  1. I was too excited to wait for a sub 110 degree so I tested out my new GMX in the shag carpet in my office.

I did pretty well.  I had about twice as much change there but one of my daughters spotted it and made off with it.

I think I may need to take this rug outside and shake it out.  Who knows what else is in there....

  2. This is just a fun comparison because there is no way  I'm going to buy another detector at this point but near me I see a good looking used DFX for the price of $250.  That is so similar in price to the Simplex that I am interested in which would be considered the superior detector or at least how they stack up.  From what I know they are both considered coin and relic detectors, the DFX is multi-frequency, and the Simplex is considered to have many of the newest features at a low price point.

  3. Well I bought the detector and I am gonna give it a try this weekend. It looks really good and seems to function properly.

Also I was able to register it on the website for a warranty.  I do not know what type of automated checking they do on that but so far so good.

After the first 200, the TDI used an Atmel micro that had a tendency to randomly lock up. When you turn on the TDI it would just squall. A lot of units were shipped and the problem didn't show up until after some usage. I found a nearly pin-compatible PIC micro, rewrote the code, and we had a drop-in replacement. Until I got that done we swapped out a lot of units. Sometimes more than once. The SL started out with the PIC so it never had the problem. I was never able to figure out why the Atmel locked up.

Would the unit lock up permanently or after enough resets it would operate again?

  5. Sorry if this topic has been covered before but I'm having trouble with the search function on mobile.

I am considering purchasing a second detector to go along with my White's TDI. Here in AZ I am primarily interested in gold prospecting but I am "detecting curious" when it comes to finding other objects. I'm looking for a ballpark estimate on how effective (80%-90%) the equinox 800 is compared to a dedicated gold machine like the gold master 24k or the gold monster.  Hopefully someone who has owned both types of machine can reply.

To sum up: I own a TDI and would like to increase my prospecting capabilities. How much would I be missing out on by going with the Equinox over other gold machines?

The internal mods are the ones recommended by Reg Sniff, and have been explained in  many threads. The first is changing a pair of filter capacitors to make the SL less sensitive to the sweep speed. The other is removing one capacitor, and two diodes, and putting a jumper across two legs of one of the diodes. I don't have time to get into the details this morning...I'm headed out of town. But somebody may be able to direct you to the location of the details on the mods. The second mod has been done by the factory on all SL's made since 2015, I think. Including the tan version.

I am more interested in how you feel about he mods you have done.  I have read several of the threads regarding the various options.
