  1. I strongly suggest you adjust as many settings as possible, this is the best way to learn what the gpz is capable of.  Start by dumbing down the machine, and then slowly working in the opposite direction with the settings until you feel you have the optimum settings for the ground beneath the coil.  This will take some time and loads of patience, but you will become more efficient as time goes by.

The hard part is over, you found gold, now you just need to get it all.  Have fun.

  2. Depending on the ground your detecting, while using the Detech DD, you may be able to switch the timing to either Normal or Sensitive Extra for increased sensitivity and depth and you should try it on the 14x9 evo as well for kicks.

    Good Luck,

    Brian.

  3. Ground noise WILL mask a target, I have seen it!  That's why I have changed my settings so that I listen to a threshold, an almost smooth threshold, which means I use settings that allow for this style of detecting.  When able to, I hunt in HY/Normal, turning down my sensitivity and volume so that I have an almost smooth threshold.  A friend of mine uses max settings and no threshold and is very successful. It comes down to personal preference.  If your detector is making you crazy, then are you in the right mind to find gold, probably not.

Of all the tips, tricks and procedures, I believe the most important setting is to have confidence in yourself and your equipment.

I just spoke with Todd. He said the 10x5 elliptical was the hot ticket for him. Very sensitive. He didn't really like the 14x9 elliptical, not sensitive enough on the small gold. He didn't get the 11 inch round. So no feedback there.

I think for a patch hunter, the 9x14 or the 11" would be the go coil.  For many years I used a 9x14 coil on my gpx and it worked great, especially when your crawling through the brush.  The stock 11" mono commander coil didn't fit as well around the bushes like the 9x14 did.

    Nice score on the SDC!

A day out on a claim was what was in the description. I'm going to watch more videos too. I understand most of it all but theres only one thing. Can i put it on Deep when in Fine Gold. I'll have to read the manual again :)

Yes, Deep is an audio mode and Fine Gold is a timing.

  6. The yellow ferrite ring is fixed, the ferrite value never changes within that ring, so why not incorporate that value into the equation through firmware everytime the QT button is depressed, as suggested by Jasong.

Last summer, I spoke with a GPZ user from Australia, his recommendation was to balance the yellow ferrite ring in the air.  I have yet to try this technique as carrying around a stick is the last thing I need and finding sticks in the desert is no easy task.

Thanks for the update, I was following that closely. I only have 1 GPZ coil so I'm gonna have to get it right the first time... If someone has a beatup or dead coil (but with a good chip) that is going to no use and they want to offload for cheap, let me know.

Currently I'm working on two houses 1000 miles away from detecting areas for another few months. I'll do some comparison tests at home as I always do with new equipment, which I can share, but it's going to be some before I'm able to actually get into the field. I'll try to take a quick trip out somewhere after I finish the first house though, hopefully in 3 weeks or maybe 4. I'll only have a few days but I can run them over some well known patches that a lot of detecting veterans are familiar with here to get a baseline. I think I might take them to NV instead of AZ to see how they do on salt as I think from AUS reports that they will do ok in AZ already. Chances are good if anyone else here in the US has them on order they will get out to the field before I do though.

Jasong, depending on which part of Nevada you decide to visit, and since you will no longer have a functional 14” coil, if need be, I can meet you in the field so comparable tests can be completed on undug targets.  I can bring my 7000 and 5000.

Also, thank you for the youtube videos, especially the USGS import to Google Earth, its fantastic and very helpful!

  8. Ok Sourdough, I didn't write down the GPS coordinates but I know I was in the Nevada desert as I remember seeing sage brush?  The big one weighs 5.9 dwt and was down 11", wasn't a screamer as I was running very conservative settings but an obvious target through the smooth threshold.
