Let's get "serious", you're on to a great spot. ๐Ÿ˜ I wouldn't post much info on that place, but I'd sure be researching and posting the coins. ๐Ÿค” Dates/mintmarks matter.

Sad that there isn't a fool proof way to clean silver coins, especially when beach crusted. ๐Ÿ˜ต If you rub them with your fingers in a field, they get scratched.

Excellent stuff you've been posting, "seriously" ๐Ÿ˜€. Good job. ๐Ÿ‘ I'd be interested in your trash to finds ratio!

Also if you could take sharper photos of both sides, you would greatly appease our resident numismatist. I couldn't be more Sirius about that. ๐Ÿคช

    Here you go.

I'm using the latest beta version and the falsing i'm getting is usually when there's a ton of black sand causing the detector to produce a dull sound and jump between 10 and 60. Nothing too concerning as I just ignore it and listen to sharper sounds instead.

Might have an issue with dry sand. The targets either keep disappearing or they were never there to begin with. Possible falsing?ย

  3. It's over my favorite beach has slowed production due to sanding in. I could tell because the exposed posts from a dock that once stood on the beach has been mostly covered up. The posts were really exposed for about 2 weeks and alot of stuff could be found due to the lack of sand. Ah well it was great while it lasted, Now I have to look for another beach to hang out at.
Found a beach that is frequented by alot of people. Followed a tip that Merrill spoke about where if you find green coins, slow your roll because you might find more. Indeed I did find more coins and found myself in a coin line; which could also translate to an area where a ton of stuff just consolidated for long periods of time. My luck wasn't great, I found a toe ring near the coin line that is just a junker, and a ton of clad. The rest of the beach produced pretty much nothing. My favorite beach did manage to produce one last silver quarter from 1964 though.

You might want to try Navel Jelly on one of your crusty non Copper coins. Let it soak several hours. I have had good luck with it on coins the concretion won't break off of with light blows from a Jeweler's hammer.

i've heard about the Vaseline trick, might have to do that while i'm out hunting today!

I'd say silver coins are a rare find. Especially at the beach. I'd love to know what part of the coast you are hunting, without giving away the actual location of course. Consider yourself very lucky. It sounds like you've got a great spot there and not much competition.

Here are a couple of French colonial silvers that I dug on a NH beach a few years back. 1746 and 1791.

West coast central valley, but there's plenty of competition! A guy nearby found several silver coins at the same beach more last saturday too! It's a real hot spot that keeps replenishing.

How perceptive of you to deduce that this was the same beach! People go to that beach all the time so, it's no secret there has been good stuff to find there. There's even a guy who lives near the beach with a nox 600, so he's much much closer to the beach than I am and able to go often too! I'm not too worried though, the beach will continue to wash things in as long as the tides have a path to do so.

Sadly the otherside is still crusted so I will need to run it through electrolysis again when I'm on a rest day.

Here's what I found with that crusted what I suspect to be a walking liberty.

    Thanks Doc!

I believe that too, they couldn't have covered all 200 acres. I did get this last week, and a mercury dime a year and a half ago. Also 2/3ds of a Trime.ย 20230129_103930.thumb.jpg.593446c63be87a010fb32e9135724882.jpg

It was in a random spot in a place they wouldn't have gone. Local report says they were there every day for 3 weeks, and they didn't have permission from the primary owner. Seems some hunters have nighthawked it too.

Going to try different detectors, settings and stuff there. ๐Ÿ™‚

Impressive find! Are these things rare or something? I found this one on a beach yesterday and it was the first one I found. I personally don't really expect to find them on beaches but I have, plus merc dimes too.

Sounds like you have a good area and are learning alot. I love that gravelly sand in general. Also start paying attention to the colors. Over time you will be able to just look at the sand color and know if it's going to be a good day or not. A deep PI machine is my weapon of choice for this scenario. GL

Fluffy sand is the worst from what I experienced over the weekend. There's just nothing to be found there.

  9. Made some more observations these last few days. The gravel bed that I used to hunt on my favorite beach has pretty much gone and the coins with it. Instead something else popped up on the beach which is really compact gravelly sand further down. This area shifted from being a bad area to a loaded area with plenty of coins to be had, including the surprising find of a standing liberty! It is important to note that the area where there was compact gravelly sand also did not have a barrier of gravel where the waves meet the beach, thus more stuff was able to migrate up the wet sand I would think.
This idea was replicated at another beach where the main focus was in front of gravel beds with no gravel at the water line, and I found tons of coins. I also found a really worn merc dime, a silver ring, and possibly a silver heart of some sort. Solid day today, but man i'm tired. No gold yet, but i'm still trying!

Welcome to detecting. ๐Ÿ™‚ You entered the hobby at a good time, for the most part the "beep dig" detectors are pretty much done. It's far from perfect but light years ahead of what it used to be. I tried it many years ago and was put off by the uncertainty.

My favorite iffy signal is a "gettinbetter", one that starts out mid-range and ends up being a high conductor like silver. The good comes with the bad. Keeping at it will bring you better results over time. Learn to laugh at pull tabs and bottle caps ๐Ÿคฃ

And guess what? If you get another detector you start all over again. ๐Ÿ˜€

The more you understand what you read here, the sharper your skill will become, but nothing beats persistence.

My favorite signal is "this is probably a nickel" Breaking the halo doesn't change the signal (cause there probably wasn't one to begin with) and it stays within the range of 23-25. If you lower your expectations you won't be disappointed as often. But the surprises are always welcome. (I have yet to find gold rings though!)

  11. I personally think merrill is wacky, but for the novice detectorist like myself who is unversed in everything that is metal detecting, he has good tips for hunting beaches (which are my primary hunting grounds). At the very least he and several others have convinced me to purchase my first metal detector (The Legend) through the reviews that I have seen. So it definitely brings more people into the fold to show what it's like to metal detect and the kinds of things to expect, as well as tips and tricks to the trade. Even if he has a tendency to beย  dramatic.

Imagine releasing a product that doesn't properly do what you promised it would do.... and then blaming the malfunction on thoseย  people who didn't purchase said product....whilst telling those who bought it that they must buy it again every 6 months...๐Ÿ˜‚

Honestly sounds like coming out with a new apple product every year with minor changes to each iteration. You're only as good as your tools, but you also need to know how to use your tools properly as well! It's the yin and yang of metal detecting I would think! Better to master what you have first, before diving into the rabbit hole of the latest and "greatest" thing.

I agree on this one. I usually like his videos. Except for some of his sound effects and comedic bits he sometimes throws in. These were a bit strange. But I do give him credit for getting a response/reply from ML. Nobody else seems to get a reaction. Better than that other guy , who I just don't watch anymore.

    haagen-daz has been unlockedย

  14. I've heard of some people coming across this issue with the VDI numbers, (myself included) where a target in the wet sand starts at 25-35 then shoots up to zinc pennies numbers of 45-46 right after digging. It would seem like The Legend is weak in this regard compared to other detectors, but I only own the Legend so I cannot make comparisons. So I wanted to ask those who own multiple detectors: Is the target ID numbers of buried objects in wet sand more inaccurate for the Legend, compared to other brands? If so, we should definitely petition Nokta to fix this issue in upcoming updates.ย

Many of the beaches here are pounded by the locals and mostly sanded.

Towel lines and cuts been best for me. Labrador current and rip tides here make wading bit risky and sand fills in too fast. Besides I look really out of place with waders on in the middle of summer ๐Ÿ™‚

River hunting I go for the lead edge of runs where you see gravel. If your hitting aluminum and sand your too far down.

Still use my old Whites/Rtg basket scoop, put a fine hole bottom insert for the tinies. Hard to beat a 1.8 lb scoop.

I'm hunting in the winter, so I'm not sure where the towel line is and it's probably been hunted out already by actual local detectorists. My best bet is the new stuff that keeps washing in at that gravel bed, but I will be checking out a nearby smaller new beach soon. As soon as my hands heal from over working them these past two days!ย :biggrin:ย
Haven't seen many cuts, and the only cuts i've seen so far are from stuff getting sanded in. Waves are up to that cut already so it's tough to get into that area. I didn't find much when I went there last week.ย
    Thanks for the advice!
