Which is exactly why ML recommends using tracking GB in that particular situation (user guide p. 41)

Other detector manuals have not exactly told me what is the best way to hunt and/or hunt in my location.  I was hoping to get a real fringe target that day that I could work in either mode to see what rang up better. I did not consider any of the targets that day fringe targets. Except for a few ferrous ones.  Unfortunately I will not be back on the beach until July. Also it seemed neither mode allowed me to jump a power level. I was able to hunt both ways running 21 [beach2] . there was too much chatter in going to 22 in each mode.

  2. The last day I hunted because of this thread, I switched between manual and auto GB. In manual I had it set at zero. EVERY target dug I went into each of the GB modes. I did not notice a depth increase over another mode.

The only thing I noted was a little more stability [quiet running] in tracking GB with moving salt water up and down the beach.

  3. There is a thread on "other sites' asking about recovery speed and depth? With SALT WATER. The only question was do you loose depth, in a higher recovery?  I would say with the NOX at 6 there is a balance with quiet running and depth in salt water.[esp with black sand]  With a machine like the Sovereign in all metal Pinpoint mode it is doubtful you can overswing or swing this too fast on ANY salt beach. Yesterdays take with the sovereign in all metal pinpoint [for those who never had a 186 coin day]. [347 pesos]

Beach 1 and 2 acted exactly the same. They are the only modes I can use with power above 15. I am sending in my Nox for repair just to be on the safe side. Neither of the other two high powered machines act this way even if they have same limitations. The reason I dont want to continue with the bounty hunter is due to soil depth changes and speed.  I have to move like a snail with the BH and knowing the soil depths can change in a matter of feet has led me down this road. The soil in the places I hunt has the following layers 1st layer is normal grass/thatch which is 1-3 inches and the second layer is a black loomy rocky(pebble size) soil or black sandy soil. The third layer is a grayish clay. I have never found anything in the clay layer even when I borrowed a friends ATX for a few weeks last summer. I even hunted and old turn of the century site where a big canning plant was. All the big chunks of lead were sitting on top of the clay layer same as if I hit them with 800, BH or Deus. Ok back on point.... The middle layer is my issue. The bounty hunter being low powered will find most things the others will in areas where the 2nd layer is only 1-3 inches. So I need a machine I can get through the 2nd layer all the way to the clay. With the black loomy rocky soil I get false signals all the time. I then dig and dig and nothing. The sandy loomy layer is the biggest problem. It seems no matter what machine I use I cant hit anyrhing in that layer. The electromagnetic properties are strange in that it soaks up the signal and the machine gets chattery. The only things I have found in this type is while it was still attatched to the top layer or just starting to sink into the loomy sandy soil. I bet alot of goodies have went into the layer and are waiting to be found. I just cant find anything that will hit in this stuff. The difference in depth from 1 foot to the next can change from 1/2 inch of the 2nd layer to 15 inches of the second layer. I know I am confusing everyone and I am sorry I just cant explain it any better. I am also going to order a 6in coil for the nox and see if that helps.

Beach 1&2 are not the same. [I am a salt beach hunter]  2 is WAY more stable. Try keeping your recovery speed at 6. At least in Salt and especially black sand it seems to keep it more stable. Confirm targets by going to "all metal".  But as you may know NOTHING is the same in poor soil or black sand conditions.  When in doubt, dig it, and check targets from more than one position.

What are you doing with GB?

Are you the same Dave I met in the water 2 weeks ago in MX and you were swinging an Xcal with custom headphones?  If I went 12 days with no gold, I'd need a few margaritias.

Kind of weird...I do own a Xcal with custom headphones but that machine is back in the US. I would be the "Dave" with the chest mounted Sovereign GT, and the under performing Equinox.  Now 14 days  no gold! Yes I had a Margarita today.

No problem if the module is close to the headphones, big problem with the module close to a cell phone.  Are you getting drop outs or no signal at all?  The module seems to be easily blocked by your body.  Unlike the wireless headphones where the receiver/transmitter is on your head, the WM08 module basically needs to be on the same side of your body as where you are swinging the control head, i.e., clean line of sight.  If it is blocked by your body or if there is a cell phone near the module, it tends to break up the signal.  It's ok for it to sit in a breast or hip pocket as long as it is on the same side as where you are swinging the detector.  HTH.

Since I was trying to hang it on the back of my hat this makes sense it could not make it through my thick skull.

  7. Still can't seem to get my @%^&&&() Black Widows to work wireless but OK now wired. Has anyone had issues with putting the module close to the phones?   Also mine seems to be falling on it's face in moving salt water, but that is another thread.   Dave

In regards to the show or in his personal career?

Your mistake was being so quick to release your Equinox book, then scrambling to release a second book with apparent "new" information. It was new information in the sense you didn't give the first book enough time to soak, chapter 2 might have been a more appropriate title.

I follow him on google plus where he gives out a couple of good tips fairly frequently, free of charge. They are useful tips too, not some non- sequitur teaser.

IMO Gary Drayton could be considered the best detectorist in the world, of the ones that we all know about. It depends on the criteria as a hard core nugget hunter may choose someone else. Gary is a prolific and world class "treasure" hunter.

A guy like Bill Ladd would be a close second. His finds don't have the same sparkle as some of Draytons, but the guy can produce in the north east.

Third place would be myself, nobody can make something appear from nothing like I can. I don't have the finds of Drayton, or recycled pictures of rings like you do, but if we were ever on the same site I would detect circles around you. You better hope I never make it to one of your beaches, it will look like the surface of the moon when I'm done with it.

Professionals don't leave ANYTHING looking like "the surface of the moon".

I have had good success with the 800 using factory settings.  Lately, the beach targets have slowed down significantly due to fewer tourists and more detectorists.  Will a slower recovery speed give more depth and increase targets?  Let me add I use beach 1, all metal, sensitivity around 22.

Everyone has to figure out what works out on their beach, but I personally do not see recovery speed tied to depth,  in the 3-6 range. However no doubt the higher sensitivity you can run the better. I think Clive has pointed out how a "high" recovery speed  can stabilize the unit in salt, therefore you may be able to run a higher sens.

Myself, I HATE a detector that chatters too much on the beach.  I find that the time period of the low tide and the ability to cover more ground[sand] FAR out weighs trying to scrub every faint signal/false signal on the beach.  In a 3-4 hr period I need to complete 1 1/2 mile section of beach at the tides lowest point, if my detector is chirping too much for me to do this, I will have left possible targets in the sand.

Looking at my notes from last season there were 4-6 days in the 45 days I worked that no chatter/falsing would have been mandatory.

  10. Well two things come to mind. Out on the beach and the day before we had a really good earthquake. A lady in good spanglish, dead serious, asked me if I was trying to figure out when the next earthquake was going to happen. My answer....Si, un muy grande in cinco hours.

#2 Had the typical stalking heckler following me, Dad and son...getting the beep beep noise [from them] and have you found any gold bottle caps ......blah, blah. Would cha know it, that the scoop I was doing has a medium thick gold neck chain dangling off the front. I looked at them smiled and said "that was a good beep beep"........

If you have spent any amount of time swinging there is no limit on lip service.

I need a metal arm cuff that I can bend to fit my arm. The factory cuff is way too large.

What arm cuff should I use and where in the US would I order one?

    Thanks,

    George Sears

Get a Minelab Sovereign cuff, it is also run on other Minelab machines. Once mounted put a metal shim through the bottom slots to close smaller..  Dave

We are so used to having a pattern of tones.  Low for foil up to high for coins.  We have options for tones now days we need to use them especially for gold hunting in the water.  Other wise we end up coin hunting

Well mid tones seems to work pretty well in dry sand.  I don’t do a lot of dry sand hunting but I get antsy after a few days not getting in the water.  14k .5 grams read as 1 digit and sounded off good.  My bins seemed good as did the tones on those expected targets.

Foil would/could ring up as a "1" as well??? No??  Dave

  13. For the beach! I am still wondering WHY I would want more then one tone? If it is out of the "ferrous" area and repeats, DIG IT.  There is still lots of information that can be garnished from every signal by hunting in one tone like: Size, depth, length, and then comparing every signal in the same tone.  Convince me otherwise!  Dave

The Equinox is wired just like the CTX 3030 and GPZ 7000 so none of this is new. A cheap mono to stereo adapter solves the problem

Many of us who hunt the beach Steve do not want another adapter to keep salt free. What about extra impedance in-line?  I like my Salt Water set-up to be as clean as possible which usually means trouble free.

Since I never owned a 3030 or GPZ it was new to me. With no explanation from Minelab and flying 1200 miles  not being able to use my machine was not a pleasant experience.

That 1/4" phone jack is was designed in 1877. 1877. Unlikely a plot to make you buy their cans.

If I am wrong, fine it's just that so far it's only homemade headphones that I have heard about having problems, again correct me if I'm wrong.

So what is the problem?, you still haven't explained yourself clearly.

Why don't you complain to Sunray about their weird headphone wiring?

There is a technical difference the way a 1/4 jack can be wired. It can be wired to just mono, it can be wired to just stereo, it can be wired to do both. This is in conjunction with the circuit to disconnect the audible speaker when the headphone jack is plugged in.

Minelab took it upon themselves to wire their detector out of the normal. QUALITY headphones such as Black Widows, Sunray, Rattlers and others will NOT work because of how Minelab wired their headphone circuit. This is NOT a headphone problem. It is a Minelab MFG problem.

Why would Minelab write a disclaimer, is there something peculiar about the Minelab adapter? I use the WM08 with other headphones, the problem is probably with your headphones.

Well yes there is. It's called Stereo and Mono. Since Minelab does not provide 1/4 jack headphones with the 600 or 800 you bet your bottom they should provide an explanation.   Zero paperwork in that adapter package.
