  1. The Deus is my everyday use machine,it did take a little while and many hours to master, but once the penny drops then its a very adaptable and light machine,i have mine mounted on a Golden Mask 5 shaft and it just finishes the setup off completely !!

Regarding having additional detectors,i currently have 18 of them and 45 coils these cover most of my various site scenarios here in the UK,some are old time classic's that have served me well and i just like using them.

I am out all day tomorrow on a roman villa site and will take about 3 detectors and a few coils just incase, nothing worst than driving some distance and then finding that the only detector that you bought with you has decided too play up,so i always have a few backups.

Is it a addiction ?? they dont have pockets in shrouds and you cannot take it with you,so i enjoy myself to the full while i am alive.

  2. The only new product that wont be on show or not being demonstrated i should say is the new hoard hunter setup as that is still in trial period at the moment, but had thought about going as i use Deus but hate massive big rallies like this,so will just carrying on detecting on my own permissions as usually. The new coil and software does not interest me really if i am honest as the higher freq dont add any advantages for the targets or sites that i detect on ie hammered silver coins etc,the higher freq may be good for Celtic gold staters though lol

  3. The new version software as i understand it be able to operate the earlier coils as i call them ie 9'',11'' and the 13'' coil but only on the 4 current freq's,you will gain a few extra features that can be run on the earlier coils,so a sort of improvement i guess.

But too take full advantage of the new version 4 one would need the new coil, but that that then will only operate at the higher freq from 20khz upto 40khz,i am guess and i am not 100% sure but it may be possible by carrying 2 coils ie the current one and the latest one when released so that by changing them over 'it' may be possible to run the full 8 freq from 4khz - 40Khz.

One has too take into account that its possible that the new software 4 could have a glitch like when version 3 came out,but they addressed the glitch by bringing out 3.1 then the 3.2 version that we all use today.

Some folks here in the UK still use and prefer version 2 which for some folks works much better here in the UK,i am not one of those folks as i find 3.2 does all that i require from the machine, will i update too version 4 ?? i doubt it very much as i dont require a high khz coil as we dont have as such gold nuggets,so whats the point in buying a expensive coil that will never be used on the higher freq, the coil shape if it is elliptical would be welcome but once again i cannot see any justification in doing so.

Like anything new in the detecting arena i personally would not buy anything new for a period of 12 months mainly to see if any design faults appear or software glitches which have happened in recent months. One may in the future buy the new coil just for the size aspect but not for the freq advantages as that would be a total waste of time.

These of course are just my personal opinions and yes i am a Deus user.

  4. I use a Fisher TW-5 which is basically the same as the Gemini 3,they are not your every day detector of course, but i use mine predominantly for pot hoard locating,if i have found say a few coins that have been dragged up by the deep ploughing and these coins are in a tight radius this usually indicates either a purse drop or a scattered hoard.

Then once we have located what we feel is the main concentration then that is when you would use a twin box in my case the TW-5,and as mentioned above the target usually needs to be reasonably large like say a orange size target or bigger, the bigger the target the deeper it will go.Of course its a specialist tool but all it takes is just one pot hoard to pay for itself many times over, also one has too remember that in the UK banks and other forms of safe security was not even thought about nearly 2000 years ago,so everything of value was buried for safe keeping in the ground.Hence one can see why a twin box can be a useful tool to have.

  5. No one detector does it all at the moment, and cannot see any major game changers on the horizon either,my way of thinking is i have basically all the detectors that i need for my detecting scenarios, one of my main buying criteria if and when i am looking for a new detector is never buy a brand new latest model for a minimum of 12 this time duration usually highlights any design faults of which we have seen in the last few years. Will never change from this one and its saved me alot of money, frustration and down time.

The bottom line is a detectoris  just a very expensive lump of plastic/alloy packed with electronic components in side, you take it out the box and install batteries and what does it do by itself ?? nothing,it does not find you anything on its own,so although you have the latest super duper detector with the latest technology inside,it still means absolutely nothing, the best detector makers on the planet can build anything that is total new hybrid operating system and it still means nothing.

So although i have been detecting a good few years here in the UK and have some knowledge,i have been refining my detecting techniques and skills on operating a detector/s,rather than buying and chasing the latest machines, also another 'BIG' area that is very important too me rather than new detectors is research.

Owning the right detector for the job, learning as much about operating the detector/s and research,a experienced detectorist even with a older machine who has many many years operating that machine and his knowledge of the local terrain and the  items that he is seeking is far more important than any new potential new detecting technology that has yet to be invented or produced.

Experience is in my mind more important that something that has not been produced yet,of course these are just my thoughts and personal opinions.

  6. That is a stunning BA find, could be 1000BC or more, unusually that is broken like that ?? if it was sy a votive offering then it would have been complete i would have thought, but the other option that we find here in the UK is that because bronze was such a rare and valuable commodity it was often recycled again to make other weapons and tools etc.

If a BA was to be recycled they often stored them all in a under ground pit and when they had someone approach them to make as mentioned above weapons or tools then they would smelt them down and pour them into the various molds,so this is why you can find either pits that have all broken tools in or some with brand new ones in or 2 pits side by side,if that is the case then you will find within that area the furnace facilities more smelting the Bronze, maybe near a river or that type of location. But if one does find a single BA item its worth going back and checking the area thoroughly to see if you can find the other tell tale metal workings.

The trouble with BA items like Palstave axes and other weapons although they are usually much more resilient too corrosion like metal blades are they can suffer from something called Bronze disease which can eat away at the Bronze if not treated by a expert in that area.

When you handle some of these items of war like spear heads and Axes folks dont realise how sharp they still can be and when they come out of decent ground the patination on these BA items is simply stunning,BA folks had been the original recycling scrap business of its day.

Thats a lovely find and those Axe heads in the 2nd picture are pure works of art,one of my favourite time periods as well as Celtic.

  7. I would use either a 5.75 DD or the 10x6 coil,i dont own a Tejon,so cannot suggest any settings as such for you too try,i do own and use a Laser Trident 11 Extreme though, thats a super tuned hybrid machine made by the official Tesoro company here in the UK,its basically a Vaquero running @ 18Khz and running on steroids.

A small coil like the 5.75 could well be a nice gold machine, the Tejon would do for the occasional use of gold hunting but the Lobo Super Traq would be the much better option i would have thought and is a proven nugget hunter.

We dont have gold nuggets as such here in the UK but we do have my favourite Celtic gold stater coins that i am after,NEL and Mars do some nice small coils and very good reliable build quality as well, also much cheaper than the Tesoro coils.

  8. The Deus is my main machines these days, have owned one for about 3 years and it just suits my type of detecting when hunting for roman and hammered coins, only use the 9'' coil these days, full tones and 1 on discrimination,Audio Response 5 and basically thats about all the major alteration that i use.

Mine is mounted on the Golden Mask 5 carbon shaft and always run it as a audio only machine, controller is always in my pocket just incase i need to make the odd fine tweak but as a general rule its used as a switch on and go machine,as a result of wrist problems from a bike accident 30+ years ago the injury has started too haunt me when detecting,so for a everyday detecting rig they have to be light weight and the Deus with the 9'' coil certainly is light.

For when i use a heavy hitting rig when on say a possible hoard site using the TDI Pro with a larger coil then i use a full GPX harness and the superb Hipstick which certainly takes all the weight and can swing a large coil with easy, the Hipstick i might add is the vital part of the equation.

Have the WS5 full headphones and also the WS4 for summer/winter use,but in recent months both of these are not used much as i have been using the superb Sennheiser OMX 185 headphones in ear ones but have loops that go over the ear to stop them falling out,the clarity and the improvement in the audio quality is outstanding, when used with the AR5 the deep normal feint targets ring out lounder.

Of course we all detect differently and for different targets,so basically i can only say what works for me on the fine tuning and overall setting up of the Deus, for really trashy sites i use the 'Sifter' settings, infact i will plan on using those settings for almost all my sites.

  9. Steve,i posted yesterday on the 'metal detecting forum' of Findmallthat it was money related, that can only harm Tesoro i reckon, for some reason they just seem to have lost direction and not bothering too keep up in the social media route that all other detector makers have gone down.

Time will tell, but i feel that its just a matter of time before a merger comes along from one of the bigger players or even a Chapter11,just my personal opinion of course.

  10. Steve,i am probably thinking exactly the same as yourself, all though i have never ever had any problems with any Whites detectors, the last one i bought was a TDI Pro dated 2015,so possibly the last TDI sold in the UK,my long term view of reliabilty of this proven design is a minimum of 10 years,i dont tend too change my machines much.

Never sent a machine back to Whites in Inverness for repair or calibration as they just keep working, but since they have gone away from the reliable metal box machines i have also lost my confidence in the brand as well. But if a decent as new MXT came along at the right price i may be very tempted to add that machine to my arsenal before they discontinue them.

Must admit i am finding the older i get the tighter i am getting, but i do have 18 detectors and about 45 coils in my detecting arsenal for various site specific uses.

  11. The initial feedback from new users on the MDF forum is not looking good on these headphones, you cannot turn the volume down on them, they work fine with the cable option but the whole idea of buying them is to be 'wirefree'.

Even the original setup that used a dongle and i think it was BT based was a total failure for the original red Racer, its all well and good having great customer service and receiving new coils and bolts etc,but some underlying quality control problem seems to be the major issue with company, they may be able to bring a product too market very quickly and what the detectorist is looking for and of course the renown customer service.

But the problem of reliability is the long term fly in the ointment here,i am aware that other mayor players are also having issues as well with problems with new machies ie Whites MX sport, but with Makro/Nokta the trend seems to be much wider.

I dont own one of these machines, but my observations are based on what fellow members in my detecting club are reporting as well as on UK forums.

  12. XP have never really been the quickest folks too bring the latest software or coils onto the market, the latest software version 3.2 is very reliable, but saying that version 3.0 and 3.1 'did' have a few glitch that have been rectified in the ultra reliable 3.2 that most folks use today. So yes even XP can get it wrong, but the winning trump card that they hold is the fact that you can down load the latest updates from the internet if a problem does arise and its also free.

No having to send the detectors back too the manufactures for software upgrades to rectify glitches, not sure if the 3030 software can be upgraded that way,but its possible i would think.

Regarding a smaller coil in the 6-7'' size of course that would make a really deadly combination for trashy sites and i guess small gold as well, but my way of thinking is could they have problems putting all the electronics that are in all the other coils including the battery inside that small coil housing ?? gut feeling tells me its not as easy as one would think.

One of the biggest leaps forward and exciting things that will appear within the next year or so is the wireless pinpointing probe that will then be able to give precise information back to the headphones.Pinpointers linked to detectors are not new as such as SunRay have done it for a long time albeit linked with a cable but it still provided basically the same information as what the Deus probe will do but of course without cables.

  13. It may appear all doom and gloom and of course it will be a rocky road ahead for us and other as well, but what folks tend too forget is when we 1st had a vote about joining the EEC as it was then back in the early 70s it was mainly about free trading across European borders and making it so much easier. At the time is was a very good idea and yes i put my hand up and voted like the majority to go into the EEC.

But what has evolved or developed is that we have gradually lost alot of our sovereignty and over the decades folks who have not been elected by us ie  Brussels leaders have been dictating too us what we can or cannot do,infact in the future we would have gradually lost our governing parliament 'which' we the people did elect. And we are not prepared too loose our identity,us Brits can be stubborn,so this is the main reason and the last reason why we grabbed it and left, before we became a directorial state answering too Brussels and non elected leaders.

Of course this is just my opinion, but we have governed our own  future for 1000s of years and once the dust settles down we will be back just as strong as we have ever been before, and yes this time i voted 'out' like the majority of folks did.

  14. I use the 'lite' versions as well, have used them on my DFX,T2,TDI Pro and the Nexus, all work in my opinion very good, cannot notice any form of signal lag, they work as they should do and like the opening poster i have used them for 5-6 hours without any problems with either dropping a signal or battery life issues either.

Have had mine since christmas and no issues after 6 months, only thing i am not keen on and this basically only applies to these up till the new year, the latest ones have both the small usb connections to charge them on the transmitter and headphones,on mine they have the usb charging port on the headphones but in my opinion a horrible magnetic charge connector,it works but you do have to take extra care when locating the connectors together as you can think a connection has been done but infact its not charging.

As long as you check that the light is on the control when starting the charge then you wont have any problems with them,i always carry a 'Battery bank' that i bought from Amazon nd you can get them from Ebay as well, this i always carry with me because i can charge my Deus up and also phones and any other usb charging item as well including both the Deteknix unit,so you dont run out when you are out all day detecting.

These headphone units 'do' get my vote, they do have small niggles like most after market detecting accessories, but they do work, not in the same league say in quality etc as factory made items, but then again they are not in the same league cost wise as say the Deus headphones.

  15. Seems too complicated for me,printing things off etc, folks want a easy to enter competition with as little keystrokes as possible, you may have some good prizes but of course this is just my personal opinion, but as yet no other posts so gut feeling tells me i could be right.

Good luck and hope i am wrong and you get a massive audience participation but alas its not for me.

  16. I have a fair few larger/very large coils for both VLF and PI machines,my main aim is depth here in the UK and not necessary ground coverage, the targets that i am after are old artifacts, scattered coin hoards and locating the actual hoard container itself. One has too step back and think what my targets are and why are they deep ??

Our history in the UK goes back 1000s of years, way before banks or other secure ways of holding coins or artifacts of great value, the only way for many hundreds of years was basically hiding these valuables in the ground or secure locations,as a baseline depth of a man laying down and depositing the hoard at arms length in the hole and then of course back filling it again, hoping to come back after the war, skirmish, plague or what ever the reason for hiding it.

So most detectors either VLF or PI with a standard coil on would struggle to hit these deep targets,so this is the reason i do own some big coils for some of my VLF and PI machines, for the most part the maximum size for a VLF detector is about 15'' as it appears to striggle to gain extra depth due to the dynamics on how these machines work,PI detectors can run a bigger coil and hence why i have s election for both types of machines.

Not only do i hanker for the depth but also on some sites the ground conditions dictate ie minerals and trash which machine i would use,if its a trashy site then i would use a machine that has some form of discrimination on it,

My main VLF machines and coils selection for these types of hunting conditions are:

T2 with NEL 14x13 Storm and BIG Nel 17x15 Coil

    Nexus with dual 9'' coil

I do use a Fisher TW-5 on occasion

IDX Pro with 15'',old machine but really deep and also very cheap to buy for occasional use.

    PI machines for extreme depth.

TDI Pro with 14x9 Coiltek,15x12 Commander Mono,18'' Detech Mono and 20'' Sierra Grande mono the big beast as i call it.

Crossbow PI with Garrett 14x10 Mono.

These coils cover most my needs,if you shop around you can get some amazing 'new' bargain, the 20'' Sierra Grande is normally a $500 just on its own,but after Jimmy Sierra problem with Whites the new coils had been sold off cheap, and including postage to the UK from across the pond it cost me just $190 for a coil of that size,it may sit around gathering dust for periods of time but not alot of money involved so this is why i have a fair few.

Regarding using large coils on detectors, before i invest in a new one i take into account the cost/use and reward ration on the initial invest in a coil,in the case of the 20'' coil above that more than ticked the boxes,so that is why i own it.Its great to speak to other detectorist that you have the largest coil going but unless its used and finds what you are looking for then it means nothing, just a bloody expensive lump of copper wire and plastic.

This is just my take on how i select adn use my coils for my hunting sites,we all of course use different setups.

  17. I had 2 similar handles break in the same fashion on the handle of my Sovereign straight shaft, albeit the Sovereign one did not have the push button as with the GPX,but non the less i also feel it was either a design fault of wrong type of plastic or what ever its made from.

  18. You can design or own the Ultimate Gold Detector including all the above suggestions,i dont and never have done any nugget hunting as we dont have any as such here in the UK,but a detector on its own or with all of the above suggestions wont find gold by itself.

Its the skill of the operator that brings the machine alive and find you gold, not just the machine, you take a detector out into the gold field or up in the hills that you find gold and switch the machine on and put it down on the floor, does it find you gold by doing that 'NO' but a skilled operator will start hunting in the right location and set the machine up and then 'Bingo' it starts hitting targets.
