Looking for tips on what to carry in the field for nugget hunting. I have a metal detector, skid plate for the coil, an Apex pick with super magnet, a plastic scoop, a plastic flat sided cup, a small plastic bottle for nuggets. Which is better, a back pack or finders pouch? Thanks in advance for your thoughts and suggestions.

Does anyone know whether Miner John has been successful in rebuilding his manufacturing facility after it burned in the fire? I am entertaining the idea of buying one of his coils if and when they once again become available, and am just curious. I certainly wish him the best.

Jim: I want to be certain that I am on the same page with you. I should have stated my assumption that I would use four of the cells that could be charged to a total of 16.8 volts. Based on your comment, I assume that I could use this charger successfully if I charged four of the cells and acknowledging that I should NOT charge only three of the cells with this charger. Am I correct? Thanks for your reply.

I have a question on battery chargers for these modified battery packs. I recently purchased a new TDI SL and have been reading various posts about battery voltage, the benefits of increased voltage and modified battery packs. Recently I found a sale on the RNB Innovations TDI battery pack. The batteries in the pack appeared to be similar in size to AA batteries so I ordered the unit. And appearances can be deceiving and were deceiving. The batteries are a slightly larger than AA batteries. So I now have this unit that includes the 14.4 volt battery charger. Has anyone tried using the RNB 14.4 volt charger to charge the 18650 batteries, and if so what was the result? Success or failure? Just curious before I take the plunge. Thanks in advance for any insight.

As a beginner, I am trying to understand the details of the concept of nugget patch size. As I understand the concepts, a nugget field is defined as a general area that may contain gold. And a nugget patch is a small area within a nugget field that actually contains a group of gold nuggets. From what I have read so far, some patch hunters define a patch as any location that produces two or more nuggets within a distance of a few tens of yards. Is this a reasonable definition of a patch? This then implies that there is much barren space between the patches. I have several questions specifically on nugget patch size: 1) what is the range of sizes of actual nugget patches; 2) does the size vary depending on location (valley/gulley/gulch vs. mountain or hill); 3) does the patch size vary depending on geography (desert vs. a temperate area such as Sierra Nevada or Cascades); 4) is there a patch size relation to the age of the geology, that is, older rocks generally have larger patches? Any help in learning what to expect in the field would be appreciated.

Mike_Hillis: I will admit that I am not familiar with either Chris Gholson or Perry Massie. Did I miss something here? Care to share the titles?

Because I am new to the nugget hunting experience, to use an analogy, I have decided to start building my fishing rod so that I can learn to fish and then find a lake in which to fish and, hopefully eventually find a fishing hole. To this end I continue to read the various threads on this and other forums. On this forum I have found several threads discussing popular nugget hunting books and Steve Herschbach’s list of free books in pdf format. To provide a starting point in the learning process I have constructed a list of (gold) nugget hunting references, as shown below. I recognize that some of these books are out of print and difficult to source. My question is this: what other nugget hunting related books would you recommend that I try to read or review?

Valens: Thanks for the info. I was unaware that these were available. For many years I carried the cut and suck type kit and finally disposed of it.
