  1. Found this cool magnet while looking for other stuff. Thought I would throw it out there. Cheesy plunge magnets for black sand and what not always drove me nuts. But this is well built and for its size has impressive power 60lb pull and 17lb shear. Turn the switch to release the magnetic pull. Very cool.

  2. High Chris, I did some prospecting years ago on some of those claims. I can tell you they are poor at best.

The Dameree claim is not good to dredge. The permit is free but the state requires a 50.00 commercial use fee there.

As far as the Shirley  E. I never figured out why that is a claim. Very poor.

The best bet is the Northlander # 2 on Colorado Creek. You should get descent gold from that one. Also the Tenderfoot camp ground is across the Seward Highway behind Summit Lake Lodge. I really like this campground and it usually has available space. Plus the state remodeled it two years ago.And Summit Lodge has good food and a excellent ice cream shop. I always stop for the ice cream. Don't pass the ice cream. Did I mention the ice cream. Moose Tracks is my favorite.

You should also look into the public prospecting areas. http://www.detectorprospector.com/gold-prospecting-public-sites/sites/public-mining-site-list.htm

You should get a copy of this book Rockhounding Alaska

It has info on all the state prospecting sites as well as other minerals and fossils that will be in the area you are traveling.

Oh by the way the water in Alaska is a wee bit nippy. Might want a dry suit.

  3. Found this gold test kit for smart phone application. Might be a good option to reduce all the extra gear needed to carry.

  4. I agree, the dredge is overly complex. Most areas have been worked by less efficient systems over the last 100 plus years and a lot of the larger pieces are gone I see the future of all prospecting equipment focusing the technology towards productively recover of small gold in a efficient manner.

I like the fact Keene is putting effort in to better recovery. If they continue down this road they may get to a simple design that really puts more gold value in the pan at the end of the day.

The real problem with fine gold recovery for the small/recreational miner is bragging rites. A half ounce nugget always looks better than one ounce of 200 mesh gold.

  5. I think I just found a new market for my dookie launcher. Now not only is it good to settle road rage but also drone rage.

Can you just see the argument in court. " Your honor, my neighbor just sh*! on me. LOL...

  6. You will need a dredge permit from Alaska Department of Fish & Game. Here is the application for Kenai area.http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/static/license/uselicense/pdfs/kenai_mining_sixmile.pdf

If you need permits for other areas. http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=uselicense.gpdredge

The new permits are nice they give info on the streams in the areas as far as dredging times and GPS info also the maps will help determine the Anadromous fish areas.

Best of all they are FREE. So don't go with out one.

Also when you apply for this permit they will give you a permit for the other agency's you need.

Kuddos to Alaska for stream lining the process.

Let me know if you have any specific questions.

  8. Hi Monte, I did find a 5'' dd gold bug coil for the F19. I only have had time to put it on once to check the stock coil. The only reason I am considering the small NEL is it is epoxy filled and the issue with the stock coil seems to be moisture getting in and causing falsing. That and the 3x6 shape may be really good for working bedrock crevices.

Maybe I should work with the 5 inch coil before I acquire one more thing to haul around.

Thanks for the info it is a help.

  9. Excellent post Monte!

Although I would be happy with any silver looking in older parks and what not make a lot of sense for the old rare coins/relics. I have been doing some research for old places to hunt and have a place in mind for this coming summer. http://www.alsap.org/ArcticValley/ArcticValley.htm It is the old military ski area and lodge at Artic Valley.

Also found this site on local parks that I found helpful. Gives a lot of history and park improvement dates. http://anchorageparkfoundation.org/directory/.

Interesting both you and Steve recommend the small coil. I was actually looking for coil info and what is compatible with the F19.

I have been looking at the NEL Snake coil 3x6 dd. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Steve, Thanks for the history on Spenard Park and the Park Strip lived here all my life and just did not relies they are that old. Guess I need to pay more attention to my surroundings. I suppose that is what winter time is for.

  10. Good to know silver exists in Anchorage. Starting to wonder.

I am sure you are spot on with the jewelry being the bigger ticket. I have been looking at the lost and found on Craigslist - amazing the amount of rings lost weekly.

Seems a lot of it is lost at shopping areas. And being we pile the snow up I have been taking notes and plan to run them in the spring. Might be interesting.

I was adding to the Archives today. The main forum is running back over 40 pages at the moment so I have about 20 more pages of posts to categorize and move.

Some of the equipment pages, like the F19 especially, need beefing up. I put them out right when a new machine shows up sometimes, and in the case of the F19 did not get back to it later to flesh out the details that are now available. I try to get in tidbits and details you can't find anywhere else or at least not all in one place. If all you want is a product page there are a zillion of those out there.

    40 pages back, WOW.
