  1. It's been raining all day. Didn't mean to but have spent about eight hours online and at the local library. I really appreciate anyone's and everyone's ideas but this is a very rural area and didn't have a full time resident until the 1880's.

I have found out that a news paper was started here in 1905. The railroad came in and stopped a couple miles to the west in 1912. This caused most of the population to move. A clipping from another gost town in 1895 states that a race track was just completed in Meadows. All of two sentences. Then I found a book with two pictures of the crowd at the track but no good land marks or reference points. The old Ponderosa pines are all gone.

But you can see the stands to the right. And the nature of the racing, no surrey's and how temporary it was.

Back to tracking down old timers. I know about where but different land owners on each side of the road that may have changed locations. One land owner lives in South Africa...sigh...

    But I'm still trying.

  2. Thanks to everyone for ideas. I may have time later this week to check " the library" in town. Although talking to some of old timers may have better clues.

The town was picked up'd and moved four miles west when the train came in, they weren't willing to come all the way. The race track was probably used just before the turn of century. Then irrigation ditches we're dug and some of the roads were moved.

It's bugging me so I'll keep at it.

  3. Just some thoughts. Don't know where you dug this but a lot of piers going into the lake would have had old handmade spikes. I was on a build that had reclaimed lumber from Salt Lake piers that had some beautiful color due the minerals in the water. All had spike holes.

Could the lead be a seal for for a bottle or jar?

Is there a historical society in your city? It was through my city's historical society, that I was made aware of the original site of a very old trading post and fort.

A local historical society or museum, may also have a digital archive that can be searched by keyword. My local museum has a digital archive, and the pictures are often accompanied by the exact location.

Digital? What's digital? 😂 Town of about eight hundred. Logging and ranching. No museum but the old railroad depot has a few pictures. Most of the info I have is from the old guys that I bought a drink for at the bar.

I'm thinking maybe old newspapers.  A horse track would have got some coverage.  Possibly advertising too.  As I'm sure you know, horse racing was a big dang deal back in the day and got lots of attention.

Hadn't thought about newspapers. Probably have to look up Boise or Lewiston cause I doubt there was one here . I'm told that there was a circuit and that this was on it.

  6. I'm told by old timers that a horse race track was right next door to me. But the old timers aren't old enough to know exactly where. I've looked on Historical Aerials but in my area the earliest photo is 1939. By then they had plowed disked and put in irrigation ditches. No real difination of a track. I want to know where the crowd might have been standing.

I was contracted to dig a ditch in the area and dug through an an old trash dump for an old house that shows up. Any ideas for other resources? Records are scarce for this part of Idaho in nineteen hundred.

Yep, it's very unrealistic, the shows' primary purpose is going to be selling prospecting equipment to new comers that think they'll strike it rich.

They were using Minelab detectors, one guy the GPZ and Dave Turin had a brand spanking new Gold Monster, so white was its coil it near blinded me, that things never touched the soil and no doubt at the end of the episode they could put it back in the box and sell it as new.

Notice something missing? Dave doesn't even have anything to dig a hole, no digging equipment at all, just some gloves in his pocket so maybe he's going to dig by hand.

Like all of these shows they're for entertainment purposes, and very unrealistic.  They make it all sound so easy and if you spend a few bucks and get a detector you'll have fistfuls of gold in no time.

Nothing in the credits about thanks to Minelab or anything though, and Dave does wear a Garrett hat later in the episode, and the hat looks like it's been around for a while, so not handed to him for the show like the Gold Monster was 🙂

It was quite good to watch to see a bit of America, it seems strange pulling nuggets out of that grass paddock like that though, wish we could have nice flat grass paddocks like that here to detect 🙂

I grew up south of that area. It's all grazing land and private. Beautiful country if you can get permission.

  8. Zoleo is great. If you aren't using it actively you can keep the subscription open for like four dollars a month. I have sent messages out to the air service from the back country in Idaho and vise versa. Connect with other users. Much more affordable than a Spot device. Just took a trip to Nevada and wandered into no cell service. If you break down you can get a message out. I've always been self reliant but it gives family members peace of mind.KIMG0689.thumb.JPG.cc4aeabda5b24b2acdaace8cd568d800.JPG

A lot of people favour one brand over another, but realistically the 15" will likely be slightly deeper being the bigger coil, the 14" will be slightly more sensitive being the smaller coil.    Be happy with your 14" Elite, there won't be all that much of a difference.

A Nugget Finder 15" owner will tell you it's better, a Coiltek 14" Elite owner will tell you it's better. 🙂  I doubt many if any have both seeing they're so similar.  The Nugget Finder is a bit lighter though.

Kinda what I thought.  Ford vs Dodge vs Chevy debate.

At least now I have an aftermarket 14" mono, a Sadie and a nf 14x7 advantage. I've spent a lot time searching but but got some deals or at least fair to upgrade my game. Really hopping things work out so I can give them a try in the next month or so. Weather, time, money, life....

I have a few spots to try out that I've been reaching so I have high hopes.

I really am hoping that the 5000 & E1500 cross over on their strengths and weaknesses so the need for a more expensive small gold detector will be not needed. It is really great the coils our interchangeable.

Someone on the forum once said coils our what sell detectors.

I'm finding that out. ( Kinda behind the curve I guess). It's like the Chevy 350 engine and the choice of a 4/11 transmission for the torque or something with more highway speed like a 375.

  11. So I just received a slightly used elite in the mail today. Won't be able to try it out for a week or three. I have seen posts and had the 15" nf recommended. The one I got was a price I could afford. It's going on a gpx 4500. What are the comparisons? I've tried several different searches here but must not be wording it right.
