I'm confused in more ways than one (kinda typical for me...).  What are you showing in the picture?  What 'tape' are you talking about?  When you say "same EMI outcome", same as what?  Thanks (in advance) for clearing up my confusion.

Please go to my fist post [I am the OP].

In the picture is a cage built out of aluminum tape. Some of is unpeeled [not sticky] several layers to give it stability.

I'm looking forward to the flagship Multi-IQ machine. I've sold off my CTX, Etrac and have the Nox on hand along with an Explorer 2. I had 3 Nox's replaced within the first 2 1/2 years. and I hope Minelab has learned a few things from all the issues with the Nox. I'll be in line for the next offering from Minelab

Are things not clear that Minelab is only releasing gold machines this year?  What am I missing??/

Also with a 6 month build-up to the release of the Equinox and now with zero build-up, minelab is going to dump a surprise machine on us.

    UGH, just not their MO.

  3. One source who was on scene tells Arundel.news the man may have been wading offshore to search for items with a metal detector when the cold water likely caused hypothermia. The man was not able to return to the shore on his own.

Well my kids got me the 15" for Christmas and I took it out to my favorite park today and it was great! I have a counter weighted carbon fiber shaft from SteveG and I just slapped the 15" on and off I went.

GOTTA love a gift one can actually use!!!!

My buddies use the 6" and stock 11 mostly. One has the 13x15 but depth isn't that much different and is heavy for him so he uses a bungie on it. He likes it to cover big ground like fields.

I would think you would get more use out of the 6"

Being on a beach or river it sounds like you would not have a location where target saturation is a problem. The 6" coils would excel in a target saturation environment. But in all reality the Nox 11" coil is an awesome separator of targets. I just don't see money well spent on another coil. However that money could be used for a nice graphite shaft, coil and screen protector. A decent arm cuff too!!!!   Dave

Thats the NOX's problem.  Overprocessed.  Would be an insane first machine to learn.  Can't tell the flyspecks from the garbage can lids.

Well I thought it was me that was unable to tell target size with the Nox!!!!!

However I do work in one tone and with one tone I do have confidence in small targets sometimes.

But tell the difference between a dime and a silver dollar. Forget it!  Thanks Clive!

What really makes the difference with the Excalibur's ...are the head phones. You get a good set of head phones on there and "You know what to listen for In PP"

A quality set of headphones to keep outside sounds out IS A MUST at the beach.  For beach use with the Sovereign GT I use the Black Widows.  I also use the same Black Widows with the Equinox.

Is everyone who’s posting in this thread still using a wireless (Bluetooth/Wifi Stream) connection to their detector pods?? Yes, lots of external EMI is picked up by our detector’s coils,  but aside from wrapping your detector pod in a foil hat (this is something very new to me), the best thing a treasure hunter can do to incur less EMI is to utilize a headphone audio cable to their pod....Gotta minimize the unnecessary transmit/receive

I never used the wireless on my Nox. Hard wired from the start. Call me old school...................

So is it the boards arent grounded?   I wouldnt think the box would pick up much EMI.  Most of the EMI should be comes from the coil.

Well in 8 hours of use I lost all of my EMI on this beach with the foil in place. Working on a more permanent fix.

I am 100% sure this EMI is from communications equipment. Would like to hear from someone who try's this on overhead power lines

Now there's product waiting to be marketed. The idea just needs to be incorporated into a fabric cover.

I've been saying this works for some time, glad someone finally tried it and yes it works even better when connected to the ground like Pimento points out.

So I ran the Alum Foil again today. No EMI from cell phones. In fact I had my friend sweep his cell within 5 inches all around the detector and no EMI pulses. ?

  11. So I thought nothing ventured nothing gained. I have about three blocks of beach where the EMI forces me to turn the sensitivity down to 20. Also sick of hearing all the cell phones coming at me from 20 feet away so......It was not pretty.

Did not know what to expect. I WAS FLOORED!  Not only did I not hear cell phones any more, my EMI issue completely disappeared. I was able to run a solid 22 sensitivity and even 23 with water contact. On the wet sand [no water contact] I ran 24 all the way back. I have NEVER been able to run at 24 on this beach.  Your mileage may very, but I will be out with this again today.

    Midlake,

Great job! Hope they both hold up well!

Did you make the handle yourself, or buy as is? Also, did you move the pod back, or where you able to leave it in place? ??

    Hi Joe

The grip is purchased. It is an add-on grip for bicycle handle bars. I then add a foam grip to it. Also the top needs a piece of hardwood pinned into it so the plastic washer can be put on top.

My rod is a custom straight rod, so I just put the pod where I like it.

This is now coil #2 to break on me! I guess knocking on wood, and crossing fingers had little effect!

    6 hours ago, FloridaSon said:

Caused by tightening the coil bolt to the point it flexes the ears leading to breakage at a common weak point. That weak point may be caused by the ear being to thin and/or the colder plastic flow when casting the part.

Here's an example of cracking on the weak point in the moulding, this one from a UK beach hunter.

So I have a total of 5 hunts about 20 hours of time on my coil solution. Again, a [solid] plastic coil stiffener is epoxied to the coil. Then a plastic side plate is added to both sides. Each coil ear is now 1/2" thick!  Let you guys know when I have 500 hours on it. I have also removed the two center coil supports for weight savings and water drag.

If you guys want to fiddle and experiment try maybe just a single copper wire and simply tape it on top so it does not wiggle or move. Any movement will cause the machine to go out of balance and sound off.

Curious what others come up with.

What are your thoughts on EMI liquid products that are non-metallic??

    Graphite is one? Others?

  15. 5 hours ago, CPT_GhostLight said:

but covering the coil with it would reduce or disable your coil's ability to function.

What about a layer of EMI coating on the coil except for the part facing down?

How would this effect coil performance?

  16. 8 hours ago, Tom Slick said:

EMI can, and does affect both the control box and the coil.

    4 hours ago, GB_Amateur said:

That's certainly evidence and thanks for providing it.

    4 hours ago, Badger-NH said:

s far as I know, you can't have it both ways.

I guess the reason is:  Has anyone tried an EMI Bag over their detector or one of the multiple EMI reducing products on the coil?

How can I prevent my headphone jack from further corrosion?

    A little back story.

I'm submerging my equinox 800 about 2-3 times per week in saltwater (Florida gulf coast).

Purchased the LS PELSO headphones October 11th (1 week shipping) and as you can see they have already started to corrode.

I don't take the headphones out and wash the jack EVERYTIME. (Trying to avoid this)

Please leave a comment, let me know what you do, and what you think will work for me!

    Thanks

I just got back to my machine yesterday. Even after washing everything and putting spray on it. Mine has some corrosion too.

I think there is zinc in that connector! ?
