  1. Hit a park that has been hammered over the years... Not a ton of trash but not clean either. There's one football field sized pocket in the whole park with undisturbed dirt where i found a 1918 slq, 2 mercs, a silver half dollar, and a dozen or so wheaties last year year in around 20 hunts. Oddly, the newest coins i find in this area are mid 1960s even though the park is still in use today. After 20ish hunts It dried up w the simplex and i wasn't finding anything good so i moved on.

Tonight i hit it with the d2 with the 11x13 coil w a custom silver mode and got a 1923 merc in my first hole, ended up also finding a 1958 roosie, 1942 quarter, and 4 wheaties from the mid 40s.

I was using a custom silver mode and it was hitting all these coins around 10 inches deep. The quarter was a really jumpy signal but kept bouncing around w inconsistent hits of 97 and 99.

I know the 11x13 got me some extra depth, and more importantly some increased coverage with each swing. This is my best day at a park and i only hunted for 1.5 hrs or so.

If you haven't tried the 11x13, it is killer. I seldom use my 9 inch coil these days since i mainly beach hunt. I was glad to see the trash wasnt any issue for the larger coil. My only real knowledge to share is that this is my second deep silver quarter that bounced around a ton at around 10 inches deep. The 99 signal happened on them both, which was my key to dig.

  2. I notch it because its the only way ive found it tolerable to run in one area. There are literally hundreds of ferrous targets and i just have seemed to do better notching and it doesnt make my ears bleed hearing random mid 80s tones every 3 inches. And yes, theyre all real iron targets. Ive yet to dig anything in the 70s or 80s in that area that wasnt trash.

I havent tried dive mode. Does it eliminate large iron and iron falsing?

  3. I haven't yet figured out what magnetic reject does and when to use it. I also don'tquite undrrstand when to use ground balance tracking. Hoping for some input...

My beach ground balances at about 87 in the damp sand. But the dry sand is very black and full of iron (and old buffalo nickels!). I barely pick up any coins in the black sand any coins deeper than 4-5 inches dont seem to get picked up. That being said, i know they are there as I've dug them up while digging for shallower coins.

    I guess my questions are...

    1. Do you ever use GB tracking? If so, when is it helpful?

    2. WTF is magnetic reject and when should it be used vs not used?

I have a few custom programs set to coin shoot in black sand. Mainly programs to notch out iron falsing and aluminum but trying to refine these to better sort out black sand.

  4. Hi all - im mainly a beach hunter these days and I'm curious if you all have noticed any specific types of items in the areas you find jewelry.

The beaches I hunt seem to stack up items in one or two areas but I haven't noticed any patterns yet for what types of items would be found near jewelry. Im assuming it might depend on the material type for jewelry. That being said, i do notice that i have days i find quarters, days i find nickels, days i find pennies, and days for dimes... i seem to find dramatically  more of one single coin type than i do on others but it really varies day to day on which kind i find.

Also, we've all heard of coin lines and I'm curious if you find items like coins in horizontal lines or vertical lines? Most of my beach finds seem to come more in short 50 ft (horizontal) by 30 ft (vertical) areas and then nothing on the entire rest of the beach. I did however have one day where i was finding coins and jewelry in a horizontal line around 10 ft wide and 200 ft long. On that day i found 5 rings, a gold cross, and some other random jewelry.

I'm hoping others may be able to shed light on patterns to look for when looking for rings. For the past two months all of my finds have come from the same small section of beach regardless of the day, tides, sand levels, etc.

  5. Welcome to the d2 team. I got mine around mid to late january and it is just fantastic. I dont think there's a more comfotable or ergonomic machine and the d2 has awesome customization options that will help you better customize the detector to specific sites or applications.

Or get a Blu3 Nemo or Nomad? It's still a good idea to get certified for diving whether using surface supplied air or compressed air. I am hoping to use my Nemo or Nomad in Maui in a couple weeks along with a deus ii. Ususally I beach detect but have been really wanting to try underwater detecting.

I do dig the nomad but 30 ft just isn't deep enough. I want to spear fish, detect, and explore. If the price came down id do it for freshwater swimming holes but at that price i can get a killer scuba setup that gives me way more flexibility. Another problem is that i want to dive a few rivers which will push the nomad downstream. It is just limited... cool but limited.

Would you like to share your audio set-up?

I use standard audio from beach and beach sensitive. I have a tried modifying the two modes a bit but built a lot of confidence with the standard layout. I'm using the 11x13 coil so i do have a second program saved with high reactivity for areas where i get into more iron with coins mixed in.

  8. Thanks F350. I can't seem to figure it out but about half the coins i find are caked with green and then i find others that are absolutely perfect. There's an area of the beach where the gnarly ones come from (dry blackish sand above the high water level) then another area about low tide level where they've all been looking great. That being said, we have lost 5-10 vertical feet of sand this year so I'm sure things moved around a ton.

  9. I have the 9" and the 11x13. The 11x13 is WAY heavier than the 9" and changes the feel of the detector. It's not that it's heavy, it's just... slow feeling. I guess it is simple physics. It takes more effort to swing but also more effort to stop. If you have shoulder issues it might be a problem.  That being said, the coverage is fantastic and i notice no difference in tones or vdi vs the 9". Battery life seems the same and i dont feel the shaft flex that you'll hear others mention.

I'd recommend the 11x13 based on my beaches which are low-trash and low population. I dig a bit more as the precision isn't there but i am certain i find more with it because of the large coverage. I don't think you can go wrong with it. It is also great to have a second coil for those really long days or in case you forget to charge one!

  10. This weekend i took to the beach again since things are extremely washed out here in CA (thanks Tom for all the erosion advice). I live in an area of CA without many people which is nice because i can actually find parking but our water here is really cold so most folks aren't swimming. Less swimming isnt good for jewelery but the main beach i frequent goes back to the mid 1800s so there's always a chance of finding some old stuff.

So far I've found around 25 rings at this beach (only two gold) and around a half dozen silver coins and a dozen or so wheat pennies. On friday i set out and got a solid 97 on the d2. Poppup up a scoop with my shovel and out popped a statue of liberty head... clearly not gold... larger than a quarter but smaller than a half dollar. It turns out i located a Theodor Bollenhagen coin dating between 1845 and 1860! This is my first 1800s coin and pretty cool to find on a beach! The front is lady liberty and the back is NYC City Hall. Bad photo, it has a lot more detail in person.

The next day i dug a lot of quarters, one 1945 silver dime, a 1946 wheatie, and as i was about to leave i found another patch of coins in a 20x20 area. My beach has a lot oh zinc pennies that ring up at every vdi you could imagine from around 50-90. While using beach mode and beach sensetive they do generally have a little twang to the sound that is a dead giveaway though... either way, i dig around 75% of them since im still learning a lot. I was tired and about to pack it up when i got a solid repeatable 88, too low for a dime and very crisp with none of the inconsistency of a zinc penny. So i popped it up and out came an 1896 indian head! My oldest currency I've found and really exciting to find at the beach.

These two coins really got me pumped because my county was TINY in the mid 1800s with only 350 residents county-wide in 1850! Next to the indian head i found a small brass coin/token with L.S. 871 stamped in it with a hole in the middle. I'm thinking it may be a luggage token... could the LS possibly stand for Luggage Slip? It was found near the old drop off for the train. Anyways, my lesson here was that the audio tells much more than the vdi and that learning the d2 tones can really save you if you aren't a "dig everything" person.

  11. Ive got about 20 hours on the 11x13 now and can't say enough about it. Im a beach hunter and have been doing great with it. No gold yet but got an 1896 indian head and a token from 1845!  It hammered on them both loud and clear. I love the extra coverage vs the 9 inch!

  12. I got the 11x13 also and took it for a spin tonight. I did not notice any TID differences but coins seemed to ping much harder. I did get one repeatable 99 signal that ended up a tiny piece of iron. I hadn't had that happen w the 9 inch coil and it seemed quite odd. As for bottle caps, it treated them just like the 9 inch coil, which i am stoked about.

As for comfort... the 13 is much heavier than the 9 inch coil but didnt feel like i was gonna get tired. I didnt feel the need for a counter balance but im 38 with no arm or shoulder issues. I do have a shoulder strap to help if i need it.

I just love that a second coil is always fully charged and ready to go now, I'll have more time to mess w it tomorrow if the rain decides to stop for a bit!
