I'm curious what you think about following the path less-travelled to some of the smaller, less-popular districts

Yep.  completely unknown and unworked areas are the go. These can lead to significant finds.

Even in a small populous state like Victoria (Aus) there are areas that have not been worked at any time in the past or present - and many miles from known gold fields.

As Dale says, do the research and follow the geology. You will often draw a blank but when it pays off, it can seriously deliver:

  2. Been using lipo cordless setups for years on GPX and QED. Only way to fly.

Lightweight and very rapid vehicle recharge (10 minutes) with a balance charger. All available cheaply from Hobbyking or any RC shop.

Prefer headphones (I work mainly in winter) so use Sennheiser RS160 or TDK setup but (as Dale says) works with most speaker transmitter systems. Go lightweight cordless, never look back.

  3. I only paid money for my first (GT16000) after that, I traded gold for all my later detectors.

The only exception was a Garret Infinium. I never found anything with that and quickly traded it for an SD2100. This (attached to Jim Stewart's 36" Bismarck") found an awful lot of big gold.

Haven't bought a detector for years now, mainly testing new QED prototypes for Howard. These always earn their keep very quickly.

  4. Me as well. Sort of related:

When I first started detecting I Thought I'd be a smart*rse and sneaked into a well known rich paddock (Slip Up Lead at Tarnagulla) under the cover of an early morning fog. I latched onto a nice sub oz piece just as the fog lifted alarmingly quickly, leaving me exposed and stranded.

The owner (Hedley Price) spotted me while feeding livestock nearby and quickly drove up beside me in his old ww2 "blitz" truck.

In a panic (and not knowing what else to do) I put my hands up in mock surrender.  Hedley (fortunately) saw the humorous side of it all and chuckled! I showed him the piece I'd just found, he wished me further luck and drove off.

Having learned my lesson, I've always asked permission from that day forward and rarely ever been refused.

  5. - and the same to you Jim and Merry Christmas to all here at DP forum. I wish each and every one of you success in your prospecting endeavours.

Personally, here in Aus, we farmers would be delirious if Santa bought a promise of 10 inches of drought breaking rain in the new year, (hopefully not all at once but past caring) Bring it on!

  6. Looks like I'm the only cat man:

"Tigga" (as a youngster above) is a bit of a homebody. He prefers keeping the bed warm from the inside during winter, snuggled up real close.

He's a big cat and loves catching rabbits, brings them through the cat flap and then consumes them, naturally, under the dining room table on ever ready strategically placed newspapers. There's nothing he loves more than being "bashed" with a rolled up newspaper, which he eventually shreds. He wouldn't have a clue about prospecting, and probably couldn't care less.

Always waiting for me at the door when I return from a days work. Meg tells me he frets when I'm away prospecting.

I've had a lot of close cat friends over the years and hopefully, some of them might put in a good word for me eventually - not that I'm religious - but you just never know eh? Karma and all that -
