The 9v battery shorting issue is an easy one to cure !

Just hold the terminals to your tongue till the tingling stops and they should be good to go !

I believe the ML warranty IS transferable on a used unit.  But only for the three years from original purchase

If there are any metal detectin' clubs near ya , I'm sure someone would help you find out and then find the right detector ...meanwhile tell us more about the where and what of your detecting plans so we can make better suggestions on the model.

(Of the 2 you mentioned I'd go with the 540 , but that's just me. ) Tell us more and we'll try ta zero yer sights on the right one ! Or maybe 2 ?

I also use an 800 and it will find things below snow and ice ! ,,, (but I have to mark the spot to see what it is in a couple of months)........assume you have "found" the same lately.🙃 Any beaches nearby ?

I used to buy CRC at NAPA auto parts.

The DEOXIT D5 cleaner comes in a F5 version also (Fader Lube) 

Have used this stuff since the 80s , 

There's also a "marine?" product called Fluid Film , it's made from sheep lanolin. All the boats in the fleet use it . (I have used it on both my detectors on screws and connectors.and have seen it successfully used to rust proof under vehicles too.))
