The pinpointer on the Equinox is a huge disappointment. Learn how to pinpoint with the Horseshoe mode and stop all your headaches.
I use both the "pull back" method and the pinpointer.. Sometimes the pinpointer will be silent over the target, if you press the button on top of the target (as GBA mentions), so starting to the side of the intended target as GBA states... helps. I sometimes get a "muffled" signal... but a quick pinpoint off, pinpoint on button press brings back the full volume. I have also noticed that sometimes coming out of pinpoint mode will "confuse" (for lack of a better way to say it) the Equinox, and the TID readings won't show with the tones. Again, just a few button presses of the pinpoint and all resets. Just some quirks that I quickly cycle through now that I know how to resolve them quickly. I have found the pinpoint is very well centered to my coil/rod, so it is a useful tool for me. The one caveat would be chasing bent iron... which has a tendency to throw the pinpoint away from the target... in those cases, when I have a nice solid pinpoint, then find myself chasing a signal off to the side of the hole... especially when deep... I can pretty much expect bent old rusty iron. I should mention, I have been surprised a time or two to find a coin on edge doing that same thing... but more often... bent nail.

That is the beauty of the probe - and any coil for the FBS machines... they are interchangeable between the Etrac, all Explorers, and Safari's. I sold my Etrac with the probe a few years back (still not sure why)... and just bought a probe for my Explorer... heavy... yes... but even with the Equinox in the #1 slot... still a lot of fun to swing (had my Explorer II with probe out today and found a Tiffany Silver Pendant :)). I would say the probes are still in the $200+ range in value to someone looking for one. Just my thoughts ~Tim

Thanks Dan, great first report on an "in the wild" hunt. Good to hear that the 15" was handling the small lower conductors without much problem. Looks like a fun spot to detect as well!! Keep the reports coming as you have time. ~Tim.

I would choose the beat to death site... with one caveat... time enough alone on that site to fully learn the best detector made, so I can fully uncover the hidden treasures. I would much rather have that than shooting the proverbial fish in a barrel.
And I guess now that I think about it... The 'best detector' part of the equation is optional... just a beat to death site all to myself... And a solid detector. ~Tim.

Exactly... GBA. This is the essence of where my detecting is right now. The alternative is to dig everything over a 9. Unfortunately my IHP collection wouldn't make a good statistical sample. But I'm willing to purchase sample size of them in the name of science. ~Tim.

I do think ground conditions could alter the TID, so it would make sense that the different modes, with their individual secret sauce of custom frequency mixes and such .. could and probably do have a similar impact. When I finally find my next IHP (it has been a bit of a dry spell for me) I will be able to speak better about it. I may be trying to convince myself that the ID is lower than 20 since I haven't dug any at 20 in recent memory. And just to add relevance to your comment GBA... I would have been running Field 2 when I found my last one, so that may have been why I recall it giving me a TID below 20.
Sometimes it feels like raking water. 😉

Thanks... That is helpful. I have Tect-O-Trak, but I am usually too dirty to navigate my phone screen mid-hunt. haha. I need to be better about utilizing the tool to track. My IHP's seem to have come in below 20, but @GB_Amateursaid essentially the same as you... most come in around 20. I have a site that I'm trying to target IHP's and I'm never sure how low to mentally disc when I'm hunting... but basically I let the depth make the decision for me. I have a nice collection of rusty iron as a result. 🙂

I have been so tempted to pick one up.. but have been a bit intimidated by the adjustability of the programming. I have spent time with others who used the V3i and they killed with them... but they were speaking a whole different language with their machine than I was with mine at the time... still tempted...

I spent about 1.5 hours at the old school near my house using the 6" in Gold 1, multi, disc at 9 and below, sens 22 (ground was pretty quiet tonight, and started in recovery 8... but I felt like I was getting only threshold on anything past 6"... and at this site... anything between the ground and 6" is modern trash. After digging a fair amount of can slaw, pull tabs and ring pulls, I dialed recovery back to 4. I started hearing some more faint targets... not a bunch, but a few... I was going pretty sloooooow with my swings. Anyway, I had a screamer of a 15 tone (a couple of inches down) and just off from it I was getting a more faint 12-13. Pin pointed a hot target at the spot of the 15... and a softer pinpoint where I heard the faint signal. So I cleared the ring pull out of the way, and focused in on the faint 12-13 signal... it was there... so I switched over to Park 1 to test it out... I have Park 1 set in 50 tone, wide open, and I was getting some iron tones around it, along with a bouncy 12 and 13. Still faint. Dug what has to be the crusty-est nickel I have ever dug. You can barely make out the outline of the face on the front, and maybe one of the legs of the buffalo on the back. It was at about 7" - dead center of my plug. Not sure I would have stopped on that in Park or Field... especially with that ring pull screaming right next to it. But at least in this case, Gold 1 did let me know there were two targets there. Or maybe the 6" let me know. Hard to tell. That was my only "keeper" of the hunt... though I did find a clad dime at about 6" where it no way should have been. I was in recovery 8 at the time... so maybe the quick recovery helped me find that one where it was masked before... thanks Badger!
After a couple turf hunts in Gold 1... I can say... I'm not mad at it.

The last one not-withstanding (it was a 12-13) but I have found many of my War nickels in that 14-15 range... probably also gave me some 13 in with it... but I definitely not locked in at 12-13. So that is another reason I dig the upper fringe when I'm nickel hunting. Out of the ground....12-13... but in the ground, I have found a range of tones for War Nicks.
