You guys have convinced me to consider going without a cover on the AQ. It would be nice to have a little less weight and less maintenance.

I picked out a few things that were said that I know for a fact are not true. I'm not sure where his info came from but his source is wrong. That's all I can say...
It would be nice if you could set us straight on those untruths. What's stopping you? It's important that we know these things.

The problem with the Fisher phones is that they are waterproof which makes them expensive. I already have three sets of perfectly good headphones and don't need any more. I will also be going wireless and the Fisher phones probably won't have Bluetooth capability.

A 14" coil sounds like the perfect size to me. Since water hunters like them smaller, Fisher should offer 2 or 3 coil sizes all sold separately and sell the AQ without a coil. That way all the buyers would be happy. While they're at it, they should sell the headphones separately as well. I doubt they will do it though because a lot of their profits come from selling us stuff we don't need.
I'm surprised that detectors don't come with a shovel.
Fisher did sell the Gold Bug Pro and CZ20/21 with a choice of coil sizes and that seemed to work. I guess they could do it that way, but please, no headphones.
I just saw in the video they said the coil will be hardwired so I'm thinking they will likely be offering a water version with a small coil and a beach version with a bigger coil.

Badger, The detector he is using is an Impulse AQ - that is - it is a unit built in El Paso with the standard configuration of the Impulse AQ. The separation of the control unit from the handle is something LE JAG or Alexandre did in France after it arrived there.
Thanks for clearing that up. The modification made it confusing. I should have guessed it was an actual Fisher Impulse by the title of the video but I didn't notice the words until just now.

The Manta Project was started by Alexandre and his associates more than 6 years ago. The prototypes were called Manta and later Aqua Manta and were all hand-built by Alexandre.
The Fisher Impulse AQ is built by Fisher at their factory in El Paso.
Badger, when you commented earlier that all the targets appeared to be surface targets, I had to wonder how closely you watched the video.
What I am talking about is something you can observe if you watch closely when the handle or the face of the control pod come into the shot.
So the detector he is using is an Aqua Manta, correct?
I was talking about the tone test. All the targets he used in the tone test were surface targets.
I looked closely at a few places where the handle and face of the control pod came into view. Maybe I missed the scene you are talking about. What is it that you want us to notice?

I’m a little surprised that no one has commented on what is “unusual” in this video. He has an AQ Limited - but it isn’t in a “standard” configuration - probably because LE JAG is used to remote control boxes from many years of working with Manta prototypes.
I always thought the prototype he uses was called the Aqua Manta. The Limited is made by FT and has the control box mounted on the handle. Was the Aqua Manta made by FT?

I'll definitely be wanting a coil cover. There is no resin on earth that will hold up to the rocky beaches I hunt. I hope when they design it that they make it easy to remove for cleaning.

I've done that also and it works. 👍

That's fine that you feel that way. I just prefer covers over coatings.

I find marine epoxy to hold up beyond well. Once coated, maybe a slight touch-up yearly.
I should add that I am a coil scrubber. My coil stays glued to the beach.
It's pretty much the same stuff that the coil is filled with. All you are doing is making the bottom a bit thicker and ruining the resale value at the same time.
I'm a scrubber too. Sand isn't very abrasive. If all I hunted was sand, I wouldn't even bother with a cover. The problem we have on our beaches is rocks. Rocks can chew up a coil pretty quickly.
-
I would not expect any type of epoxy to hold up very well. It's got to be plastic. I zip tied a frisbee to the coil of my CZ20 and that worked pretty well.

With very high tides, between the lowest point and the highest there are 10 meters depth..
Wow, I never knew France had such large tides. That's like Bay of Fundy size tides. The tide must go out a mile. I'd love to try prospecting there.
We only have 4 meter tides in New Hampshire.

Watched it a second time and this time stayed with it long enough to see the tone test near the end. I did find that useful.
I heard him say what sounded like Discri 4.0 just before the bullet signal changed to a different tone.
Still have to consider that these are just surface targets.

I don't get the point of his videos. It's just a guy digging targets on a beach. It tells us nothing about the AQ.

You would have preferred that there was NO manual?😉
This manual will be modified later but the mods will only be slight updates about the battery aspects. Nothing dramatic!!
No, I meant what I said as a good thing. Not every detector company would go that extra mile.
Every page that shows the battery or mentions the battery will need to be edited. That's a dozen or more pages that will need all new drawings and updated instructions/specs in the next manual. Plus the word Limited at the top of every page will need to be removed. You can hardly call those slight updates.
-
Pretty amazing that they went out of their way to create a manual for a detector that will be less than 100 units and soon be out of production.
-
That was fast. You spoke and it happened. 👍

He said that field 2 was perfect/stable right? Well, i guess that if he using disc from -9 to any low ID ( something between 1 and 5, the machine will be looking stable... but we all know that behind the scene, the machine is being overcharged with lots of signals under that disc. It's like a Painkiller!😀 It won't fix any health problem, it will just mask the pain!
I agree. I think that must be what he is experiencing. Tell him to try it in all metal and see how it does.
I'm so used to always hunting with the horseshoe on, I forget that some people use discrimination.
-
He must be joking. No way will Field mode work better than Beach mode in wet saltwater sand. Even brackish conditions will kill the performance of Field mode.
-
If I remember correctly, wasn't part of the delay due to legal restraints concerning the 18650 battery cells? It just dawned on me that they could easily bypass any battery legality nonsense by simply not including them with the detector.

I always hunt with the horse shoe on (all metal) and have the iron volume turned all the way down. That way, I hardly notice the low tones.
All metal enhances the non-ferrous tones in a good way. There is definitely a difference in tone quality with all metal on.
I also constantly monitor how much iron is around so that I know where to set the Recovery Speed.
Does Anyone Hunt Without A Coil Cover?

Is anyone hunting without a coil cover? If so, how is it holding up?
There has been some talk over on the FT forum about how the Impulse AQ coil is so tough that it doesn't need a coil cover. I wonder if Minelab coils are just as strong.
I've gone through a few coil covers in my day but they are made of soft plastic. The coil itself is hard epoxy. Are covers really necessary? I've always just accepted that they are, but now I'm questioning it.
