I have had 10 trips to Leonora, which is close by. May to August would be my range of best time. When the rain hit most unsealed roads are closed, but you can get to some places on the sealed road and still find gold.  ...... Note no red dust on 4WD  a free car wash from the Gods ......

Geof, I bet around those sealed road you must have section 40e as well to be able to prospect?

Been quite a few years since I've been there... phone service was poor except near the major mines or on high hills. If comms are a worry, get a Zoleo sat communicator to link to your phone.

thanks mate only to know now...check google and many good reviews. does it support my data connection onto the internet?

Mid Winter is ideal, normally June-August. But Ive been there from April until late October, all depends on your ability to handle the heat. I hate anything over 30C when you're out all day. But, night detecting or morning until midday works well too. In Winter, rain is the biggest issue...if it dumps more than 10mm in a day, you're stuck for at least a week. All roads become impassable.

Hey thanks Aureous. I thought winter there is dry and less rain than summer?

    嗨朋友,

    我也是中国人。哈哈。

Hello, nice to meet you. I am in Northwest China. There have been gold mining records along the Altun Mountains/Altay Mountains since ancient times. With the strengthening of environmental protection in China, large machinery is no longer allowed (or there is no money to open the road) , You can only choose metal detectors with better mobility and no damage to the environment. Xinjiang/Gansu/Qinghai/ relatively use gold detectors.

Very curious here too. I know someone in Macau and she said basically not possible for foreign people, and even for Chinese citizens it would be difficult due to government as well as some organized crime in rural areas. But clearly it is possible for some people...

I'd be interested to know more, just for general interest.

    Hey mate,

I am from China so my understanding is a no go. If you found gold or relics and was known to government, you will need to hand them in otherwise you will be in trouble.

Having said that, since China is big and there are many places with long history, it is possible that you found gold and keep it to yourself. A month ago I saw a guy post anonamously a pic of gold decration he found. Looks good and should worth some money.

The true potential of the GPZ isn’t realised unless run in normal where it shows the GPX who’s boss even on tiny gold with the right coil, yes it may miss some odd specci  type gold but we don’t really have it here, more water worn little lumps the GPZ loves, the key to the GPZ 8000 will be getting normal like performance in difficult.  If they can do that you’ll see what us “normal” people have been saying all along 😊

It seems they achieved that with the 6000, there isn’t much between normal and difficult.

Lighter coils are key for me with the GPZ as I don’t use any swing arms or bungees and other gadgets, I found the hip stick very awkward as you dig far too often here and the ground is rarely flat.

Everyone is different though, we obviously have different tolerances for detector weights.  I like the heavy sturdy GPZ for bowling over long grass and bushes, something I can’t do with the 6000.

Hi mate what coil you using?

Hey Jack i am probobly going to see second hand next week. 3 hour drive. Gpz 7000 for 6000 dollars built in 2019, just out of warranty. Either or, I think yes to master a machine is more important than thinking of which to buy. Will get back to you soon.

It will probably sound like iron. I can't emphasize enough that relying too much on iron discrimination and tone wizardry is a risky proposition with any PI detector.

As far as which you should own, that is a decision for you to make. I am not a salesperson and not in the business of trying to sort things out for anyone but myself. I have posted several times about the Axiom vs 6000 already, each time with my personal opinion on the subject. I have given what will likely be my last response as regards that subject just this morning on this thread, and will just point people there in the future. If you are not in a rush, the best bet is to wait 6 months and let the dust settle from actual purchasers getting out and using the detector, like Novic in Australia on the thread I just linked to. I think relying on any one opinion, even my own, is not a good idea. Time and consensus views are a much better way to go if you can afford to wait.

    Hi Steve,

I really appreciate your reply and yes I will wait for while and see. Merry Christmas.

    Kind regards,
    Ethan

  9. Hi Steven,

Thank you for being very informative in providing such a great video.

I do have a question: with iron check what if there is a gold nugget as well as a iron nail?  IDK what will be that sound like.

Also I am based in Australia and will be go prospecting in WA again next year. I am sort of wondering which should I have, a GPX 6000 (dad already has one) or Axiom? ( I have seen your reviews on different detectors however I still wonder if you have some personal opinion?

    Many Thanks,
    Ethan

Ethan is looking for a second hand detector, as someone who's never bought a new vehicle in my life I get it. But there are certain things I may not buy second hand, detectors may be one of them. If I was buying a detector that I was completely familiar with then yes I would, but what happens when you have never used the machine before. There are many factors to consider here, The amount of money involved is one I guess, second hand GPZ 7000's and GPX 6000's are holding their value pretty well in Australia, is the saving worth the risk especially when you consider that if you haven't used the detector how do you know if it's working properly. If you are looking for older or cheaper machines then this becomes less important. As some one who may consider buying an expensive P.I. machine secondhand, I would like to hear how others have approached this and how many would never buy a used machine and why ?

you are asking my questions Thanks Jack. I have been wondering if Axiom is ok for me, however I am a green hand here I have to say.

Yeah Ethan I can't comment on the weight issue for others, only my self. At my age, even my equinox is too heavy to swing for an extended time. I use a harness which is just an 'occy' strap with one end in a hole on the top shaft the other hooked into a small backpack. But even way back when I was young I much preferred a hip mount, I had an excalibur II that was also much better hip mounted. I seems like that may not be an option any more but you can buy a harness. Personally I wouldn't buy a detector based on weight they all get heavy after a while, balance is more important. Just my take on it Ethan. Let me know what you decide and give me your thoughts on what you think of it, when you get out into a gold field.

    Sure thanks Jack will do.

No Ethan, I've never used one, Phrunt recently posted a video of the Garrett Crew doing a test run Tibooboorroo, I think he meant Tibooburra. Also NQExplorers have a couple of videos on youtube. They are being talked about on this forum so you should be able to make up your mind about them. From what I've seen they look good, let me know how you get on.

    Hi Jack,

I have not made up my mind yet. I have been searching on gumtree AU as well and I can see there are more 7k than 6k on gumtree. IDK if that was because they found 7k is too heavy to use?

At this stage I am open-minded to 6k, 7k and Axiom.

Nenad put up a video using the 12x7"

It's sounding like it's a lot more stable than the 11", Nenad even points out it's running smoother allowing him to bump the sensitivity up a couple of clicks.  I like what I see with the size/shape of it and certainly the smoother running which you can clearly hear in the video.  I am looking forward to getting this coil.

I've always liked Nenad's videos, he shows it how it is junk and all.

Hi mate what you think of 16x10 coil?

  14. 20 hours ago, blackjack said:

Hey Ethan, I can relate to what geof_junk is saying, early VLF's weren't any were near as sensitive as the modern generation of VLF's. I've had plenty of experience using VLF's in the 1980's and hot rocks weren't really an issue, but after a recent trip to W.A. and here in Tasmania there are places where my nox 800 was picking up as G_J says 3-4 hot rocks per swing. Most of the time in factory settings the nox will disc. out hot rocks, but when you are in areas with extremely hot rocks, i.e. showing a solid 11-16 signal all you can do is notch discriminate them out. This works very well, but of course you will miss gold in this range. I will stand corrected, but I don't think the GM has notch disc. So if you are going to use a VLF in these areas you need that option. You mentioned you had a 6000 on your last trip, if so then there's you answer. From what I've heard the 6000's are very good on small gold. If for other reasons you need another machine and can't afford a P.I then look for a VLF with notch disc. The Equinox 800 does handle hot ground very well for a VLF, that's the only machine I'm qualified to comment on.

    Hey Jack,

I am thinking to buy garret Axiom if u have any advice?

In the areas that I detected in WA with a VLF detector it was not the hot ground it was the hot rocks 3 or 4 target signal per swing from them in some spots. At the time I had 25 years experience with VLF detector at the time. Using Minlab detectors post 2003 I had no problems with the PI detector in the same area. As for depth the hot ground of Vic was a lot worse for the VLF but hot rocks were only a mild problems.

Thanks. Looks like better sell 1000

    Hi Ethan.

I'm sorry that there hasn't been much response to your question here but it also might be a bit telling in that maybe many people aren't using the Gold Monster in Western Australia.

As with many spots across Australia the ground in WA can be quite variable, very mineralised and have various amounts of hot rocks.  However, prior to the introduction of PI machines a VLF was all that they used in WA. and they found gold so it is possible.

I know with my trip to WA in June this year that on one of the little patches we found the Gold Monster would have located about half of the gold weight that we found as it was quite shallow and of decent size (multi gram).   But, there were also many pieces that a VLF would not have got anywhere near.

Not having used a VLF in WA myself I am loathe to give too much advice without much to back it up, but a PI would be a better option for handling WA conditions in my opinion.  Travelling from SA to WA goldfields is a long way to go only to be disappointed and frustrated by ground noise and digging ghost signals.   Something like an SDC would be a great beginners detector, if it is in your price range, as it is generally exceptional at handling ground noise and knocking out hot rocks.

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers, NE.

    Hi mate,

Thanks for being so informative. I only found my post now.

I went to WA this time with GM and 6000, however we found nothing. Maybe we were too rush and the weather was hot and we didnot buy section 40e.

My GM kept making noise and 6000 generally does better knocking out that noise. However there was once in one area GM found a very small piece wrap foil where 6000 does not react at all.

I am planning to go WA next year again with another 6000 and I am selling  my GM1000.
