I am obviously prospecting wrong. I need a good horse to lose

Dont forget our rivers full of fishing weights and sinkers

All this says is a 4ft post with claim papers. Most I know are compliant with this. Note this is lode. For placer it would be a discovery marker

Switch to fine gold or enhance and see if it ground balances out. Of course the only 100% method is to dig it out, but this should give you a good idea

I dont believe the statements that they will trace the gold back to its source is possible with any degree of accuracy. Even in a single vein system the gold is so highly variable that pinpointing source has low statistical precision. Added to this different efficiency of small scale smelting and refining processes and leaching of placer in the environment and you will be able to tell it is, well, gold.

Looks like an ibutton, which can be data logging temperature sensors or electronic tags .

If there is any doubt, it is not gold

I’m not trying to argue with you, and if you want to believe that everyone that buys a nugget detector is finding lots of gold, that’s fine by me. It’s certainly what the manufacturers want everyone to believe. Just buy one, run right out, you’ll pay for it in no time, be making money fast. Yup, that’s the ticket!
My point is not that. My point is that, much like national election polls, you cannot represent the whole US when you have sections that are systematically non reporting.
I shall sign off here, however.

Actually it’s pretty easy to generalize if you are in retail and deal with thousands of customers.
The people I know dont reveal to dealers what they are finding, especially because they have more infomation about them. Admittedly a small number, but that is my experience.
Those finding little tend to lie they are finding more. Those finding more tend to lie they are finding little

The US is a big place with many areas of gold mineralization, and many people never post their finds for obvious reasons. I think it is very hard to generalize based on Rye Patch and a couple of other areas. Those doing very well keep it very quiet and dont advertise where there is good gold to be found.

Excellent post. very useful. Thanks

I agree that sensitive extra is great, and sharp is magic for running over your ground for the deeper fainter signals, however, I also find a use for fine gold when patch hunting as it is less sensitive to hot rocks and mineralization and thus more efficient at ground coverage when looking for that indicator nugget

They are the ones that forgot their pick in the 6000 commercials

A test where all 3 detectors get all the targets, except perhaps one, just leaves you with the different sounds they make. I would have liked to see targets half the weight at those depths

I was thinking maybe velcro on unit and on detecting shirt to make sure doesnt fall off???....Or maybe they are normally secure.
Probably important when you are running away from the pigs or dogs

If you don't have issues with your 12 by 15 mono, and it runs fine, then I would recommend the 15" evolution

Of course the state minerologist was wrong about there being no gold around san francisco, as there is gold in the sands at ocean beach, and others, worked during the depression.
There are also gold mines on Mount Diablo

When using my 5000 with the 35, it will make the 5000 go crazy even when placing it several feet away. I have to turn off the 35 to settle the detector.
This is frequency dependent. If you select a different frequency for the 5000 you wont hear it. Easiest way is turn the pinpointer on then hit the frequency select button

Thanks for the response. That is weird. I must have had a different unit 7 years ago. Mine has none of the issues you mention, and I use it to recover the vast majority of nuggets (because I only want to dig just as much as I have to). Only issues I have are forgetting to put a new battery in when it is low which causes it to act up (my bad), changing frequency on the detector to avoid EMI and finding it conflicts (my bad), and if I hit the tip hard on a rock (you guessed it). otherwise works in most orientations.

I have been using the minelab pinpointer for 7+ years with the gpx and it suited my purpose fine and I didnt think much about it, but your comments made me wonder. what makes you say it is garbage, or what do the others do better?

And a bit more focus on EMI shielding. Using the aftermarket shielding for the box combined with moving to a lithium battery makes a huge difference
