"The lower shaft fills up with water"

I've always said that going to college for 10 years made me loose a lot of my common sense...but I still find it hard to believe that the engineers at Minelab built a waterproof detector and forgot to make the lower shaft drain properly  LMAO   guess I'll be drilling a hole too!

    strick

My thought on it is they never had a real water Hunter testing the machine for them in the water!

Hey Minelab I'll volunteer to test your machines in salt water! I live on a sailboat and I'm surrounded by salt water 24/7! Lol

Here is my hunt from this A.M. 5 rings Tung. Titanium, Alum. Brass and 14.7g of Silver. Notice all of the Micro targets.

Nice morning hunt! yeah I had a bunch of that micro stuff too, some of it I couldn't find kept slipping through the scoop.

How is your Beach is it clean not so much trash and junk?

I wrapped my Infinium mono coil in Gorilla tape.  I got a coil cover, but it was like trying to swing a boat oar through the water.  I sprayed my DFX coils with bedliner stuff for trucks.  Worked like a charm.

I like the idea of the bed liner! did the stuff layout flat? Or maybe I should say smooth....

  4. I also wanted to add this about Beach hunting, I've had detectors that picked up more than one target in my scoop at a time once in a great while, on the other hand my 8-hour beach hunt I bet it happened 15-20 times there'd be Nails with a coin or screws with a square pull tab.... so when looking in your scoop and you see a target don't be surprised if there's more in the scoop!

Also I think the very quick separation this machine has, brings any place you walk into alive! I can't wait to get on a beach that doesn't have all the junk that the beach I'm working on has! It's like metal detecting in a dump!

Wish I was near the Treasure Coast right now! I'd love to take this machine down there and crank her up! I think I'd actually have a chance of finding something there with this machine!

  5. March 1st hunt my second,  approximately 8 hours in the water and yes I came out looking like a prune.....

Any suggestions I make in this post are for saltwater beach hunting!

As you can see in the photo I found a ton of aluminum, and those little tabs off the pull rings, ring out Target ID 9 10 + 11 some of those were a good two solid scoops down in the sand! Also found a junk ring, junk earring and I don't count the clad or pennies! They're just in the photo so you can see what I scooped up!

I changed the tones, moved up the gold and lower ID numbers to a higher pitch that helped out tremendously as far as letting me know where something was quickly...

I'm thinking next time I'll go to two tone and try that....

Drilled a hole in the lower shaft approximately an inch and a half from the bottom of the shaft now when you walk up out of the water onto the beach, it just gushes out!

    This machine is extremely powerful!

I would never tell anyone to turn their sensitivity down on any machine except for this one, for junk filled beaches! And when I'm talkin junk filled beaches I could sit in a 10 x 10 foot spot and spend all day picking out every little target! I guess I'm just looking for gold and little gold chains are okay but the amount of junk on this beach I would have to dig to find one would be unbelievable!

I'm still learning this machine and I have a long ways to go!

I'm taking today off to get some stuff done and rest, tomorrow I'm going to the sandbar where everybody hangs out with their boats and parties in the water...

Great report. I'm hitting the beach tomorrow but I'm just going to hit the wet sand and then the dry. Would you recommend taking the coil cover off for beach hunting only?

I think you'll be fine on the dry and damp beach it's when you go in the water that the sand seems to work its way in underneath the coil cover... I'm sure they're expensive so this will be the first time I will use a coil cover.... I'm looking for some black silicone caulking to seal the coil cover

I do week long hunts 2x a year and wonder if you feel the shaft connections will be fine or lock up?  We have had some detectors in times past the shafts get fine sand in them and freeze up.

The shaft is already starting to feel a little gritty I rinse heavily with fresh water after every hunt... being that the lower shaft is some type of plastic fiber, I'm not sure if it will lock up only time will tell! I drilled a hole the same size as the other holes about an inch and a half from the base of the rod and now when I walk up on the beach after being in the water it's no longer heavy, the water just gushes out!

Nice gold.  Confirmed Beach 2 is the way to go in the water just like the manual says (good!) and boy those are some nasty Quarters. lol.

Thanks for the water report and no one had previously pointed out the water retention issues.

Does your beach have black sand?  The Equinox will sense it and reduce power in Beach mode according to the Manual.

No black sand that I'm aware of... it never reduced power.....

Some of the coins I pulled off this Beach were just wafer-thin!

  9. Okay got out today for 3 hours... using beach 1, on the beach I was hunting on you could not go into the water even with lower sensitivity without falsing occurring... Beach 2 could run all the way up to 24 on the sensitivity without falsing in the water and the surf...

I got a Gold the first time out very small kids ring 14k! I used stock settings the only thing I changed was the sensitivity, I'm old school like to start out with stock settings other than tones and sensitivity so that when I'm making the adjustments I get a Feeling for what's going on...

This machine is super hot I had to dial back on the Sensitivity I was digging too many small non-ferrous junk targets..... (the beach I'm working is full of junk)

    The bad:

There's definitely something messed up in the programming for the pinpoint!

Hey Minelab I want a pinpointer I can turn on and it works the second I hit the button I don't want to wait for it!

Quite a few occasions I press the pin pointer you could go over the Target and hear it like it was in the distance never gave me the Horseshoe to show where the center of the target was and never became loud so I could hear it! Sometimes I'd have to move back to the side of the hole hit the button again hit it again and then it would work.....

After the frustration with the pinpointer I stopped using it!

The lower shaft fills up with water and the coil cover fills up with water and sand so when you come out of the water onto the land The Equinox weighs more than a CTX now! And Incredibly nose-heavy at this point!

Easy enough fix though drill a hole in the lower shaft so the water can drain out... I'm going to use some type of caulking for the coil cover to seal it to the coil... I usually don't use coil covers just for this reason!

No matter how tight I tighten the cam locks you can still twist the shafts fairly easily

But all in all this is the machine I've been waiting for most of my life!

As Steve pointed out, if another company one up'd minelabs technology, say a company that consistently listens to their customers,  regularly communicates with them, and has excellent customer service, many would jump ship.

There may be one such company with the ability that pull it off.

I don't think they'd even have to one-up them if they made it equal to the equinox lots of people would have jump ship!

Also if somebody came up with waterproof headphones right now and other size coils they'd be killing it

  11. I feel for you guys that are getting the back ordered notices!

After reading another thread good possibility that the dealers finally stood up on their hind legs and said something about it and got them to listen cuz there's nothing worse than waiting 5 months plus and seeing people get them that never even stood in line!

I still haven't cancelled my order with the dealer but I was like 39 or 40 something
