The flexibility that you are provided in setting up the 600 and 800 as compared to the Apex you have now (adjustable recovery speed, 2 adjustable iron falsing filters, adjustable ferrous and non-ferrous tone breaks, and multiple MF profiles vs. just 2 on the Apex - none of which are available on Apex), plus the single frequency capabilities of the Equinox, similar to what is provided on the Apex mean that with proper setup you are not "forced" to dig small non-ferrous with Equinox and likely have more versatility than Apex.  I dig in Culpeper too, have had success with the Equinox there (more success with the Deus, though) so I am scratching my head on this statement, George.  I know you are also making comparisons to the Tarsacci, of which I have no first hand experience, but that is not my point.  My point is that you now own an Apex that is very similar but has less setup versatility than the Equinox, yet your issues with the Equinox could have easily been addressed with the appropriate setup.  How long did you have the Equinox?  Thanks.

I did not buy an Apex to use in Culpeper. I used the Equinox long enough to know it had limited abilities in Basalt and Diode rock. If I ever go up that way I use a GB Pi. I used it mostly on colonial iron sites. I'm not interested in digging low conductive metal to find something good with a similarTID number. Ponderous. I have sonic hearing.

Good luck with your selection. Maybe we passed each other one day in the field.

It has limited depth performance in my ground. My GB came in at 90. Pure ferrite GB at 95. All detectors work here. Some better than others. The FBS, BBS, suffer the most. The Vanquish falsed and responded to the bedrock with good Visual numbers. The bedrock is very magnetic iron based. If you place a non-ferrous object on some rock it turns your signal to ferrous. This is why a ground balanced PI works. With this one I will hunt the milder soil. I did not purchase the Apex based solely on MF or to use in extreme minerals.. I prefere the single frequency options unlike the Vanquish.

    Hey George,

    Quick question or four,

How bad is your soil, and which detectors do you use most in it?? No multi works in it well??

I was looking at you list of detectors used in your profile, and didn't see an EQ 600 or 800 in there! Any reason??  And how well is the Tarsacci working out for you, vs it's price point??

    A little off topic; i know!! Thanks!!👍👍

My soil in places is some of the worst . I live south of Culpeper Va. Both Multi and VLF have limited depth capability. I tested both the 600 and 800 in a more milder ground. I did not care to have to dig  small non-ferrous which your kinda of forced to. I use a Tarsacci now. It will not be for most detectorist's. A keene ear is needed to  understand the sounds. Having the ability to not only do a standard ground balance and then to be able to balance the salinity in the soil is a big factor for me hunting pastures with livestock whose urine will cause issues. You must also understand the balance between the threshold and sensitivity adjustment.

Like a signal balance control on an early Whites or on the Fisher Coinstrike. It's still a work in progress and it's true potential is still unknown.  I would not recomend any detector. But if your the curios type, and don't mind the cost, it's fun to use.

Are you saying you have tried the Apex in MF in your ground and it does not perform? Or that you are making that assumption based on other machines?

Good to hear about the recovery speed. 👍🏻

  5. I had no issue testing the recovery speed. Hunting in the relic program with a minnie next to a large square nail I found it interesting when I turned down  the iron audio to zero I would get a good one way tone . Good target next to iron. Since I already know MF does not work in my evil red dirt it will be fun to see what the single frequencies do.

To your recollection, what was the depth on a coin-sized target that that Metrotech was capable of ?

And did you do parks and schools turf in those days ?  Or strictly relicky pursuits ?  (eg. : CW, cellar holes, etc...) ?   I've heard of some other early hobbyists in the states in and around VA that also started in the 1960s with Metrotech.  But it seems they were primarily CW type pursuits, not turf or yards in regular coin-hunting.   So do-tell:  What type sites were you hunting in 1969 ?

    Tom,

I hunted DC and Baltimore Parks back then. The Metrotech 220A I had was hotter on low conductors. Gold rings you could get maybe 4inches. A little less on silver coins. But both DC and Baltimore parks were Training and Camp grounds at the beginning of the War. I would find Minnie balls between the sidewalk and curb in certain parts of DC.

Hello all, new member here. I recently got a Rutus Alter 71 after using an AT Pro for the past couple yrs. After much research I chose this over the Nox 800 because I can't run with the crowd and after hearing an interview with the developer I was hooked. I wanted a change because my buddy was really cleaning up with his MX Sport and for me as a musician the AT Pro tones annoyed me, particularly the iron grunt gets tiresome.

I will say the AT has been good to but the Alter is another level and I really like it. The sweet sounds and tweakability makes me feel connected to the machine just as a really good guitar seems to become an extension of the music making not just a thing in my hands. The Alter arrived the day after having shoulder surgery which gave a couple of days with the manual and online videos before I gave in an assembled it.The next day I had it in the backyard to get familiar with the menus and such, man oh man it was comfortable to swing and well balanced.I have been out about 5 times with it looking goofy with one arm in a sling but got comfortable with it very quickly and have been hitting finds much quicker and more often.I have a learning curve ahead of me but I feel that this machine is a good platform to learn skills I have been reading about and makes those techniques accessible.

I have questions for anyone familiar with this detector-

1- any headphone recommendations? I am putting together a bluetooth setup but may get wired ones also.

2-I setup a discrimination pattern but it appears to be a global setting, can this be setup as a user program to be recalled ? Any other tips and guidance will be welcome, I really feel good about this detector.

I field teasted version 1 and was very impressed. You made a great choice.

    Tomorrow, 30th July...........

im using the Tarsacci MDT on its first Roman site tomorrow,,

The field has only the headland cut,, (wholecrop silage),, but I can't wait to experiment with the Tarsacci, I will only have a few hours to spare here but really looking forward to this opportunity!

ive been detecting this site since the early nineties,, (Fisher 1265X)  was the first detector I ever used here....(loved that machine),, and numerous other detectors since!

Site has been detected heavily throughout, not just by me , but numerous of other people, so,,, should be an excellent place to see what the Tarsacci can unearth,,,, .. For the record, I detected this site last year and only found about  half a dozen coins,,, in a whole days hunt,, so it will be a great test!

Hopefully some photos of Finds to follow, and a brief summary of how it went!

    regards

    Dave. H

    Fingers crossed. Cheers

Hi George,, and your the first to know,,, the little coin, top row, far right, is indeed a Roman,

it's not the best example, however, it's a Roman coin,

first day out with the Tarsacci , ....... loved it!

    Dave.

    Minium I suppose.
