  1. I started in the spring of 1974. First with a radio shack build your own kit. Then saved my yard money and bought a Jetco Mustang. Then a 5000-D from a local White's dealer. From then on. Yes, I have all of my catalogs.

Do you all remember when dealers use to have a test garden so a customer can check them out before buying? My dealer use to have lay-a-way program and let me put mine for 6-Months, no interest... That was pretty cool!

To this date, I use my XL Pro and Spectra V3i. A tad heavy, but not bad.

I thumb through the catalogs periodically and reminisce. Thanks for sparking the interest Ridge Runner.

  2. I personally have been using my XL Pro for more than 20 plus years. I use higher end AA alkaline batteries. Just as back up. Nothing on the cheap side cuz I know the battery life will go quicker.

I got wise one day and now I have a NUON battery charger and cord for AA's and AAA's from Batteries Plus. It charges NiMh. Try to find 2300 mAh or greater. With 8 AA's I can get 4 to 5 hours of detecting time and have plenty of power left over.

Several years ago, I purchased my friends Spectra V3i and it came with a RNB Li-Ion battery pack, 2900 mAh. This system reall lasts a long time. I can go out 4 times on hunts before i see a drop in voltage. The RNB company may or may not be in business anymore. The other option is look on eBay and you can find the Whites charging cradle, orange battery pack NiMh made specifically for the detectors mentioned.

You may also put a want ad here and ask members if the have one sitting in their closet that they are not using... maybe they will sell?

Good luck in your battery search. Remember, don't buy inexpensive batteries cuz you'll be going back to truck changing them out and getting frustrated.

  3. To answer your first question, what do you mean by fragile? Don't understand? To answer your 2nd question, I don't remember seeing anywhere or any ads with this coil having being offered for sale... Most likely never came with one.

Covers or skid plates have no affect on sensitivity  or depth in detection of targets. All they do is to provide protection of the detectors coil. Are you still interested in buying my coil??

  5. First and foremost, I agree with RickUK. Most definitely try out your friends detectors. Do plunk down any money yet. If there is something you like, such as weight, features, functionality, then by no means go back and test them again, Then tell him you'll think about it.

The days have faded when you could go into a M.D. shop and ask to try different detectors in their test garden, pick one out, buy it or put it on law-a-way.

Detectors manuf. now have nice screens, faster processors and many hunt modes for different conditions of terrain and wireless Bluetooth headphones. Most importantly for me is weight. Manuf now you use micro circuitry (surface mounted) components which are a PLUS.

Good luck in your purchase. It's  a great hobby!!

  6. Lost Scout,

The internet is a great tool but does not cover everything. The older USGS maps either paper or online are great. Yes, like others that responded, historical societies are another avenue of searching.

There is a territorial fair grounds in Albuquerque, NM that I've been to several times detecting.  it has been built up with houses here and there. I have to ask permission to detect there and I get some great finds.

Good luck in your search. It takes time so be patient.    TC-AZ

  7. Thanks for the feedback. Those hours you gave are very respectable for battery usage. Keep up the good work.

On my Whites TDI Li ion battery pks; if I'm not using for a couple of months (say 4-6), I will put them back on the charger to top them off. It seems that they deplete sooner than what I expected... Oh Well.

In the near future, I will no doubt put together a new set of Li Ion pks like you shown.  Thanks again

  8. Joe Beechnut,

Correct me if I'm wrong the TDI uses an 8-cell pk. 2 rows of 4 stacked upon itself. It is rated at 14.4 or 14.8 volts nom., right?

Lastly, I myself would prefer a bigger guage of wire, such as 14 0r 12 for the Amp draw and charging.

Like to hear some feedback on performance in the field on those batteries.

Great job. Thanks for sharing 👍
