I've seen the Hoover Boys on utube using a swim noodle fixed into a ring with fine mesh zip tied to it and a tether string so it floats close by. They dump the contents of the scoop on it and go through it with a pinpointer. Maybe that would work well for the small jewelry ?

there's been some rain recently but that particular strip is in front of some old apts. and there were some underground sprinklers so I guess it is irrigated regularly. best of luck to you in your detecting.

Hope you're being careful with that pick.  I take it the ground is really hard and rocky.

 

I suspect the double loop attachment is for possibly leather or braided cord, not a traditional chain. As for the pick, I brought it because I've never hunted that area before and was unsure what the digging conditions would be. The ground was actually fairly soft where the pendant was found. It was about 4" deep and I think it has been there maybe 5 yr's or less judging by the oxidation. The condition of the find shows how careful I was in recovering it.

Hunted an old transient camp along the river yesterday that I have been eyeballing for quite a while. It paid off after about 10 min. with this 925 eagle pendant. Found the usual brass cartridges, bullets and some modern clad also. I used my vintage tesoro bandido umax, garrett pro find pinpointer and homemade prospector pick. The pendant was found a couple feet from where I parked the bike by the tree.

I guess it depends on the situation. I personally give as much distance as possible. When searching with a friend , we will often go in opposite directions or take opposite sides of the field.  The whites trx is my favorite pinpointer

Took the xterra out again today for a couple hrs. only intent on shallow clad. I notched everything but 40,42, and 44 on the vdi scale and set the machine at 7.5 khz in 4 tone, threshold 12 and started at sensitivity 10. I was searching sidewalk strips and gradually turned the sensitivity up to 20. I was finding memorial cents, clad dimes and quarters and not a bit of trash. I went a couple blocks then got a solid 42 no matter which way l swept the coil. I was expecting a Canadian cent because they come up a little higher than a lincoln. I was very surprised to see a 1939 mercury dime in the hole.  A little further down the strip another solid 42 next to the sidewalk edge turned up a 54 Rosie. It was nice to have the machine quiet and not be bothered with trash for a change.  ☺

it is the CORS strike coil multi freq....... same thing as NEL toronado.  I've decided to wait a year or two before getting another detector. the one thing I don't like about the new detectors is the non serviceable battery.

I had it in 18.75 khz  because I was hoping for a gold coin or ring. I think the 6" dd in 18.75 khz would be a better choice for natural gold. 

It cooled off recently so I took the Xterra 705 to a park I've been hunting for a couple of years . This particular park is in an old neighborhood and has been hunted heavily for many years . I've never been able to find much there in the way of old coins just a couple wheat cents. I have used several different machines there and spent quite a few hours there over the past few years. I guess I got lucky when my first target was a 1943 s mint war nickel then 10 minutes later a 1905 indian cent. Didnt find anything else in the 45 minutes I was there. I was running the 705 in all metal coin mode, 99 tones, sensitivity 28, threshold 12 in high freq on the triple freq cors strike coil. Just wanted to share and make a post so Steve doesn't delete my acct. lol

I think it is same coil, mine even says NEL on the cable where it connects to the coil housing. I have the multi frequency model, just got it this winter. it was my first hunt with it. I really like it.

thank you very much ! I've pulled 11 barber dimes and 1 barber quarter from Missoula in the last 2 years and today I got 1926 standing liberty quarter with my t2 se and the 5" coil from a trashy heavily hunted small park in the historic Rattlesnake district. My second one, found my first slq at the Hamilton fair grounds last year.

How do you know a morel is a morel? I believe I had some come up this year but was afraid to try them. I offered some to my wife but she would not play...

a spore print is a way to identify a mushroom, never eat any mushroom unless your 100 percent sure you have it identified as some can kill with a single bite ingested. a morel resembles a sponge somewhat and occur in areas that burned the previous year 

I was in Spokane Washington recently and the weather was finally nice and some of the snow had melted and l had a couple hrs. to kill so I grabbed the xterra 705 with a CORS strike multi freq. coil and went to work in a vacant lot in a old neighborhood the city had cleared of houses. about 20 min. into it this barber dime popped out of the ground. The lot was extremely trashy , l ran the 705 in 7.5 khz, discriminate all metal with 99 tones. I was getting iron tones every couple inches but still managed to pull this coin with the big coil. My first silver coin of 2019.  Just wanted to share . Best of luck this year to everyone on the forum !

think I'll sell my MXT and get a Simplex............not !   LOL   .   think I'll keep the MXT and get a  Simplex !!!  it sure looks nice for the price !!!

I have the  F19  and used it for a couple seasons. I found the vdi numbers to be rock solid, also the 10 X 5 coil did very well in heavy trash. I also like the adjustable width notch discrimination , ferrous volume control and the adjustable tone break for cherry picking silver coins. The cons were the s rod. I prefer my G2+ , only difference between the two that I can tell is the rod and coil supplied .  I found my first seated dime and buffalo nickel with my f19. ?   The best of luck with whatever detector you choose !

I live in Missoula, about an hour drive away for me. Flathead lake has surface area of 197 sq. mi. The water level is dropped way down every spring to allow for storage of run off from the surrounding mountains. This was my first time detecting there as I usually concentrate on old sidewalk strips, schools and parks in MIssoula.

Research really pays off. would be nice to dig some relics, but finding locations and obtaining permission can be difficult as only private land can be legally hunted. BLM post's warning signs all over the forests here in Montana

The ATPro works fine and does exactly what I need it to do.  Speaking of coils I do need to get a larger coil for it.   Can't decide what to get just yet.

I guess all detectors need an array of coils to match varied conditions as they usually only come with one. no disputing the fact the at pro is a good machine, but if you want the lower or higher freq. you need to buy different detector not just a coil. I've purchased numerous aftermarket coils for most of the detectors I own. I have used NEL, CORS, and detech and they all seem to work great. I'd recommend the ultimate 13 coil for your at pro. it's light weight and performance make it a top contender. I have one for my whites detectors and am very happy  with it. Speaking for the AT Pro, I like the AT Pro when I've owned them in the past and I have a need for one.   So much better decision with a better outcome.  

By the way, the ATPro is pretty cheep right now too.

xterra 705 a money pit ? I got mine  used on ebay under $300, with 10.5"  round  hf  coil . it has found gold and silver jewelry, 1800's silver coins. Indian head penny, and a 1906 v nickel. Never had any problems with the detector. It must have found the previous owner a pile of treasure because it looked beat when I got it.

Big Arm state park on Flathead lake with my mxt and the detech 10x5 coil. ran it in relic mode with the sens. hot and the disc pot set at 2. the prospectors pick worked great to get through the cobbles to recover the targets. Highlights were .65 gram silver bracelet, 54 s and 56 wheat's, and junk butterfly pendant. it sure was nice to be out swinging. just thought I'd share my first hunt this year.
