If you don't have a comfortable camp out detecting, it can make your entire detecting trip less successful. At least up in Montana. Just ask Oneguy. A good camp is a must.

I finally got out this past weekend for a gold hunt. The weather has really been messing with me, as far as being able to get up to where I hunt. I finally got to use my new 15" Evo and I have to say, I really like it. I was only detecting for 5 minutes when I got this nice sounding target, that had a double worble, and I knew it was a nugget. Weather was great Saturday, but Sunday morning it was raining with high winds. Then it started snowing, so I got the heck off of the mountain. I was told by a friend who lives down in the area to be careful because a 800-850 lb grizzly in the upper gulch where I camp and hunt has been very active trying to find food after winter. Luckily I have good camp prep habits with all food and trash put in cab of truck in ziplock bags. I only found the one nugget in the trip cut short, but I had a great time being back on the mountain.

I have started a thing on my Instagram page called Gold Detecting Food For Thought. Got people following it worldwide. I hope some of you are able to get out and find some gold. Luckily, Montana, isn't cracking down on people like in other states and Australia. Our governor is encouraging people to get out, camp and recreate. Just don't congregate. The weather has been keeping me from getting out. I will be getting out next weekend for the first hunt of this year. I can't hardly wait. It's driving me crazy. So yah, if you have finished reading it, let me know on here. I hope everyone is safe and well. I'm sad to hear about Fred Mason.

I also would guess that it is manganese. There is an area near Basin, MT that has nuggets that are 1/4- over an ounce that are completely covered with manganese. A guy a friend new found a large nugget panning in this area and picked it out of the pan, looked at it and tossed it back into the creek. When it was in mid air, he realized it was a nugget covered completely with manganese. He never found that nugget again but found some other similar sized nuggets that were completely black with manganese.

All remaining gold Shows are postponed for the next 8 weeks. Official from GPAA.

I finally got ahold of someone there and you are right Jim just the Sacramento and Vancouver shows. The rest are still going as planned.

I'm talking about the GPAA Gold and Treasure Show,  Butte and the other remaining shows out of the 11 scheduled.

Does anyone know if the remaining gold Shows are being postponed due to this coronavirus stuff? I heard from Ray Mills that one of the shows was going to be postponed. I can't get ahold of anyone at the GPAA. Especially Kevin Highland.

No it's not cheap if you keep it going month after month. The guy told me I was able to cancel any time and start back up any time. So I used it for a month to get land ownership roads and bearing for hiking in and then took screen shots with my phone. Then when the month is up I just cancel.

Oneuy, you clearly have misread what I was getting at. All I was was implying was I was trying to get you out of the one district and get you to explore other good districts. Thats all. Maybe with your new camper you will do more  exploring and research.

I agree with Gerry in regaurds to Montana being very very hot. The best areas I hunt are impossible with a vlf, but the monster is in fact capable if you reground balance often when it gets too noisy. Some areas you can't even move your coil an inch in any direction. This isn't just for a few feet or yards but 1-5 miles. You can see the black sands on the surface and if you dig down 5 inches, 10 inches, 1.5 feet, 3 feet, it is the same thing. Not tell tale signs of black sand but the dominant regolith is black sands and  granodiorite.

Jin, your comment of detecting and a bear comes up behind you actually happened to me last year. I was detecting on a creek that dried up and I kept hearing something over behind me to my right side and 3 times I pulled the headphones off and looked back to see what it was. Never saw or heard anything, went back to detecting and I heard it again. Nothing across the creek but something moving on my side of the creek caught my eye. It was a large black bear coming towards me about 75-95 feet roughly away from me. I thought oh crap, all I have with me is my pick and rock hammer for defence. I decided to just stay put and see what happens. The bear looked over in my direction, sniffed the air and turned and went away. I'd be way more scared of snakes. I walked into a snake den in fall and one rattleing next to my left foot and almost stepped on 6-7 baby rattlesnakes. This scared the living crap right out of me. I couldn't stop shaking. Snakes bother me more.

Its a concrete rake, and yes it is good for that. Thats why I encluded it inmy tools for detecting.

The torch is for Hydro-shocking quartz gold specimens or to get nuggets out of Prichard mud stone, that are completely trapped inside. It usually stays back at camp.

I use a rock hammer and chisels all the time when I detect the bedrock on Libby Creek in Montana. There is lots of bedrock and no detector pick is going to get through it. Some nuggets I find in this bedrock have to be retrieved with a hammer and chisel. Some even take 45 minutes to an hour to break enough rock away to get the nugget out. These items always will be in my pack when I am detecting around bedrock. It is frustrating to have to walk away from a target you are certain is a nugget.

Did the thick patena layer cause the signal to be some what weak or iffy? Some of the gold at a region I hunt has a calcium or hard clay build up that is cream to orangish  cream color and often causes the gold to be hard to get a signal on. It kind of masks it.
