I’m glad you brought this up Steve. I was debating whether to let you know of a recent experience just like this.

I posted the need for an original SDC 2300 coil a while back. I received a PM through the forum, by a “member”, about an individual who had a coil for sale. This guy provided a gmail address to contact an individual outside of the forum. I contacted this person and danced around availability, cost and shipping to the point I just told him I was suspicious of the whole thing and was ending it.

After this I went back to the forum to look up the “member” status of the one who send the PM about the guy with the coil. A brand new member with no posts. His only activity was to send the PM to me.

Thanks for bringing this issue to light Steve,

    Mike

I've had several members get scammed this way on my forum. Most long time posters know better than to deal with anyone who approaches them this way. The majority of the ones getting scammed are new guys who have little or no experience buying items online. Scammers suck.

I had to invoke ya man, did you know SS is EMI resistant? Can't thank you enough. 👍

I’ve only had bad EMI issues in one neighborhood that I hunt. Something there makes it go nuts, no matter which program I load up. Other than that, it’s probably the quietest program I use. Glad you like it!

That’s a great spot you’re hunting there! Bet you’ll keep on pulling more good finds from that place!

    Persistence.

+1. That or “invested time” definitely accounts for a large portion of my finds.

Location is definitely a big factor and a little luck never hurts. Detector performance percentage may not be huge if comparing a modern detector to another modern detector, but if we compare something like a Deus 2 or Equinox to the detectors I was using back in the day (Whites 5900, XLT, etc), I’d probably bump that percentage up a bit as performance has come a long way since then! Heck, I remember several of us would call BS when folks claimed they dug a coin at 7” deep back then. Nowadays we dig them at 9”-10” regularly.

Another one that I’d include is “understanding your machine”. That’s a big one IMHO.

  4. 1) Fix Full Tones.

    2) Fix issue with iron falsing at 85-87.

    3) Fix issue with notched comingled targets pulling down ID to 07-09.

    4) Fix poor performance on micro gold.

One that I *wish* could be fixed is the up-averaging of copper memorials which sometimes read well up into the 90s, though I'm not sure if that's even possible.

  5. Good post. I’ve definitely seen a lot of folks with G.A.S… Some of them buy a new detector, use it for a couple of weeks and then sell it. Then, you’ll see these same folks badmouthing said detector on the forums as if their two weeks of use made them some kind of expert on what it can or cannot do. I’m sorry, but it takes a LOT more than a few hunts to properly learn any of these flagship detectors.

I love getting the latest greatest machine as much as anyone, but once I spend my $$$ on it, I instantly feel the need to get a ton of “trigger time” so that I can learn it’s language and try to understand all of its features/capabilities. Otherwise I’d feel like I’ve wasted my $$$. I enjoy the learning process about as much as finding stuff.

I asked my dealer about the Minelab shipment from Friday but he didn't have any other info.  He's still saying maybe before Christmas but possibly after year end.    I'm hoping I'll get an email from him in the next couple days saying my Manticore has been shipped to me.

Yep. I asked my dealer Saturday and got basically the same reply:

    Hi Dewayne,

We are still awaiting the Minelab shipment just like all the other dealers.
We all tend to use the same Minelab distributor in the USA, you are at the top of our list and we should see some start to ship either before Christmas of start of New year.

  7. Not sure I'd call myself an experienced user, but I've played around with the V3i's Polar Plot, the Deus XY screen and Minelab's Target Trace.

Deus XY screen: F350's graphic does a good job of explaining how it works. I tried the XY screen for a while on my original Deus and found that it worked OK for shallow targets most of the time, but its usefulness fell off quickly on deeper targets. You could also be fooled on shallow targets with ferrous nearby. I didn't trust it enough to let it play any major role in my dig/don't dig decision, so I eventually went back to using the standard horseshoe.

Minelab Target Trace: I found this feature useful. The reason being, you could quickly see some extra info at a glance without the need to push any buttons to go to different screens, and you still got all of the standard info on that same screen. You could see a smear when two targets of different conductivity were beneath the coil, or a clearly defined dot building if you had something like a coin in cleaner ground. At a glance, you could see where the target is hitting in relation to the FE & CO position on the screen, along with more info letting you know when multiple targets were beneath the coil.

V3i Spectragraph/Polar Plot: I found the Spectragraph to be a useful feature. When you got 3 clearly defined single bars, good chance it was a coin or some other good target. When you pulled the trigger back, you could see which frequency hit the hardest. Again, useful info. Pushing the trigger forward, you'd get what they called the Polar Plot. To be fair, I rarely used this feature. By this time I usually had enough info to make my dig/don't dig decision and didn't see any need to analyze any further.

Of the 3 detectors I used with 2D graphic info, I found the Minelab Target Trace to be the most useful. Although all provided useful info that may influence my decision slightly, none of them trumped my #1 dig/don't dig influencer: Tone. All of these new bells and whistles are cool, but when it comes right down to it, I still rely heavily on the same thing that I've been relying on since starting this hobby decades ago. Tone is still king IMHO.

  8. Three come to mind.

For me, the first would probably be the White's 5900 Di Pro. Nothing extremely revolutionary about it, but it was revolutionary to me because it was the first detector that I owned with a Target ID. Even though it was analog, it was still a big step up from the previous machines I had used.

The next one would be the Etrac. I was a long time White's hold out (several XLTs, a V3i, etc), so this was my first Minelab. I had seen everyone else having really good results with FBS, so I finally gave in and tried it for myself. They were right! It was an outstanding detector which was not only a silver sucking BEAST, but also very easy to use. I liked it so much that I upgraded to the CTX 3030 when it came out, and I stuck with Minelab all the way up until this year when I swapped to the third detector on my list..

The Deus 2. I wasn't a huge fan of the original Deus for the type of hunting I do. It had some serious up-averaging issues, and to me, it just didn't work very well for hunting coins in modern trash. Then earlier this year I tried the Deus 2 and had a lot of success with it. All of the issues with the original Deus have been sorted, it has a huge selection of audio options, very descriptive audio, its deep, its super lightweight, easy to swing, and sniffs out coins like a blood hound. A great all around detector which covers a lot of bases.
