This morning was as windy as yesterday, 30 mph with gusts to 45. It was supposed to settle down and stay kinda cool, so I decided to jump in the waders and hit the river.

Never saw so much beach before! The tide was way out. I knew low tide was after 12 further down the river so going a couple hours earlier would do.20210501_111110.thumb.jpg.d0e85f28f98ef17a6444b370d5ac0f36.jpg

Even the old V8 engine block was out of the water today.20210501_115336.thumb.jpg.c3b569c5dad87e8b5b36d987a5a7a761.jpg

In 5 hours I did pretty good. Got some trash but nothing too trifling, a couple of pull tabs and a beer can or two, some fishing tackle, shotgun shells and some odd bits of lead.20210501_200122.thumb.jpg.6d79d59e1255b757ec37c42a07c0e9dc.jpg

Bronze bead or roller of some sort, it is not hollow. Nice fancy rivet with a sun pattern, even the shank is patterned. Thin brass device holder of some sort, looks like it had an insert, either stone or cloisonne. Not sure what the copper circular object is but it is thick, heavy and appears to have snapped off something.

1918 Buffalo nickel, undated Buffalo, wheat and IHP with no dates. I had to break them out of their encrustation. The Buffalos were 9/10, the pennies both 14.

And the find of the day, I was surprised:20210501_195508.thumb.jpg.0b249edbdf40c6bccacabf6fa1960050.jpg

Solid brass Brown Bess musket buttplate with engraving. At first I thought it was for an Enfield but it's too big. Dates from mid 1700s to mid 1800s.

Either this place was hit hard for silver or I need a PI detector. 😀 Nickels and pennies are everywhere, there's gotta be some silver coins here.

Talk about cool finds!   I like the buttplate

  2. Today the better half and I hit the camp.  She used the Equinox with 6” coil because the 11” is too heavy for her.  I had the DEUS with 11” coil.  The DEUS takes some concentration but it does pull some stuff out.  Tiny to large it sees it.  I don’t mind the false at times on flat iron.  Anyways here are some pics of my finds today.   The little button is a sailing ship.  The pistol probably has a tale or two.  The buckle was in a bed of iron and gave a sharp blip on the DEUS.

  3. Years back a family friend was moving and we went to say goodbye.  On the way out I noticed an old sewing kit in the trash so me being me, I snagged it.  It had these two buttons in with the other stuff.  I’m just curious if anybody knows the age of these? They look like really nice versions of what we all dig on occasion.  Cell phone pics aren’t the greatest.

I know I keep joking about "moving to the Sierra foothills" in answer to the md'ing show & tell.  And thus moving in on such md'ing pursuits.  Yet, I'm at the age (60 now, on central CA real estate holdings) , where my wife & I are actually eyeing locations along the historic Hwy 49 corridor.   Because: Correct me if I'm wrong, but that corridor is becoming an increasingly popular area for empty nesters and retirees ?

But as I say:  Pay no attention to the mysterious man in the trench-coat seen milling around with the GPS tracking device @ your front driveway.  haha

Empty nesters etc maybe Sonora area north.  Coulterville area is dead and its a long drive to any shopping.  Seems that the back roads I have traveled forever are now all busy and there is a lot of trash and dumping, Shooters leave messes everywhere.

revealing finds, chines coin may indicate that after the good stuff was found they moved in to finish up . and the seated saw at least 20 years circulation, I supose it was easy to loos things in the mud and dirt, and clothes where falling apart.

We have found only 2 Chinese coins and 1 Chinese lock.   The Chinese coins were 100 plus yards apart.  I would think there would be more but no so.   I think out of all the coins (11) we have found here, all but 1 was next to a piece of slate sticking up from the ground.   It is a very interesting place that gives up a little at a time at this point.

Welcome to the harsh-cruel-reality of the Deus.  Although it's touted as the "cat's meow" in iron ridden sites, yet .... it is indeed *weak* on flat tin iron type objects.  Items that other standard discriminators effortlessly pass.

The Deus faithful will say that there's audio clues that can tell the difference.  But I'm still dubious of one detail :  Will any such audio clues *only work* when there is a "clear line of sight" to the target ?  Ie.: non masked ?  If so, then ... gee, so too can standard machines likewise get a "clean signal" on an un-obstructed signal ?

But, like you ..... I'm still learning it.

Ok Tom I get it and you are right it does seem to like the flat iron..  I still have the Nox for fast moving hunting.  I am new to the DEUS but I like it.

Well.....weekend end is over. Anything to show us?

Hi EL,  It was my first run with the DEUS and it was pretty warm out in the sun.  I managed to find a complete and in very good shape pick, a small two piece button and a few musket balls and lead pieces.  One thing I  keep finding are wads of thin lead sheets.  I would guess that was what they bought to melt for pistol/rifle balls?  I need some time with the DEUS to get it down and I bought it with the 11 inch coil when the 9 inch was probably what I needed.

Chris, one thing you might dislike, on the Deus (if  you're accustomed to other machines), is that the Deus will "ring the bells of Notre Dame" over things like rusty crown caps, domino sized portions of flat-tin, large rusty bolts , etc....  Whereas other machines easily reject such iron, right ?

After much hair-pulling and digging 1000 such cr*p items, I have come to understand what tones a person *could* pass, if they wanted to cut down on the iron-falses.  HOWEVER, I am NOT convinced of this :  If a person is getting the Deus because it's the "cat's meow in seeing through iron-masking", then :  How can he be sure that the iron that he's "passing" isn't masking a goodie below it ?

In other words, the moment you begin to "be picky" and only dig the signals that are for-sure a conductive target, then :  It seems to me that that means you had a "clear line of sight" to that conductive target.  Such that it had the right audio clues, eh ?  Well gee, if we all had to wait till we had a "clear line of site" to a target, then ... Gee, even my explorer will likewise get a "nice-clean signal" on targets to which aren't masked.  So what's the point of even switching then ?  Aaarrghhh.

So to that extent, I'm a little frustrated with this.   So thus far, I'm only using it for specialized occasions (extreme relicky pursuits), where I'm game to dig a bunch of iron-falses .  It's just the "cost to  pay" to not miss stuff I guess.

And it's kind of site-specific :  If the location was in play up to the 1920s (the throw-away era of rusty soldered can tops, flat tin, etc....), then it can be very punishing.   Yet at another site I hit (which was vacated by 1850-ish), then very little of these type iron items exist, in the first place.

Anyhow, if you need any coaching , I'll convey what I've learned, the settings, etc...

Tom, the DEUS is just another “tool” in my shed.   The Equinox has absolutely killed it for me and the Vanquish my wife uses literally sucks with the mineralization where we currently hunt.   The Nox is quiet and hits coins like Thor’s hammer.   The Vanquish leaves you guessing the whole time.   I bought the Deus as a toy basically and I intend to see what it can do.   Funny that the Deus sounds like a kids fart machine and again the Nox is sweet as pie. We shall see how it works out. I know another gold rush relic hunter who swears by the DEUS and he has been really helpful and knowledgeable with my finds. So I’ve already bought it and I will find the goods with it God willing.    I almost bought a CTX but the price is way high for something that could be replaced anytime.

Haha, I'm 61, aching muscles are daily now. Since I go out almost every day, it's not so bad anymore other than an arm cramp now and again. I used a Limbsaver sling at the beach because I wasn't moving as slow as I usually do. When scouting it's the worst.

I do get "Trigger Finger", my right ring finger locks up on me overnight, and it hurts to straighten it. Fixed that problem by wearing that huge tungsten ring I dug at the beach. 😀

Interesting because after a full day of detecting, I will wake up with my right middle finger locked up.  Feels weird.  I’m kinda glad I’m not the only one.

  10. F350. The Bowie is a favorite of mine.  Caprock the Deus came in today but the coil charge clip wasn’t in the box so I called them and it’s on the way.   Tom,  I have identified 7  cabin sites, only one is still somewhat “standing”.  This area is very long  and seems the cabins were in two groups.  I haven’t found it on old maps but it’s in line with a few known sites.   I’ll keep plugging away at it but damn those aching muscles.

  11. We headed out Saturday morning to the camp.  Wife has given up on the Vanquish because all she digs is square nails.  So we swapped detectors later in the day.   She then found an ax head and a big chisel.  I scored the dime and other stuff with the Equinox before the switch.   We bought a curio cabinet to house our growing collection of history so I will include a photo of it.    Hope everyone is doing well out there.

    Nice finds Chris!

Wasn't able to go out this morning because of a satellite malfunction but gonna hit the beach this evening. You are one of those folks with natural luck and talent finding stuff.

I do tend to go out with my eyes wide open and look for disturbed areas or foundations.  I have mostly been a nugget shooter but the relics are more fun at this point so,  going back to places I found nugget hunting will keep me busy for a while.
