  1. Never had any problems with curious people, asking a few questions! They get to see some coins, and the trash i collect!  And for kids, if i have any matchbox cars or a decent quarter i've found, i give those away! No biggie!

Now, i have had a few nosy park employees try and run me off! But i am keenly aware of my local rules and i have no problem setting them straight! Usually they don't know there own rules; and slink away!

But you haven't lived, until you have someone at a clothing optional beach walk up and ask a few questions! I feel compelled to show them something (finds!! Not what your thinking!!🤣), since I'm still fully clothed!!

Simon, if you come for a holiday, that's the beach I'll take you to!!😱

    hahaha!!

    Eyes up!! 🙈🤯🤣🤣😂🤣

  2. Hello, and welcome to the forum! Please give us some info about yourself in the meet and greet!👍

I think the Simplex+ will be a significant upgrade to your Harbor Freight detector! You might also consider the Minelab Vanquish, depending on your needs!

But i am curious what the HF  looks like, and what kind of finds you made with it! Was it dig everything? Etc...👍👍

  3. Welcome Larry,

You are a lucky man to have a spouse interested in swinging a detector!  I'm sure you all will meet some great people in the prospecting club, and on this forum! Looks like your in for some fun times, and great finds! Good luck!👍

  4. Nordic,

I only used the 800 headphones when there is cooler weather, or the surf and/or wind is loud! Warmer weather, they make my ears sweat which is very uncomfortable!  And I've also had pairing/ unpairing issues with them!  So i always carry the module and a light foldup pair of  wired earphones with me as the primary, and/or backup!

Also, as long as my cellphone is in my back pocket, is doesn't interfere with the module!  I've found that if i put the module and extra wire in a cellphone arm band; like joggers wear, the wire is out of the way, and does not get hung up like it always does when i have it on a beltloop! Also I'm generally wearing a large sunhat, so regular headphones don't work well! So i use the bottom two!

If i am going to be wearing a pack for extended use away from my vehicle, i also bring a charger, and Nox wires with me!( see bottom pic)!          And drinks, lunch, and TP,  no pics!!🧻🤣

Here are pics of what i use! 🎧👍

  5. Chase and Nordic,

You both are way ahead of me on the 800! Im still in the crawling and standing stage as far as inland sites!  And i value both your opinions and instructions on the Nox!

Pinpoint has not been a big issue to me on any of my detectors, because I've alway used a pinpointer! I've found very tiny stuff with the Nox, and i would be looking way too long without it!

I'm sure with any detector, one can create a situation where the desired object will not be picked up! But i think those are few and far between! But thanks to you guys, and many of the poster's here, those situations are highlighted and delt with!

Here in Florida, I'm more concerned with beach conditions, than coins in a horseshoe🤣 But info like this makes an educated detectorist!

Keep up the good posts, and i will continue to be the apprentice! 👍

  6. Thanks GB,

Yes, some are from you!  And you are on my  "follow" list!🤣

I've been enjoying all the people and information here! And the variety of subjects is great! My interests, and learning has greatly increased!  Steve is doing a great job operating and policing the forum! I don't know how he finds enough hours in the day!🤯

Keep the post's coming, and I'll do the same!👍

  7. Pimento,

That's funny you mention the earthworms! That subject was the original source of my "coin sink" question!  I just didn't mention it in the previous post!

I have a small park near me that was once part of an old graveyard! (Graves removed long ago) It has several very large trees that constantly shed leaves, and the soil is very rich and loamy with tons of earthworms! In this situation its a combination of the leaf breakdown, mulcher mowing, and finally the earthworms that are processing the leaves and grass clippings,  and burying anything that falls on the ground here! To complicate matters, there are large power lines overhead, and a constant homeless element that litters the park with all manner of aluminum trash!

I would call it more of a coin burying, than a coin sinking! But it could be called either one i would guess! I was formerly a sinking advocate until i conversed with the person i referenced above! Now i'm in the burying camp!👍👍

  8. EDITOR'S NOTE: This thread split off from a prior subject on coin detecting here.

I asked someone very knowledgeable about soils and how objects move in and on them! About the "sinking of coins" subject several years ago! And got a very detailed answer!

In a nutshell, coins and other object don't actually "sink" in normal soils:

    *  They can be compressed deeper by natural, or man made forces! (Examples: Foot and/or vehicle traffic; Animal traffic!)

    *  Soils and organic materials build up over time! Or are added by humans, or short term natural events! (Examples: Mowing; Plowing; Natural decomposition of organic plant and animal matter; Wind blown soils; Flooding; Land slides; Etc...)

    *   Ground conditions can very greatly and affect the depth the coins were originally dropped! (Example: An uneven or rocky area that may have been a gathering area before being filled and leveled for a playing field!)

    *  Seismic activity, and/ or liquefaction of soils buy various natural and manmade events!

And there can be multiple, and combined events over a short, or long period of time!

This is by no means comprehensive, and i did not even cover beach conditions and the effects of waves, tides, and currents on coins and other objects,  and their shape and weight factors!🤯🤯

And this was the Short answer!🤣
