A detector that you have to "warm up" for 15 to 20 minutes??

 

I was thinking the same thing. But then I thought It takes me 40 min to warm up so I should be good to go.  Never the less here is the first video of someone actually using the GPZ 7000.

Steve if you could comment on how the 7000 feels as compared to the CTX. I realize that it is going to be more front heavy. But is it as front heavy as say  the CTX with the large 17" DD coil?

Largo (Gary)- I have two 2300"s one runs smooth as silk all the time. The other has a more erratic threshold. I've tried frequency scans multiple times but it does not really help at all. The one with the erratic threshold was the one making the screeching sound occasionally.  What you are talking about is possible. I'm gonna head up to the foot hills soon and try it again. If it does the cat with a tail caught in the door noise again I'm sending it in to have it checked out. It was happening so much that I was ready to put it away. Monday it was not windy. This machine has also falsed on wet green plants before. BTW I met you last fall at Gerry's training session. You sat next to me during his talk. I was the good looking guy with the gray hair...

The wife and I headed to  N. Nevada this past weekend. It was our first Nevada trip together and my second to the area.  Got there late in the afternoon and neither of us could wait to start detecting.  I turned on the 2300 and within 5 min found my first nugget about 6 inches deep. I don't know why but I seem to have my best luck within minutes of turning on any metal detector. 15 min later I found another.  Another hour and the sun was starting to set so we got in the camper and had dinner....and a couple vodka drinks. One thing I love about this new hobby is there is no legal shooting time nor is there a bag and possession limit. So I told Lisa I'm going out to do a little night time detecting. I found three more.  I get back in the trailer and have another vodka drink.... I'm thinking I'm on a roll so I comment to Lisa that I'd like to end up with at least 20 nuggets for this trip. I should know better then to say something like that. The Kiss of death. All day Saturday not one nugget. I swang the 2300 till my arm almost was ready to fall off. Sunday morning we had 3 hours to detect before we had to leave. I managed 2 more with a lot of effort.

It was windy on Saturday and my machine was acting up. There were times when I would get this big spike in volume and the 2300 would make a loud screeching sound. I was running sensitivity on 4 and threshold on 3. Very frustrating. Might send it in to get checked out.

Whats up with that coil Steve? I hope you got a good deal on it! Just kidding of course. Thanks for your ever honest opinion on this new machine. Its adoption of the ctx housing makes me want to buy one immediately. The retail price of the machine makes me want to buy one never. It's only Money as they say.....

Any tips on ground balancing and suggested coil size???

I have not used it much. I bought it for her. I have the sdc 2300  and I wont let that thing leave my hands LOL One of the other members would be better off answering that.

Still trying to decide if I want to be an Innovator or not......Thanks for posting Steve

Nice work! I started not long ago as well. It's very addicting! I bought a Gold Bug 2 for my wife but she keeps digging hot rocks with it. I've told her over and over to listen for the ZIP.... ZIP but it goes in one ear and out the other.  She never listens to what I tell her..... is this normal?

My feelings exactly. I'm new to the game but it did not take me long to realize this is one of the best forum's for the detector enthusiast. Not only is it "Fair and Balanced" but Steve takes the time to put up new and interesting topics on a daily basis. I'm very much looking forward to what the pro's have to say about the new Minelab when the gag order has been lifted.

On a lighter note it's all about is finding stuff. Got out Sunday evening for about an hour and a half. Hunting in a wind storm with the CTX 3030. All early 1900's.... the ring is brass and silver I think. The piece of quartz is a friend of mine's He likes to hand inspect old tailing piles bit by bit and does not use a detector.

I hate secrets.... feeding us little bits here and there. And that picture above.... I must have seen it 50 times already...it has not changed. Minelab must have consulted with Accenture's marketing department at some point. But it It can backfire  also.

At any rate I just may say the heck with it and buy a used gpx 5000 as I'm starting to get turned off to all this pre-super detector hype. 

And some are pre ordering machines not even knowing what the price is?  or maybe they know what the price is not?

Gold fever is making me want to drive long distances now a days.  I have bought used since 1987. Mostly diesel trucks with under 50K miles on them. And I have not been disappointed.  I usually retire my work trucks into pleasure trucks. Recently I was looking for another truck as my pleasure truck (a retired work truck) had over 300K miles.  Used trucks (2 years old) in the class that I was looking for ran in the mid to high 40K range. And most of them were at dealers out state. I could buy new close to home for 52K and get exactly what I wanted so that's what I did. Back in the 80"s you could get a diesel 4x4 truck in the high 20's...seems its about double now.  Bottom line with trucks is similar to detectors.....if you want to play you have to pay.

I'm wondering how much that coil weighs. I can pretty much swing my CTX all day long with the stock coil 11" inch coil. With the 6" coil it's like swinging a feather. Put the 17" coil on it and that's a different story...it changes the balance making it too nose heavy and not fun any more!  I'm assuming that Minelab has it balanced  perfectly with that 14 inch coil? I guess these are the things that we will find out when the duct tape is pulled from the mouths of the testers.

No, Lightning EMI cannot fry your detector. If you and your detector are actually struck by the lightening itself, yes, that certainly can fry your detector.

So I have had two very experienced older prospectors tell me that they don't like the 2300 because the threshold warbles. In other words it is not stable. It does not really matter which setting you use it still has a slight warble to it. Since I am new to prospecting I just kinda figured this was normal for the Minelab PI's They tell me that their 4500 and 5000 have a nice stable threshold which allows them to hear the faint signal's better. Therefore they don't have to use as much gray matter trying to figure out a target.  I have sometimes wondered  if I am missing small pieces of gold because of this. But then again I have found some very small pieces with the 2300. So my question is....is this normal for the SDC 2300 or is something wrong with both of my machines?   I'm guessing normal.  A few nuggets found during the last couple weeks. Biggest is .52 grams
