It's more like my KFC addiction, I can't get enough of fried chicken or gold hunting ?

My dry spell is bound to end soon, hopefully this coming week.  I haven't been detecting near as much as I'd like to, life gets in the way sometimes, so does the weather.  I had a chance today to go but it looks like the weather isn't playing ball and snow forecast tomorrow and the next day so that's out too. After reading this post about finding gold in a creek I was so desperate to go I was thinking of hitting the creek I had my big win as it's the closest place for me to get to for an afternoon detect today but I don't know if it will happen, the Monster isn't waterproof if it buckets down rain and the Nox coil is too darn big so at the moment my twitching continues.

Welcome to the forum PG-Prospecting, you're lucky to have access to a private area of land that has gold, that creek looks like it's dying to get a bit of sluice action. The Nox is great for getting those tiny little bits of gold other detectors like your 4800 can't or struggle to get.  It's a nice little bit you got there too.

    Simon,

Why don't, you put plastic food wrapping film and a clear plastic silicone or plastic bag around the Monster, this will keep your Monster nice and dry. Don't let the rain stop you!

  2. Steve H,

Can you tell me, if it  possible just to order the Pod of the Equinox 800 from Minelab so I can make my own unit to my own specification? ( naturally after the preorder time is finished ). My understanding is that Minelab also sells the Pods for their detectors on order separately. Want to know if this is also possible for the NOx 800 detectors.

    Thanks

Whitbey, the outlet for QED in Australia is Detech Australia. Your search engine will soon turn that up for you, and the price in Australian dollars is $1,850. The exchange rate at the moment I think is probably around one Australian dollar equals 75 US cents, so that would mean a QED would cost less than US$1,400. You will find Pete at Detech a very helpful guy who knows his stuff.

If I can be of any further help please let me know.

Thank you for this information, a very interesting light weight PI gold detector, I will be watching it closely!

Lanny, there is a super light weight PI built here in Australia, at a good price. I use one and love it. Unfortunately it is not yet available in the USA. It is called the QED. It is being constantly improved by the dedicated inventor. Hope one day you will be able to get one.

    Hi Reg Wilson,

Can you tell how much the price is of the QED in US dollars, and where/how I can order a QED PI detector in Australia from over seas.

Would appreciate it, if you can give me a link to their website!

    Thanks in advance

  5. Hi Condor,

Wow! Nice small gold nuggets you found with the NOX , keep us posted on your other finds and the settings you are using.

BTW, what high end EarBuds are you using with the Equinox, yours seam's to be working well!

PS Thanks for your posts, and to keep us informed on finding gold nuggets in the desert.

Phrunt, nice gold! I don't think I saw that picture before, maybe it just didn't load. I have high hopes for the Equinox down there to find me a couple little guys like that and that picture proves yet again it can do it! I went one day with my father-in-law and we were panning in a river, rio chiquito, above where an old mine was and I got down to black sand but there was no gold. I had never panned before but I watched some videos and thought I'd try it out. We took an old aluminum pot that was shaped like a gold pan from my mother-in-law and used that. I do swear though that at one point I had the pot full of rocks and sand and I saw a piece of quartz with a little bit of gold in it...right as it was falling out of the pan and back into the river and then it was gone.

Whitbey, I've heard only great things about Osa. My wife went there on a school trip, she studied eco-tourism. The closest I've been to there is Golfito but it's on my list of places to go when we're settled in. I was talking to her the other day and told her I wanted to get the equinox to bring down there to use on the beaches and rivers for jewelry hunting and she rolled her eyes at me. Then I asked her to tell me how many people she's ever seen there detecting, her answer was no one.

I haven't checked to see about a Minelab dealer there and that might be a problem so I'll get on that right away!!

Lunk, I've stumbled across his videos and I've liked what I saw. I'll get to watching more now that you reminded me! Thanks everyone

    Hi DukeBoxer,

It won' t be a problem if there is no Minelab dealer, just get yourself a good external battery power source which you plug in the NOX,it charges the detector during detecting, and can be used even if the NOX battery kicks the bucket in the future. If the NOX battery is in good shape it should give you 4 years of pleasure with the NOX, it is just like the cell your cell phone battery, but you never know with batteries, Minelab gives a one year warranty on the battery and 3 years on the control box and coil.

Do a search on this forum of NOX battery, and backup batteries which are also used to charge your cell phone in the field! There are some good articles discussing this on the forum, and for the external battery backup get yourself a good one and not the very cheap ones, you need a battery backup with 5.1 Volt and 2 A or 2.1 A of out put, to keep the NOX running fully functional !, the lower outputs don't work very well it seam's.

Also just an idea for you, I am going to do this  myself when I am going to Osa, since the high humidity and the tropical rains in Costa Rica and the jungle conditions, I like to use the water proof submersible detectors like the NOX, and there is also a good one coming out in May or June this year it is the Makro Gold Kruzer, and water proof till 6 meters/yards this is my backup detector I am going to get for Osa prospecting, would be good for the jungle conditions and humidity and good for underwater use as the NOX.

I know the area you are going to live in is much dryer then Osa, but you have to be prepared for tropical conditions, It is maybe a good idea to also get yourself a second waterproof detector like the new Makro Gold Kruzer also very sensitive on small gold, with it's 61 KHz, you can read the specs. On their website or on this forum if you go to the Nokta/Makro detector section.

Hope this is helpful for your Costa Rica gold prospecting endeavor in the near future! And get your Ass out their quickly and join your family and daughters in Costa Rica! ( LIVE LIFE, FOR LIFE START LIVING YOU )

I'm moving to Costa Rica soon and I want to bring an Equinox 800 with me to detect down there. I've been all over the place on what detector I want to bring and I decided on the Equinox 800 since it covers all the areas I'd like to use it. The hundreds of beaches on the coast because it's silent in wet salt and waterproof, little swimming holes and rivers because it's waterproof, in fields just to see what I can dig up and also on and around old mining grounds to check the spoils piles and see if anything was left behind. This is the reason I would like to see videos on gold detecting with the Equinox since I've watched videos about almost everything else, park, beach, and field. If anyone could point me to some it would be awesome! I was hoping to see some videos from people in australia but I can't really find anything. Maybe I'm not searching correctly

I have an AT Pro which I will probably give to my cousin and detecting partner when I leave because I have started using the Tesoro Mojave and the Compadre and I have really jived with it. I will bring those two down with me also but since they aren't waterproof I think the Equinox would suit me well.

Just a little background, my wife is from there and we've been slowly building a house down there for probably the last 10 years. It's done now and her and my 2 girls are living there and just waiting for me to get my butt down there. We live in the northeast province of Guanacaste near the town of Tilaran. Around there, there have been mines near Rio Chiquito and Abangares and there is a place called Campos de Oro, or Gold Fields near these mines. I'd like to take the equinox to rivers and try to do a little detecting and panning for gold in those areas. Thanks!

Nice place to go to Costa Rica, plan myself to go to Costa Rica in a few years from now, but go to the Osa Peninsula lots of gold and nuggets in Osa.The Equinox is a good choice, but keep in mind of the rechargeable battery, if it kicks the bucket in the future, you will have problems having it repaired ! ( don't, think there are any service centers in Costa Rica to replace your battery) .Make sure you get a good power back up to run your NOX 800 incase this happens! And get a spare internal battery as a safety backup so you can go in Costa Rica to a tech.shop and have it replaced!

Not sure they have a Minelab dealer in Costa Rica, I thought the main importer is in Panama, to be sure contact Minelab and ask them if they have a dealer or service center in Costa Rica or the nearest one in Middle America! Or when you have problems in the future you can always ship it back to the US service center, this will cost you off course.

Let us know how you are doing with your prospecting for gold in Sunny Costa Rica! And make us some pics and vids. As you probably know metal detecting is a loud by law in Costa Rica also panning and sluicing for gold, but no motorized equipment, not even electric or battery operated are aloud

In Costa Rica. Local Government is very strict about it, and have stopped all mining in the country,  they want to protect their nature, since eco tourism this in their main source of income !

My buddy (who is still alive) was out using the NOX on Private Property last week and all was good.  Then he gets a signal.. is bent over digging for treasures and not paying much attention around him.  Next thing you know... he is looking down the barrel of a DBL Barrel Shotgun.  What would you do?

    1) Drop to your knees

    2) Piss yourself

    3) Run home

    4) Call the Police

    5) Thank the Lord

    6) All of the above

    Your answers please???

    Show him my police badge!

    Hi Kiwijw,

I am second in line after you! But I still will be the first to get the book!  As soon as Steve H.book comes out it will take more time to get to you in New Zealand! Since I live in the USA I will have the book in hand first! So you see you can be first, and still end up second place!???

THE COMPLETE UNABRIDGED ZIP ZIP by LARRY SALLEE

I found a copy on Youtube. If you pause the video you can read it. Otherwise it would be hard to find a copy less than $150.00 on Amazon.

    Wow!! Talking about SPEED READING.

    Hi Steve H,

Yes Steve when can we see your first practical field guide coming out, on how to find gold nuggets? Would be a good project for the cold winter days, and you knowing you probably will be a famous author!!

P.S. And Steve can we already start pre ordering your first book!??? (just joking about the pre order thing, since after the NOX we live in the age of pre order!) But I am serious about the book writing, would very educational and uplifting to have a Steve H. Field guide in hand!
