Something to be said for CooB scoops too but they're also from Ukraine. They have a wide selection of them, and they sell on Amazon. I'd like to get their Titanium scoop someday, right now I have the Shark V10 since it's the largest. 2mm stainless steel, I've had mine 2 years now and no rust or deformation but I don't hunt the beach as much as others. When I get home I rinse it with water and spray some WD-40 on it, and wipe it down. I do this with all my shovels!

I made my own handle for mine out of PVC and a bamboo insert. However, SteveG makes great carbon fiber handles for them. If I ever break the one I made 🙄 I'll get one.

    Here's the titanium scoop:

Mine is almost 6' long. It's nice for deeper water as it helps you keep your balance when not scooping, or in moving water.

Regardless of what configuration and type you buy, get a Raptor handle for it and mount it as shown angled down, it points toward the digging side of the scoop which is not only useful for leverage but also tells you which direction the scoop is in deep water, or even shallow when you stir up the bottom.

A fairly accurate method for scooping in water is to pinpoint the target, hold the detector on the bottom and find the edge of the coil with the scoop point. Lift the detector and press the scoop down at a fairly extreme angle. Gets the target much faster.

That's awesome thanks so much for all of the information as I am very new to detecting. I really appreciate the help and I'll be looking into all of this.

  2. For metal detecting on the beach, what is a very good beach scoop with a long handle that will not rust and is very high quality? It doesn't have to be extremely high quality I just don't want it to rust or break for a very long time. I bought one for $130 and the metal handle folded and the hardware was eaten up by rust, so I'm just trying to do some research before ordering one this time. Thanks in advance for your help! 🙂

Gold ring often = pull tabs on central Florida beaches where I hunt. I hit 12 possible gold “13” signals in a row. The fifteenth I almost passed up, being tired. Dug it anyway and it was an approx 200+ year old carved design 14kt ring.

Note: this is at my beach, other areas and things will vary.Your soil and EMI may make the vdi number diff. Figure your number for pull tabs. I have found any nonferrous metal formed into a ring and the NOX screams ring; pull tab, rivet, esp stainless steel washers or fishing gear.

take a nickel, dime, penny and pull tab with you each trip to test. Try it in wet and dry sand. Flat and on edge (sweep direction of an on-edge coin varies with sweep direction).

turn your phone off or at least on airplane in a back pocket as far from coil as possible.

move slow, overlap swings. If you find something you like, make tight spirals around it. You may find another or several similar density near. The ocean sorts into ‘lines’ and circular ‘coin holes’. Find a few older coins along the surf, look back once in a while and see if your filled holes kind of ‘line up’.

keep doing what you are doing. We all did.

it will begin to get very familiar.

    all the best.

Thanks very much, very good tips. I appreciate it. I will continue to put the time in that's for sure! Very great advice and thanks my friend.

You answered you own question. 👍 I have a friend who also has an 800 (I have a 600) who says "if you're not digging foil you're not finding gold". He has been doing this for many more years than me. This applies to small gold, thin gold, chains and the like. It isn't just pull tabs.🙄

With experience (repetition, perseverance) you may be able to distinguish certain items from the good stuff over time, but even the best get fooled. I'm pretty sure the hardcore people dig it all most of the time.

There are detectors that give you some more visual distinction, but they're a lot more expensive.

I'm relatively new to detecting, a little over 2 years. I only go to the beaches a few times a year, and I didn't find any gold rings for the first year. I have also found as much gold in fields and farms as I found on the beach!

Keep at it, enjoy your time out, lower your expectations and learn to laugh when you get fooled, or skunked! 🤣 🍀

Thanks for the info 🙂 I'll keep at it! I definitely cleaned the beach of trash today. Haha

    Welcome to the forum. 🙂

Pull tabs and bottle caps are a certainty on the beach. So are tent stakes and foil. It depends upon what part of the beach you are searching, what program you are using, many things!

Unfortunately if the beach has been hit hard by more (and many) experienced detectorists, you will find a higher concentration of the above as they may have "cherry picked" the stuff you are looking for. Another problem may be the season and the massive cold snap we just had, that lessens the amount of "depositors" on the beach 😀

I think we will need a bit more information about what program and coil you are using before any specific help can be offered. 🙂 There is no magic that will get you instantly what you want, time, repetition and persistence are the best teachers.

Thanks for the welcome 🙂 I am running the out of the box setup for the minelabs equinox 800. (Double D coil I think? If that is standard out of the box). I am running 3.08 I think program (if that is wrong, its the most updated software).

I found 2 fishing sinkers today and it seems to pick them up strong (maybe the metal on top of the sinker?), does that mean I should up my FE setting? Or F2? I am just running the out of the box setup for the minelabs equinox 800.

Just a question if you dont mind. Will I eventually be able to hear the difference between can tops (pull tabs), and something of value? Like gold? Or is the overlap so close that it is impossible to tell even with experience? I will keep reading and heading out :D

    Welcome aboard.

Look at all the junk other beach hunters are posting .

You'll have to dig it all to have the best odds of finding something "good".  Gold can ID just about anywhere..

Are you finding many fishing sinkers ?

Check these out while you wait for more responses.

Digging it ALL, is your only way to learn!!

You will set your own parameters.

Thanks for the info! I will keep digging for sure 🙂

  9. Hi there,

I am new to detecting on the beach. The sand is very fine I'm in the Florida panhandle. I get a lot of pull tabs and a bottle tops. I think that I'm getting used to the sound but I don't want to miss out on something good.

Can you share any tips on dealing with this? I hear some people say to dig everything on the beach, is it true? Should I be doing something to avoid pull tabs?

    Thanks for your time.
