenge to get the few targets that I did get.  I am a headphone guy, especially at the beach.

Tonight I went out (I had the headphones) and found a little patch with my 3 hour hunt.  It was not a great quantity but the quality was good.  I got one 14k/4.2g gold ring and a stainless steel ring.  There is a cheap chain, a portion of a Kennedy half dollar pendant, an earring and a couple of chain rings.  My sensitivity was best at 23 and I switched between 5/50.

My clues were the crusty quarters and the tent stakes.  When I found those I slowed down to a grid and overlapped, perpendicular to the beach above the black sand line.  The stainless steel ring, chain and earring were within 10 feet of each other at about 8 inches deep.

  7. The 5000 like many other detectors is able to be manually and automatically changed to a low noise channel.  Many of the new hearing aids these days are a form of bluetooth adjustments without the need for an interfering frequency.  It might not be possible to test before you buy.

I would look into the possibility that the bluetooth hearing aids could work directly with a detector like the Equinox.  Someone here will have more info than me.

  8. Thanks for the reply Ringmoney. 🍀  That is a beautiful nugget.  :nugget:

Which Nox did you get? :minelab:

When I look at that nugget I can see that we have failed a bit at our job here of telling people how to 'safely' find nuggets in different parts of the world.  The lesson about removing your thumb 👍 before you swing and strike with a pick ⛏️ must be repeated.  Just take your time and don't get so excited🤩 when you see the Nox numbers on gold next time.  The nugget can wait for your fingers to get out of the way.  🎷

Irish 🇮🇪 gold rush to follow.  (There won't be any prospectors left in New Zealand 🇳🇿 after they see that post!)

  9. Oh, I was going to edit my post but I'll put it up here.

When I come across someone who has not filled their holes I feel like someone is going to 'accuse me' of it so I have to fill THEIR holes which can slow me down if that is what it is about.  As far as I can tell the only good personal reason why someone would not want to fill their holes is so they can get on to the next target.  That is pretty selfish.

It is also one of the reasons I hunt like Steve.  I go in the middle of the night or at other times when people and prospectors are not around.

  10. I am the one to give grief to some of my fellow beach hunters.  I sometimes come upon them or they come upon me and they 'jump' my detecting pattern or grid.  That is my first 'beef' with them and I'll sometimes get over that one and have a bit of a chat.  I won't chat the guy who isn't filling his holes.  My blood begins to boil and by the time I catch up to them or they get to me I'm in fight mode.  I know I should be more calm and explain but I sometimes walk around them and yell 'fill your holes' whether it is day or night.  I ask if they would be hurt if they stepped in some of their own holes.  I know I would be.  There is a popular deep scoop now that leaves a crater and a jogger or old person with bad limbs or eyesight could fall and ruin the hobby for all of us.

I use to take the attitude that an open hole with dirt around it was easier to spot than a soft hole.  This was until one day many years ago an old lady took me to task on a great patch I was working.  She told me there were so many holes she couldn't walk across my diggings and she was right.  That changed me FOREVER.

Think about your kid or mother stepping in the hole you leave ... even prospecting.

  11. Chase,

Thanks for adding a lot to Steve's forums.  I think that Flakmagnet could lend us his tone experience here also.

It is topics and 'solutions' like this that help me to think about more optimal setups also.  I'm glad we have a place to discuss it.

Perhaps there are other places but I don't Facebook or go to other treasure sites where tweaking is the primary point of discussion.  I just happened to remember my beginnings with the 800 and how it took me a while to HEAR what the Equinox was saying.

  12. Randy has replied and said:

    Hello Mitchel

I have just found Gordons post on the Minelab Owners Forum and I have copied his settings below and I can see why people are getting confused.

Yes Gordon is using 50 Tones and he is correct in saying that you can set the lower tone pitch with the only one option in "Tones" which displays "TONE 1"  (ie) silver paper, thin silver and gold coins and all that it means is that the lowest tone threshold is starting at this low sounding conductive tone then as the machine detects non ferrous according to the conductive scale for example a large copper coin the responsive higher "Tone" is heard.

Notice Gordon does not mention anywhere in his post below that there is the ability to make additional "Tone Breaks" or make any selective "Tone Pitch".   All sounds produced is totally reliant on the conductivity of the metal object and that is where the LOW to HIGH Pitch Tones emanate from and is produced on the tone pitch scale 1 to 50.

    Good Hunting

    Randy

    Gordons Post from his thread.

Re: Making an Equinox sound like a CTX3030

You can change the tone pitch on all tone options (1, 2, 5, 50).
50 tones is done on Tone Break T1, and a low setting of 1 (T1 = 1) gives the lowest target tones (lower range of multi-tones). T1 = 11 moves the tones range to their highest settings... and of-course setting in between correspond to tone pitches in between..
  13. Fred has steered you in the right direction.  I've been to Holbrook at least 4 times.  The first time was in 2012 for the 100 year anniversary.   It is a LONG way from things and the meteorites are difficult to find.

The 'location' is easy and I had maps when I was there but the identification of the meteorite vs the other rocks is difficult.  The first time I went there I had taken with me a big shop magnet.  That didn't help so I didn't take it back.

Send some messages to those on the meteorite forums Fred showed you and you'll get an update.  I haven't been there in about 3 years and some of the land had been cleared, some was private and the rains had moved things around also.
