Spring tides which have nothing to do with the season, are the biggest and lowest depending on how you look at it. They occur twice every lunar month throughout the year. Plan your trips around these times, you will be able to detect futher out than normal.

Yes thank you. I have been following tide charts for years. But is does not take into account wind push and storm factors. All of which can ruin the best low tide.

Headed out tomorrow to a beach a couple of hours drive away with my Nox800. My question is- Should I wait for low tide and hunt the water beyond that, or just go and hunt the sand above the water line while the tide goes out?

Even at low tide I can not get out as far as I would like.   Dave

I can't see any advantage in running the Nox in PP mode - respectively I think it's not possible, because of the "ratcheting" it does. It'll get less sensitive, the more / stronger target's you cross.

I've often done that with my Fisher and concentric coil on difficult spots (beach chairs with metal surroundings f.e.) to find coins in extreme proximity to other metal objects. That worked out pretty good, but the Nox is a whole different beast in PP mode imho:happy:

My limited time tells me the PP mode on the Nox is worthless. Both for pin pointing and hunting, there is no reason to switch out of detecting mode to pin point as detecting mode gives a nice narrow signal..This comes from 25 years on the Sovereign.

There has been talk that all metal mode gives great signals however you will be looking at your screen for numbers more. Report back.  Dave

The reject block is more of a learner method just to be able to settle the machine down so as to be able to hear it in it's rawest form--rejecting iron and alloys.   In any event this dig a million foils in the hope of getting a small (no pendant) chain or earring is over rated.

I've never seen a detctor where coil control was more important for accuracy.  It helps you sort though those high gain sound offs--very important area of skill building.  The idea is to identify targets by how they realate to the ground's signal--how well they are  connected to it.  Anything with steel or iron will lack symetry or ID (a lot) differently on the cross sweep.

First I appreciate your reply. I am in your camp on caring less about small gold.

My comment on coil control is just due to lack of time on the Nox. For some reason I felt I could move the coil too fast in a recovery of 6 and miss a target. I am sure with more time this will hopefully pass. Where I hunt if a wave retracts, I like to swing as fast as possible while no water is standing there. I do see what you see once a target is acquired, THEN there is a certain speed which is needed for good ID.

Thanks for the explanation of the block. For some reason I thought you might be using this as a hedge for black sand and/or moving water?  The beach where I hunt has no can slaw and almost no tinfoil. However I will try that block to see the results, it does make sense.   Dave

  5. Bringing back up for clarification by the OP.......

Have you tried this block in salt water? Would you be worried it would also reject small gold chains?

#2 If I am digging anything with a good repeatable signal say 7 plus, why should I run more than one tone? Just pick one tone and run the "tone volume" all the way up?

Also you call it "coil control" maybe sweep speed? My opinion as a beach hunter: I do not like how sensitive this detector is to sweep speed.

The Nox is WORSE than the Xcal or CTX for loosing targets in the hole.   Not certain why..... but yes ive noticed it......i also know everything moves to the center of the hole...... so out comes another scoop.    Its a bit frustrating........ just knowing its there and you dont have a good signal on it that it is taking that next scoop that you would have anyway.

In my limited use......I noticed a bit more defined target in AM. Are you in AM?  did you try switching?

  8. A waterproof connector cable like Minelabs BUT where my Black widows and Sun Rays will work. I am not a solder guy. But this is a great business idea that will sell thousands. My guess is cheaper and better than a $40 bill to Minelab for something not working. Please contact me directly for my specifications, if you can or want to.

    Thanks Dave

Curious to know if any of you that hunt the beach and surf have the same feeling that Gravedigger Max of Virginia Beach has? He had a Nox, seemed to like it, then it was gone? He has spoken of two reasons for getting rid of the Nox. 1) He felt it was finding too many small items, trash mostly I think. But isn't that what this machine does, find small items? And 2) this is the one I'm asking all you beach Nox hunters to chime in on...Max feels the Nox isn't a strong enough unit to hunt in the surf. The video he mentions this in, is one where he is using his ExCal with waves hitting him at about knee level or a bit higher.

I doubt many here hunt a rougher beach than I do in Mexico. IF my headphones would work...…..Maybe a review I could give.  After 8 hours of use, and a good wave pounding I do not see long term issues right now. I already know the Equinox loses depth and finding ability in moving water. Now does it lose more or less ability than my Sovereign?  I would need  about 50 more hours to answer.  D

I just received that cable and will try it with my various iterations of GG's and Whites H/P's to see if I have issues.  Still not sure why it works with the WM08 but not the detector jack.

I want to make it clear that after 8 hours on the machine now it is NOT working correctly with the WM08 either.

    Did you figure it out?

NO and I am so pissed. I was on the phone with Minelab Tech support today. They want me to try a mono to stereo adaptor in-line. I asked them where I could find one where I am at in Mexico?  They are selling a cable with ZERO testing and letting everyone figure out there own issues. A .75 cent adaptor would of solved this issue and should have been looked after by the MFG. Did they REALLY think someone buying this cable with 1/4 jack was going to use their specific headphones?????  Dave

Your Sunray Pro Gold headphones has a "Mono / Stereo" switch it is the one on the right hand side of the "Volume Knob" I use a cheap Stereo to Mono adapter lead off Ebay about $3 / £2 and using it with my Sunray Pro Golds and the WM08 all I need do is ensure that the Mono - Stereo switch on the Sunrays is in the down position and the "Volume Knob is turned to full volume.

    Hi Randy

Neither my sun rays or black widows would work with the waterproof cable and flipping the mono/stereo switch on both phones made no difference.

One chance might be an Mono <-> Stereo adapter. I "think" I had the same issue with my Jolly Rogers, but with an off the shelf 1/8-1/4 Stereo adapter. By the looks, the Minelab adapter is Stereo-Stereo, too ..

As a last resort, you won't get around to measure the phones and make some wiring changes. If you're not comfortable using an soldering-iron, you're stuck... maybe you have a friend or neighbor who can help you out?

No soldering for me. I will look for a Mono to Stereo adapter but do not think any of my local stores will carry one now that Radio Shack is closed.. But for the .75 cents they cost Minelab should of had one in the bag.

Sinclair meant did you try any other headphones besides your detecting phones that have 1/4" connectors to see if what you have is a bad adapter cable.

The Minelab factory phones are 1/8 jack as well for the Sony ones. Other than the Widow's and Pro Golds I have no other 1/4 jack phones.....but the cable works OK with the WM08.??
