  1. I've noticed the same thing with deep copper pennies and also dimes and quarters.  To me that is a good thing.  I remember a few times when I knew it was going to be a deep quarter but it turned out to be a deep dime.  But, I'm good with up averaging with depth.  I'm very happy with my Equinox.

Well, after reading about the high number war nickels I finally got one at an old fairground in Kansas. Hits a solid 21.I was sure surprised to see a nickel in the hole. It's a 1943 s.

This is so interesting, I had to look through my war nickels and find a 43 S and test on my Equinox.

Most of the war nickels I've found were located and dug with other detectors, with only a few found recently with my Equinox.  Well anyway, my Equinox ID the nickel at 15.  All my other war nickels were 12-13.  Interesting, I may need to rethink all the 14-15 ID's I've passed by especially at the older school locations.  I also looked up the war nickel information in the Red Book and there is no mention of changing the composition from Copper 56%, Silver 35% and manganese 9%.

your Equinox shaft and coil look spotless aside from the depth marks. Mine looks like it has been dipped in a mud bath or painted with earth colored spray paint. I can't remember the last time the lower part of my Nox looked that clean even after cleaning it!

Thanks for the compliment.  I try to clean the entire detector at least every other hunt.  Of course I don't do the same kind of hunting as in Colorado.

I like the tic marks on the shaft.  But what do you mean by the above statement - are you talking about the noise cancel channel setting or sensitivity - i.e., what are you "adjusting"?

Generally I like to have my sensitivity at 22, then do a noise cancel.  Set the detector down with the coil, vertical to the ground and check the air distance using a dime.  If I can only get 10" I'll do another noise cancel and see if the noise cancel numbers change, then I do the dime test again.  At times I'll change to different programs to see how things change.  Sometimes it helps and sometimes the noise get much worse.

I will add, I don't always check the dime because I'm going to hunt either way.  All this is really strange when I move 50-70' away and all of a sudden I can get 12" on the air test without changing any settings.

  5. This may be worth mentioning.  After performing a noise cancel I generally test the machine to see the approximate air distance.  Using a dime, then EMI is not so bad I can get a good repeatable on the dime at 12".  When I can't get a repeatable beep at 10 I will check the EMI and adjust accordingly.  I know this might not be exactly what you are asking but if EMI is high, you'll loose a lot of depth.   I have two marks on my lower shaft, one at 10 and another at 12".  If I can't get at least a 10" signal I adjust accordingly.  There's been a few locations where nothing helps.

    Just my 2 cents.20200503_152419.thumb.jpg.a7b1fe6125b82f309bfcfcdba407acea.jpg
