  1. So I'm in Idaho and dont see Algoforce making any inroads here for a at least a few months. What can I do to upgrade my gpx 4500 ? Don't have any aftermarket coils but I'm working on it. Are any upgrades going to be worth it? I have have learned a lot on this forum and thank everyone for posting their knowledge. I don't always have the time to geek out on the subtleties that might give me an edge. Yes I have found gold and do my research. I guess I'm asking if the aftermarket coils are worth it?

  2. As a business owner and consumer I will say this; never be a push over. You will be be taken advantage of. But sometimes you need to pick your battles. And if I go the extra mile on something small for a customer it will pay dividends through word of mouth. By the same account I will not not business with someone/ company who does not provide good customer service. Not worth it.

  3. Thought I would update this post. Anyone else have newer stuff/ideas?

Today I took some reloading equipment and gun related stuff to a gun store in Boise I like to thin out some of what I inherited. In a partial trade I picked up two cases. Almost identical, one is a tactical rifle and gear case, the other is a mobile gear crate. The difference being one has a gun tray, the other a deep gear tray. They have small wheels on one end (but no coffee cup holder 😥). The inside dementsions are 39.5"L x 11"W x 9.5"H. Not super padded but I can adjust that accordingly. I can fit two Nox 800's and coils, 6" 11" and 15" plus gear. It does take some spatial aptitude. Or I can fit in a gpx 4500 with coils (15x10 shown.  Has holes for locks if desired.

Not a pelican case but but a nice option too protect the detector and gear. And it's made USA.

I can do all that just hiking and camping. Better probably since I would not be so focused on my detector and the ground. If it was just for the fun and experience you can go detect for copper nuggets. Why don’t people do that? Because no matter what there is a hope, a dream of finding the big one. The other things are icing on the cake - but they are not the cake. I’m betting that if I could give people 100% assurance they had zero chance of finding anything of value, quite a few people here would find other ways to go see a sunset.

I could go sit on a creek bank with a pan and shovel. It would be ok. Different strokes for different folks. I can zone out and not think of anything else. I find it relaxing. I love wandering around waving a stick over the dirt listening to the tones from the detector, tones of hope. But I have found just enough gold to keep me going, knowing it's possible. I agree Steve, if the was a 100 percent assurance that I wouldn't find anything I would look for something else to do. Same with deer hunting. If you assured me that I would never get one...

With the coming of the AlgoForce in a price that's reachable and the possibility of gold I know that the dream has a tangible point and I will pursue it.

  5. Huh. I was hoping some one with some knowledge would chime in. That or some conspiracy theories 🤪. So if I understand it right (I looked up hooper crystals) the gold mineral formed first? And then then the shale around it? I had thought the gold solution was following the fractures/ grooves in the shale. Kind of changes how a guy might look deeper into how or look/ understand where to look for gold.

    Thanks for the comments.

  6. I downloaded a rock I'd app and was testing it against known rock samples (about 75 percent accurate) and found some of the shale rocks we had picked up at Rye Patch last year. They have what I think is calcite veins and show on one side where it has dissolved leaving shallow grooves for the gold solutions to flow through. One of them has the distinct Chevron pattern. I'm not a geologist so am I right or close? Cool rock in any case. And I could say my wife did find a Chevron at Rye Patch...just not the gold variety..KIMG0656.thumb.JPG.1be656fe930c5fb6eb0a1a1acd03a095.JPGKIMG0657.thumb.JPG.8f4a4763b0c9d539b7d8b8ea805dd166.JPGKIMG0659.thumb.JPG.6ecc0f00f87bcdff4426e72f1a9a7a71.JPGKIMG0658.thumb.JPG.aa15eb171ae29fa90825dc031d095f4e.JPG

  7. KIMG0646.thumb.JPG.9649d204cc16a9afe521a95932cd9d00.JPGLife happened and I haven't been able to get out detecting for quite a while. But managed an overnight trip down to Riggins and got out of the snow for two days. It's been a very warm and dry winter so far and the temps on the river were in fifties. Just bought a new/used travel trailer and we wanted to give it a test run before taking a longer trip. And throwing in some time detecting would be great!

Im not sure which topic to post this kind of trip under. It's a very general kind of hunt. Coins, jewelry, junk, fishing gear and gold in the river is all possible. We were happy just swinging an electric stick over the dirt and rocks. The scenery and geology here is amazing!

A few buckets of trash not included in the pics. Unfortunately inherent in this area are camp fires and a lot of beer drinking. That equals the redneck aluminum nuggets that ID from 5 to 35.

Did find a cheap silver ring but no gold yet.

  8. I don't how many times I have been bit. A couple of years ago I was working in an area that has a couple quadrillion ticks in the spring. After work I hiked up the hill to an old river bench that had mining activity in the past. Didn't find any gold but came home with one of the five or so diseases ticks can carry. Not Limes or Rocky Mountain. They are all treated with the same antibiotic. I was down for a week.

My coworker and I brought out all kinds of repellants to experiment with. Hiked up towards the old claim and collected ticks. We put circles of repellant on the table and a tick in each circle . None of the ticks would cross to get out. But the tick inside the circle of Permetherin crawled to the inside edge... And then died! This stuff is sprayed on your clothes and let dry and is good for many washings.

  9. That's a cool find. I just found a button too. It's the fourth overall button to come out of my yard. Mountaineer and it matches one of the other. I think it's from the seventies like yours. Except maybe the 1970's. The others maybe from the forties. My wife found the woman's button. Love to be able hunt around a colonial. Idaho just doesn't have metal buttons from the 1770's.

  10. Uugghh! Ok we went to Nevada to do some nugget shooting. We ignored some iffy targets because pumping the coil over them gave a negative 9. This was in prospecting modes. Great for pin pointing but...when we returned home l played with a piece of gold I had found previously from the same area. In prospecting mode when pumping the coil over it gave a... negative 9! Sweeping gave a 1. So good for pin pointing but in prospector when pumping the coil ignore the number. Must be part of that learning your machine thing. Now I know.
