  1. I was visiting a customer of mine today and he had a ThermoFisher XL3 XRF - I believe someone, possibly Steve, had posted about this technology a while ago.

I happened to have a hunk of manganese loaded quartz in the trunk of my car that we tested it on...absolutely remarkable. In a matter of seconds it will display everything in PPM. When this technology gets to be around $5K +/- I will definitely be investing (The unit that he let me try as configured cost over $30K.)

If you had a serious size lode claim this is something I would think most individuals would want to take a look at.

  2. My interest in detecting placer gold occasionally waivers and I find myself wanting to find and stake claim to a profitable hard rock mine.

Other than the Gold Bug 2 what detectors have you used with success to locate pay-streaks or pockets in hard rock?

  3. Thanks Steve, your explanation definitely makes sense.

So running the ground balance between 60-75 seems to make for a much cleaner signal - I might gain 1/2", so just short of 2" still but definitely a difference.

When I bring the ground balance below around 20 it doesn't even make a peep rubbing it against the coil. 75+ things seem to start to progressively deteriorate with a very scratchy signal.

    So weird.

  4. What am I missing? This nugget weighs just short of half a gram. SDC 2300 barely whispers on it at 1", GB Pro at 100 gain and threshold hum barely pick it up at about the same distance (1"-1.5" off the coil.) As is common knowledge, these detectors will (and have) picked up gold small enough to not really be considered a nugget (see bits in vial.)

What is causing this nugget to be invisible? It is somewhat porous but not to the extent it should affect detection. What are your thoughts?

That appears to be a bit of simi-massive quartz and chalcedony.  The yellowing could be due to iron but its more butter scotch to my view so the yellow could be due to sulfates something else.  Its a silicate.  All thats yellow is not gold.

    Sulfates.

So many new VLF gold detectors to look at lately, sure wish they could be rented or seen all at one location to try out first vs

buying one, then dump it to try another and repeat... . Looks like this is the only one of the bunch that can be hip or chest mounted tho? Whats a treasure hunter to do?

What you said...it's crazy how many good detectors have been/are being released currently.

  7. The 705 doesn't get as much credit as it is due. I owned the 70, and then the 705, for some years and it to this day has been one of my favorite detectors for "all-purpose" work.

With the elliptical coil it does just about as well on gold as any of the new mid frequency detectors (In my opinion.) If I ever encounter another one at a decent price I may be snagging it up. The 3Khz digger coil is a coin slayer, they are expensive but well worth the investment for shooting old silver.

    Nice find!
