It was used on the ATX. I noted to Garrett that it is critical for people to know about these coils, as people just think they are standard DD coil. I made quite a big deal about the fact this coil has been around for awhile, but that Garrett has never bothered to explain it to anyone. I mean seriously, when do companies pass on touting something new and coming up with new acronyms for it?  I was calling it the Bullseye DD (Garrett now owns the White's rights to that name) but they just recently settled on Focused Core. Probably did not want it confused with the Bullseye pinpointer. But yeah, I'll take credit for this finally being explained as an exclusive Garrett option.

I did chuckle over the brand new thing. I've explained this all in detail previously months ago, including the ATX connection. Went out of my way to highlight it as a must read, pinned it to the top of the forum, you name it. Just proves nobody actually reads my stuff. I have kind of a why bother feeling about that. 🤷🏼‍♂️ I've added the new video though so that helps.

Kudos! That bit of information (video) should help sales. I do read the forums when I get time. But with limited time, I get bits here and there, some big bits and some small bits as time allows, (usually with morning coffee).

Yes, I think on bigger sizes of gold like your test bits the Manticore will do well and may even exceed the Equinox as they get bigger, it's still very early days so time will tell, I was more concerned about the absolutely tiny gold sensitivity where I think so far the Nox is going to be the winner.

The Nox is right up there with the higher frequency dedicated gold machines on the tiniest flakes of gold, it looks like the Manticore may not quite be that good, but still will be good as a general gold prospecting detector, just leaving behind the tiniest bits most people don't care about.  If a smaller coil comes out for it  from Coiltek to compete with the 6" the Equinox has it may all change.  Hopefully they're going to make a 5 or 6" round coil for it to make up for Minelab not doing so.

I agree. Like gold panning, that small gold takes a lot to add up to anything. If I can’t get pickers at least, I don’t want to waste my time.

Quite aware of the sens ranges of both machines . That was not the point . The aim was to see how the Manticore performed on small gold . As I said , I could have run the Manti at a higher sens as it was handling the town EMI better than the Nox . The Nox was unusable at higher than 17 with the Manti starting to get noisy at 19-20 . I also doubt that Nox 17 and Manti 24 are truly relative . A simple division of 35 divided by 25 does not allow for any extra power to the coil and says they have just spread out the sensitivity scale . From my small test I think the Manti would have out performed the Nox if I cranked it up . Any way real world detecting in the bush will be the real test and that won't be happening until a smaller coil becomes available .

    My way of looking at it was 17/24 = 68% and .68 x 35 = 23.8(24)

Tried the Manticore on a couple of nuggies on the front lawn today .   I fired up the Nox 800 first using gold 1 and the Coiltec 10x5 .  Town EMI would not let me run the Nox at any higher gain than 17 , and that was noisy .  Used goldfield general on the Manticore sens 17 , and of course the M 11 coil . I could have run the Manticore a couple notches higher but wanted to keep things as equal as possible . The bigger nugget was detectable by both machines at near 4 inches .  The Nox had a clear advantage of about one inch on the tiny nuggie while the Manticore could barely see it at one inch .  Tried all the other modes and interestingly found that Beach deep was almost as good as the goldfield mode . A smaller coil on the Manti' and we might just be able to use some of that claimed extra power in the field as it was much better at handling the EMI .

    Targets used .

Manticore should be at 24 sensitivity and equinox at 17 to be equal. Manticore goes to 35 and equinox goes to 25 max’s.

I will clarify in case my post was confusing, now I read it back it even confuses me 🙂

The Manticore needs run on higher sensitivity settings to achieve the same results the Equinox 800 can get on lower sensitivity settings, but the problem is it's hard to run the Manticore on these higher sensitivity settings due to EMI when you get to the 30 - 35 sensitivity range where as for me at least I normally always run my Nox on 25 when prospecting.

The Manticore may very well end up similar in performance overall IF you can run it on it's highest few sensitivity settings.

I think the Manticore on 30 on tiny gold is similar to the Nox on 20 with the sensitivity settings, the Nox on 25 (max) is slightly outperforming the Manticore on 35, I think mainly due to the Manticore being troubled by EMI at 35 more than the Nox is at 25.

Where the Nox is going to have the advantage is by having the smaller 6" coil, which is crazy the tiny gold it can find.

I just can't see the Manticore with it's 8x5.5 M8 coil matching the small gold performance based upon what I've seen so far comparing the Nox 11" vs the Manticore 11".  I was hoping the extra power to the Manticore coil may increase small gold sensitivity, after all that's what they did with the White's/Garrett 24k and it's very much worth reading that link if you haven't already.

It's a shame they're not doing the 6" coil for the Manticore, hopefully Coiltek come out with a 5 or 6" round for it, the EMI will be less and possibly the higher 30-35 settings maybe more usable and it then match or better the Nox, but with the Nox 900 now having more sensitivity over the 800 that maybe a difficult challenge for it.

It makes me wonder if as a coin machine the Manticores 0-30 sensitivity is the same as the Nox's 0-25 but on a different scale, with the same top end sensitivity and the boosted sensitivity over the Nox is when you go from 31 to 35 in the red line zone.

I'm not overly bothered it doesn't appear to match the Nox, not enough to go out and buy a Nox 900 as I rarely use a VLF for gold and the 800 and 24k do the job for me anyway.  It is a bit disappointing though, hopefully my early testing is wrong and I change my mind with more time behind the wheel.

I noticed too that the Manticore isn't as sensitive to gold as the 800. But maybe software updates will correct this. I plan to use the Axiom on gold, and I got the Manticore so I could cover everything outside of the Axiom. The 2 should be all that I need for whatever detecting comes about. The plan was to clear everything else out and have just the two, (and maybe one other for family loan-out).

  6.    Although I haven't been able to go out and field test the Manticore, (due to the cold and wet weather), I've been learning the detector very easily, more so than I did with the Equinox. One improvement that I am liking at the moment, other than the 2D screen, is that I can notch the iron rejection. No more just the FE(2) setting that blanket's across the board! This is not 100% perfect, but it's a huge improvement. What are you other user's liking so far in the set-ups?

The current Garrett ATX is in direct competition with the Garrett Axiom. In any competitive business timing is everything or you will eat those develop costs. I am the consumer this time and not the seller and I assure you there are other options available. Garrett either needs to upgrade the ATX or pull it off the market.

The ATX has it's place until the Axiom becomes waterproof. And that would add some weight to the Axiom. I don't need waterproof, myself.

Me too!  What a read, I just learned after 10 years my old White TDI SL has apparently missed a bunch of 1/4 ounce gold nuggets. After a recent search on my part for a newer better replacement it appears, in my absence while reading, that Minelab has climbed the mountain with their 7000 and has turned back down-slope with the 6000. The only thing I see keeping the new axiom from getting out of the way before being buried by an imagined top secret GPZX 5500 is the ML military grade SDC 2300; pre-owned ML GPX 5000’s equipped with all those slightly used multi-shaped coils; and the military grade under-water ATX.  I don’t know how much lead there is in a “three ringer” or how many nickels there are in the sea nor how much warehouse space there is east of Dallas. But when that hoped for modestly priced, light-weight, land-based, quarter ounce nugget vacuuming pulse induction detector hits the market place the assumption could be made that the true cost impact was factored by someone who stepped on their slide rule while searching for batteries for their outdated TI calculator. So here I sit and ponder, should I give up my 3.5 pound nugget missing single minded PI for 5.4 lbs of old military grade waterproofing; for 6.9 lbs of even older military grade waterproofing; or for an expensive 4.2 lbs. rain resistant new comer. Or should I just wait a couple of years for the dealers to catch with all those axiom pre-orders once they sell off their existing shelf stocks of those not that hard to find 4.2 pounders. How many more 1/4 ounces nuggets would be added during this wait to those already missed. Hell by that time with all this water falling from the sky I could scoop them up with that light-weight mud-resistant shovel I was eye balling down at the army/navy surplus store. Well, that’s about a full circle..or is it.   Who’s Nokta?

It’ll be tough for other manufacturer’s to beat the Axiom’s weight, construction, and price point! If you need waterproof, go with the SDC2300 or ATX.

I had actually planned on hunting Tahoe a lot with my Axiom this fall but winter hit with a vengeance and that was that. I've actually got a 13" mono coil that I am going to fill with epoxy for water hunting, but am hoping that either Garrett or Detech will give us a water coil or two by spring. The existing coils are just too buoyant, and injecting one with epoxy like I am doing is not what we really want. Anyway, it will be awhile before I hit the beach. I was thinking of popping over to the coast, but snow in the passes is not making that look like a good idea either. Oh well, soonish......

I've been over Donner a few times. One time I sat idle for 4 hrs. 4x4 is a must. I would go back to Reno if ever I needed to chain-up. Chains and I don't get along.

Thanks, Steve.  Had just run across a great deal on the ATX but looks like I’ll save up a bit longer for the Axiom.

I sold my ATX, of which I really liked (except for the weight), and I bought an Axiom, and glad I did! I'm counting the days to get out and really use it in the fields, as It's been raining steadily here in Oregon. So far, I have put on an anti-scratch screen cover and bought a head cover. The entire shiny face will be susceptible to scratching, or marring from dirt on the fingers, as I have seen on some YouTube videos. Just my preference to keep things looking good (taking into account what I paid for it). Wait for the Axiom!

With this last update my work on Axiom is essentially done now. Detectors will be shipping to dealers soon, and I guess I’ll just sit back and see what happens. New detector release drama I am sure, Johnny on the spot comparison videos by people with two hours use, and all that fun stuff. My goal is to pretty much sit it out and just watch. A year from now the dust will have settled, and where the Axiom fits into the overall scheme will be sorted out. But for now, let the fun and games begin!

Has Garrett released software for updates on the Axiom?

  12. I opted for the international version. 13" mono and 11" DD. One drawback is that it comes with wired headphones. But I don't normally wear headphones, so no worries there. One of my main reasons is that I like DD coils and the 11" is lighter, which is a main preference for me. I would have preferred a kit with just the one coil at a cheaper price!

Would basic Bluetooth headphones work with Z-Link?

I have the manticore and have taken it out 3 times this past week. I took it to a local park that has an adjacent rec center that was the first school in our city so it has an early 1900’s history. I’ve hunted it about a dozen times with a whites MXT, then my Equinox 800 with the stock coil, the 15” coil and the small coil. In my previous hunts, I have found hundreds of coins and several silvers. I went back to the location just to see if the Manticore would uncover more targets from the same area. The patch of grass I concentrated on is about 20 feet wide and 150’ long. Working this area with the manticore a few hours over two trips, I was amazed at the number of additional coins that I recovered (about 30). The advantage I recognized was the separation of the trash and targets.  Also, painting the separate targets on the 2D screen allowed seeing the targets on the screen for about 3 seconds even after the numerical VDI indicator has disappeared. I’ve found myself digging less trash thanks to the 2D screen as well. A good VDI number showing on the screen can be double checked with the 2D portion to see if the target is bleeding out of the upper or lower 2D ferrous areas which can indicate a trash target (depending on what you’re hunting).  The target identification seemed to be more accurate on the deeper targets than the equinox.  The manticore seems to hit very well on deep dimes.  The VDI screen backlighting and control button backlighting are very bright and adjustable.  The “flashlight” option, for detecting at night, is pretty weak. You’d be better off using a headlight if night detecting is your thing.   I have not had time to test the Manticore on gold nugget targets yet. Just my two cents on my initial usage. I’m happy and pretty impressed with it so far.

What dealer did you get it from?
