  1. That’s good info! What do you recommend on how to look closer? They are pretty rusted up. Thanks for the assist!
  2. So, third time out with the LEGEND. Went to a several acre field used for parking during public events. This area is adjacent to Civil War earthworks used back in the day to guard a railway depot. I figured I'd go try to find some coinage or maybe jewelry. I'm set up to find junk. I get to cruising around, nothing exciting, and I get a nice solid tone in the high-40's, so I dig. I got down to around 7" or so and I notice a fire-ash burn line. My pointer is chirping away but I've got to go deeper. I'm sifting through the dirt and I find a dirty small round orb. Then I find another! And then a third!!! I'm thinking I found an old burn pit where soldiers melted lead to make mini-balls. SCORE!!! I get home and soak them in soapy water for a bit and the clean up is not going very well at all. Lot's of rusty looking stuff...I'm thinking this just isn't right!! I grab a magnet off of the fridge and BAM! My mini-balls turn out to be steel ball-bearings. What an emotional roller coaster!!! It amazes me that so much "stuff" is buried underneath the Earth's surface. How or why in the heck was a burn pit located there with ball-bearings in it? We will never know...
  3. So…my second day with the Legend. Decided to go down to a seasonal creek on my property that the 1/4 mile driveway to my residence passes over. I have to set the scene…Now when I purchased this place in 2011, this creek area was in a condition that I would describe as the Wilds of Alabama. One couldn’t actually see the creek on either side due to the overgrowth of vegetation. Nasty place…briars, gotcha-vines, poisonous this and that to include Jake. The one good thing is this area has the best soil on my 35 acres. Over one springtime I cleared it all out, and using decent sized limestone rocks from the property constructed two opposing “levees” about 20’ apart, and a dam approximately 3’ high at the most eastern end. I planted a bunch of ground cover, and some crab apple trees, and put in a bench. The whole babbling brook area is about 100’ in length. So, keeping my find ANY junk settings, I start swinging away. My first find was a nice piece of wire. It looked like a bread wrapper without the plastic covering. Not one to become discouraged so quickly I start swinging away again and I get a hit showing 52 and a nice clear tone. I dig me a hole in some nice soft loamy soil, flip the lid over, and stuff my pinpointer into the abyss. A solid tone with continuous vibration. And there it is…CHA CHING! A beautiful 2017 Frederick Douglas quarter! I snap a pic and send it to Commander in Chief. How does she respond? ‘Wow! Great Job Honey!”, or “Awesome!”. Nope…her motivational response was simply “2017”. Now that’s a ball buster huh? 🤣😂🤣 In one spot I also found several coke cans, a spam can, some glass jars, a piece of nylon rope, and a leather boot. I kinda got concerned for a bit when I found the piece of rope and boot, but I didn’t smell anything rotten. The last item I pulled out of this trash dump was a car shock absorber… I was unable to ascertain make or model. Tomorrow is a new day! Be Safe!
  4. One thing I forgot to do was the Ground Balance. I will mess with that tomorrow.
  5. I received my Legend and some other accessories for it a few days ago. I put it all together and did the update to 1.11 this morning. Decided to go searching for everything/anything so I set the search mode to field, set the frequency to M2, and selected A for the discrimination pattern. I have 35 acres of reclaimed coal strip mining. I hit my front yard (I have 3 acres fenced in with 6’ chainlink surrounding my home). I dinked around for about 30 minutes and found junk. But it was so cool to do so! My female Chesapeake was by my side the entire time…”helping” by poking her nose into the holes I dug. 🤣 It was such a cool feeling to find a freaking 1” long rusted wood screw buried 3” below the surface. I mean talk about the proverbial “needle in the haystack”! The can top I found is stamped with “Dispose of Properly”. 😂😂😂 I don’t have anything to compare the Legend against, but I’m extremely satisfied with this purchase. Sooo many setup options…I’m just gonna stick with the very basics for a bit that’s for sure! Y’all be safe!
  6. New Guy questions…I’m sure these ? have been asked before. I did a quick search but didn’t really look that hard so beat me up if necessary. So I’m looking at the Pro Max and the Manticore. I’m gonna be searching for anything that makes a noise on land and in water. Is one better than the other regarding capability, warranty, customer service, accessories, etc. Also, regarding system updates…are they downloaded via computer and installed via USB? Or does the unit have to be sent in for updates? Or is what you buy is it and updates are in new production units only? Thanks for your assistance! Be Safe!
  7. New searcher here from Fabius, Alabama (NE corner of Alabama, on top of Sand Mountain). I own 35 acres and I have access to several large plots of private land as well. I’m a disabled military veteran & completely new to metal detecting. I’m excited about my newest hobby and am planning to purchase a Garrett Pro Max within the next week or so. I’m mostly interested in searching for American Civil War relics, but I’m sure I’ll put hours in at public places looking for whatever. Pictured is a small section of an old rock wall that runs parallel to a seasonal creek. I’m guessing it was created to use for livestock containment as I don’t see any other purpose considering its location (where two forested hillsides merge to form the seasonal creek). I’m gonna check it out in the fall after the snakes have gone underground! So, until I graduate from my metal detecting preschool status, I’ll spend most of my time here in the forum lurking in the background trying to absorb as much information as possible. Good luck swinging and please be safe out there!
