  1. Hey Bucko, welcome to detecting and to the forum.  Good suggestions above.  The EMI interference could come from overhead power lines or possibly your cell phone if it is near your detector.  Also, you might try reconnecting the coil cable... which shouldn't matter, but exhausting any odd options.  You know... the classic IT Help Desk troubleshooting response... "reboot the machine".  Also, in the same vein of exhausting all options... give it a quick factory reset.

Good luck, hopefully you can get it to quiet down.  ~Tim.

Those look familiar -- meaning I've found some too, but I don't remember which site (likely one of two).  Also, I didn't know what they were other than figuring they had something to do with construction, based upon where I found them.  So good on you for figuring out their usage.  I vaguely recall the shank having a 90 degree bend.  Does that ring a bell?  The shank on yours appears to have been straightened.

From what I recall, the tacks actually fit on the roof flat side down, and the peg stands upright, to lock in the overlapping roof tile.  I think the bend is to "crimp" them down after the peg goes through the hole on the tile.  I have found some ripped tiles around that area too... and as I mentioned on that lid thing... due to the age of the building that was there.... the tiles are most likely asbestos.  The ones that I have found (each one more disappointing than the last... haha.) have varying degrees of bends... some at 90 as you suggested.  Probably depends on how much attention to detail the roofer had when installing them.

Upper right looks like copper wire.  I find that a lot.  (But photos can fool.)

Yes, definitely copper wire, not.much you can do about that, especially at depth and coiled... that one sounded pretty sweet.  I just threw it in the picture.  Not iron for sure.

What is that piece next to the quarter, some kind of weed eater head?  Looks pretty scary if it rotates!

That is some kind of lid I think.  It says "do not re-use" and "safety guard required" around the edge, and the mesh appears to be reinforcement to the part of the lid that has been broken away.  I haven't handled it much, as I think it may be asbestos mesh.  But no clue what it was in its original life.

  4. This is a great thread, and I am reading it intently.  The old site near my home is a mix of modern aluminum trash at more shallow depths, and old iron at deeper locations.  Running F2+0 this past weekend, here are a few of the high tone "iffy" signals I dug (clad quarter added for size reference).  I didn't try increasing the F2 reading as outlined above and in Steve's thread/video... but will do some testing along those line next weekend.  I was hoping for a surprise deep silver.. but instead... deep iron... all at 10"+.

So I'm torn... in one case... passing these signals up as iron would be nice (and especially on Chase's comments that he hasn't yet been surprised by an iron false being a coin - if I am reading his comment correctly - and even if they exist, they are rare).  But on the other hand... I could see how a nearby coin would be completely over-shadowed by iron of this size (and rust) at those depths... so passing on the iron might completely mask a smaller high conductive target at similar or more depth.

Technically, I'm not anywhere near where you Chase, or you GBA are... but your comments - as well as all the comments on the linked post started by Steve... while drinking from a firehose in some cases... some of the "water" is getting in.... if nothing else, by sheer force.  ;).

Thanks for the detailed and on-going education!

    Tim.

If you do, you're going to make several of us CA guys sick.   We're going to come plant a GPS device on your vehicle.   (Pay no attention to the suspicious person you saw in your driveway last night ! 😝 )

Tom, you say that like you and the rest of the CA hunters aren't already sick...haha.  Not to mention the rest of us non-CA guys.

I think we may need to start talking guys off the ledge if Chris comes back with Part 5... (by the way... based on the progression... no doubt you will Chris!!).  I will ask Steve H. to add a "support hotline" forum on DP!  😆

  6. I'm out of descriptive words Chris.  Ok... how about this one... Phenomenal.  Value aside (up to $7K?😲), that California gold coin may be one of the coolest things I've ever seen come out of the ground - and it appears to be in incredible condition... very defined detail from what the picture shows.  I think I would be taking a vacation from work, and camping out at this site you have.  Thanks for letting us all live vicariously through your finds.  ~Tim

  7. Update on my Quest.  I spend a few hours this morning at the old school grounds, and after finding a few more Wheats (50's), I was fortunate enough to make a Quest find.

I pulled two bent nails on my way down, but finally made it about 10" down to the target...

Pretty crusty, not able to make out a date... but a buffalo.

I recall that there were several people here who were looking for the TRX pinpointer and not finding them in stock anywhere. I was just looking at the Centreville Electronics website and they have them listed in stock for $199 with 2 year warranty. I was able to add one to my cart so it appears real.

    Cheers

Thanks GeoBill,  I placed an order... we will see if the "in stock" shown is true.  Tim.

  9. Have you tried detuning the Garrett when going after a target?  As you approach a target and it is throwing off a strong signal in maximum sens (solid tone while still a distance away), press the button again and it will lower the sensitivity allowing you to better pinpoint the target.  The pointer will reset to max sens when you turn it off and back on (or whatever setting you set it to).  I believe you can de-tune it a few times, narrowing the detect field each time.

Not a perfect solutions, but a couple more options that may help.

  10. I am on board with the comments above...  in my opinion there is a difference between someone losing family heirlooms during their untimely and unfortunate passing, and a grave site that family heirlooms are put to rest with their owners with purpose.  Having said that, I may consider reaching out through the police department to over communicate your purest of intentions, which may lead to permission from the family.  A similar undertaking may have already been done with coordination from the police department and you would potentially find out about that as well.

Personally, I would be grateful if someone returned a loved ones belongings, but as we know, different people have different reactions.  Good luck, and I hope you are able to reunite any lost items with the family.

    ~Tim
