Were you disappointed when you discovered the deep coke can, or just figure it was goes with the territory?  Yin and yang experience?

Well, most of my good targets are never that deep.  If that one was in the wet I probably would have stopped or been unable to dig it.  I had already detected wet and nada so this was a target I had to see.  It was a marginal sound at the beginning but sometimes the size of the target tricks you into thinking it is not quite that deep.  This dig began to impress me as I was getting very deep on my handle.

  2. Sometimes targets are deep.  That is the 15" coil and I had 6-7 more inches from the top of the sand to the half can target.

And then there are targets not so deep.  That is the silver ring there with a green heart stone.  It was down 8-9 inches.

  3. I just got back from the coin store and gold seller.  They have been good to me and I've bought a few things from them.  I handed them the chain from across a barrier of door and drop box because of the potential for BLM and Antifa riots and they shot it with an XRF.  It shows nickel and copper.  They showed me the display so I know they are correct.

Those who said it was not the right color were correct.  I should have been more diligent before posting but we sometimes want it to be as labeled.  This analysis confirms to me the Nox numbers of 13-14 when I found it.  I don't know what the real gold numbers would be for a chain that size but probably lower.

    On with the next finds.

  4. What makes you think it is a meteorite rather than an ordinary rock?

What part of the world did you find this?

I have found many meteorites but I had to go to KNOWN meteorite areas in the desert and search diligently with a metal detector.  Most unusual rocks are not meteorites.

Look at this from UCLA Meteorite Lab and tell us which meteorite in the collection most resembles yours.

  5. Don't change your settings too much in an 'effort' to find magical settings.  Get to your destination, set up the detector, get some sample gold targets and get to hear them well.  Keep those settings as you get to learn your terrain.  You can always go back and tweak settings to get more out of the areas you find but you have to find them first.

As good as Jasong is with a detector I consider his superior knowledge to be in geology.

  6. I still have my 5000 but have only used it a couple of times in the last 3 years.  It still works when I work it.  I found my biggest pieces with it.  In some areas it is all you need on under worked patches.

There are many threads here that suggest specific settings for specific spots and you should look those up but you should also consider just staying near the default settings.  I'd also get to know that 8" coil as well as you can.  It is a pretty nifty coil and can find some big gold if it is around too.  It is great on the steep terrain you are showing.

There will be more people chiming in I'm sure.

  7. I have another question besides the weight issue and ergonomics.  Will this machine find 'invisible' nuggets on existing patches?  We 'assume' that most if not all of the gold has been found on many patches these days.  We also know that no one gets it all.  The 5000 was designed to be more quiet relative to the ground and you could pick your coil for coverage and depth.  It succeeded for many in that regard and new nuggets were found.  The GPZ came out with the 40% deeper advertising and it proved with its ZVT to pull out some pretty nice nuggets from hammered patches that were previously invisible.  Minelab has many different other gold detectors such as the 2300, Gold Monster, Equinox 800 that will find tiny shallow nuggets missed and invisible in these same patches.  That does not make the gold taken off of these patches return.  I can now go back to some of our patches and not find any nuggets with an array of these detectors and coils or find so few that it is time to move on.

How will this 6000 fare on finding the invisible nugget?  Will it see specimens as its claim to fame?  Will it have a better audio enhancement on 'good' targets?  Will it make my 18" NF coil do back flips and make my most productive coil ever get put back on a detector?  If it does not fare well then will it be the cat's meow at helping someone find new patches which are getting harder and harder to find with good research.

What in the 'sales proposition' will be offered to make me part with one of my other detectors, money or both?

  8. I've used some diving booties I have while my boots have been out of commission and they 'work' better in the water of course but walking on the beach and with the rocks in some places ... the boots are like a good hiking shoe in the desert.  They protect my feet.

  9. I used the Aquaseal and it bound nicely to the rubber.  The problem is that it cracked in the same place where the flexing happened!

The idea of being 'liquid rubber' like the Flex Seal is good but it won't withstand the bending.

A tape sounds good also and I've tried it but the tape doesn't remain flexible enough vs the boot surface and it pulls away and the leak returns under the tape.

The patching and vulcanization seem to be the last try.  I have a tire store that I use and I'll see if they can put one of their tire patches on it but it will also want to break loose.

Alas I'll be once again disposing of a pair of boots that I could use for years if they didn't crack.

  10. Here is a good article in the Bendigo Advisor about two of the Aussie Gold Hunters on the show.

    https://www.bendigoadvertiser.com.au/story/6879688/bendigo-prospectors-unearth-two-gold-nuggets-on-television-show/

The Poseidon Crew joined the main cast of Aussie Gold Hunters this year.

"It took a bit of convincing to be part of the show," Mr Shannon said. "Most prospectors don't generally like to divulge their finds freely, for obvious reasons.

"What convinced me was to try help raise profile of prospecting in Victoria. We're in a bit of a struggle with regulations and in the industry is gradually being reduced. Hopefully being a part of show, showcases Victoria and what we can produce in terms of gold finds."

GOD, I have found SO MANY chains.   Sometimes one needs to do an acid check! Sometimes the clasps do not comply with the truth!

That 'claw' has me a bit concerned.  I have to do a bit of 'prove up' I guess.

My wife has a 20" 18k chain but it also has some religious ornaments hanging from it.  It weighs much less.

Congratulations on a spectacular find, Mitchell!👍🏼

Over the many years that I posted my finds (beach and turf) across 4 different detecting forums, in addition to viewing thousands of other posters’ pics of their finds, I have developed a “sixth” sense, if you will, of being able to tell  whether a piece of gold/silver looks to be a counterfeit, regardless of its karat stamping...granted, the pic(s) have to be detailed/high quality to be able to tell this, and yours have the “detail”.

I’m praying your necklace is the real McCoy...🙏, but I think you should test its metal content..but only if “you” care to.....I never trust a marking on a piece of jewelry anymore, because I’ve been burned royally by even my own finds...

I have found more than I want to admit, pieces of gold jewelry that were stamped with a karat value, only to test the metal, and it turns out to be a fake piece.  😌  Some details I see on your necklace make me hesitant to immediately want to accept it’s 18k stamping...also a 24” solid 18kt chain of the width of yours would/should be 2-4 times your measured weight...

I’d first hit it with a magnet, then if there’s no magnetism, test it with 18 kt gold acid..Whenever I find a gold piece on a hunt, I usually can’t wait to get home and do a scratch/acid test on my find.

    Cheers, Mitchell!

I share some of your trepidation and would be prepared to post a correction.  I'm uncertain of the weight coming to exactly 1 troy as to be an example of a fake or of the real McCoy.  It is not magnetic.  I found an iron chain a couple of days before and it sounded low and in fact had negative numbers.  It is iron and magnetic.

I normally take this sort of thing to my coin dealer and they shoot it with an XRF so that will be done when they open.

I come back with the 15 and pound it again and find even more little bits and deep coins the 11 misses.

The 15 does go deeper.  I also noticed last night in the chain hunt that the 'fringe detecting' goes outside the coil 5-6 inches on large cans or things so I do get drawn in to a target that way also.

This is actually a continuation of thread of this one but I'm not in training mode any more!  haha
