See the characteristics/specs that Steve H. just posted in his detector database entry for the Manticore.  Your answer is there.

I was hoping for some separation difference to be displayed in gold nugget detection on the Arizona video. I don't see what youre referring to in the detector database.

Video posted Nov 26, 2022 Prospector Pete gets the honor of working with Minelab Debby and they put the Manticore to use - "This metal detector is not yet available to the public until early 2023, but we take a sneak peek into the features of this machine, it truly lives up to its name! 2-D graph allows you to visualize what is beneath the ground. This unit allows you to size the target and get an idea of what material it is made of. The armrest is new and is designed for ergonomics and comfort. I am very impressed by this unit! I can not say enough about this very impressive metal detector."

I was hoping for some separation difference to be displayed in gold nugget detection. But it’s probably not going to be possible.

People may have noticed I have largely stayed out of this. I'm well over all the hype, and totally agree with Jason. We are literally announcing announcements now.

People are self hyping themselves to death over this, with various interests more than happy to fan the flames. It's totally new? No, it's the next logical iteration I would expect as a followup to the Equinox. Totally new or iteration is just how you look at things. If it has just one thing different some people want it to be totally new, nothing ever made like it ever before. That's what feeds the hype machine - oh my gosh, it's super duper really new magical technology!!!!! One generation ,no, two generational leap to the moon technology!!!!!!!! But anyone who has an Equinox and gets a Manticore will find out real fast it's just the next step. Take an Equinox, listen to the feedback for four years, fix the issues, improve what you can, all with an eye to filling the now vacant $1500 E-TRAC price slot = Manticore. The Equinox took everything to the next level, and squeezing anymore performance out with newer models is at the point of diminishing returns. It may not be what people want to hear, but mark my words and remember them later when the dust settles.... this is Equinox Mark 2. I'm not saying that to belittle it. Just the opposite. The Equinox took us all to a new level, and Manticore takes everything Minelab learned from that, and makes it better across the board. About the only thing I'm unsure about is how water hunters will like that new coil with the added superstructure - not going to cut water like the Nox 11". But other than that, this is the perfect machine for somebody that loves the Nox, but wants more.

Be nice if they took some of the improvements made with Manticore, and used them to refresh the Equinox with an update also.

I really like and enjoy working with the engineers at Minelab, but their marketing people seem to keep getting farther and farther from what I want to see as a down to earth detectorist. Everything about the Manticore release puts me off, with the exception of them letting Mark loose to blab away. That part is fun and informative, as the engineers are usually kept under lock and key. But all this other stuff, even the name.... not turning me on at all. I do miss Bill Stirling and the days when marketing was driven by tech papers and actual detecting experts. Now it's all Chicago style flash, no substance. Except for Mark. I can only appreciate how hard it is for a nerdy engineer type to stand in front of crowds like he has been doing - good on him.

Anyway, people are desperate for information, and love to discuss, and that's good, as that's what a forum runs on. I do want to thank people here for having sane and rational discussions. It means I can be off doing other things and not worry some sort of fight will brew up. That is something else to be thankful for today. Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm waiting for the reviews. Too much market build-up will set-up a letdown. I noticed if someone comments on the Manticore, the flood gates open to many speculations. I just bought an 8lb. jug of Orville Redenbacher's and awaiting the next go-around. Never a dull moment on DP! Gotta' love it.

I just received an email from my distributor confirming my order.

“Should be at the Sparks (Nevada) warehouse soon”.

I asked about the accessory coils and they’re not available yet.

Thought everyone would like to hear the good news!

Walt, I hope you bring the Axiom to the next meeting!

I almost never use my Equinox for nugget hunting. I use PI detectors for nugget hunting 99% of the time. I have used the Nox to find gold, and often have it along as a backup machine, or just in case I might want to play in an exceptionally trashy area, but fact is I almost never actually turn it on for that use. Fact is I almost never use VLF detectors, except when I am testing them for somebody. I do use the Nox now and then up at Tahoe for beach detecting. In the last year I have used the Axiom almost exclusively, with Nox used for beach detecting at Tahoe a couple times. Last time I found a nugget with the Nox was in Alaska summer before last, and even then I was just sort of playing around with it. That kind of sums up VLFs and me for nugget hunting. I play around with them a bit for fun, but any time I have hunted gold seriously in the last decade I have been swinging a PI.

I assume that goes for the 24K also. I’ve been cleaning out a few detectors with hopes of purchasing the Axiom.

Good to know, and good to be done with this project. It’s been fun, but I’m looking forward to just doing the kind of detecting I want to do, when I want to do it. It will be fun instead to see what people think of the Axiom, as the first owner reports start to filter in. I better stock up on popcorn!

Now that have used it a lot, will you still use your Equinox for nugget hunting?

The Deus ll is the real deal !!! ( JMHO )

This is a prospector forum. The Equinox has been shown to outdo the Deus 2 on small gold. XP could update the gold program to be more sensitive on small gold, I'm sure. But that could possibly push the ORX sales aside, therefore an update probably won't happen!

I noticed there are some Minelab specials with free coils, etc.  happening right now.  I was just wondering what if Minelab runs a Black Friday special on Manticore pre-orders.  Do we all cancel our existing Manticore order and place a new one with another dealer to get the discount or free extra coil or whatever or do we just call our existing dealer and ask for the special?

All that I saw was the CTX 3030 with a free coil.

it seems no manufacturer is immune to the most simple things being problems, they do amazing things with the hardware and software to make incredible metal detectors and then simple things make them look like fools.  I really don't get it.

I agree. I would rather have top quality construction and make less profit. If they saved on $3 each machine multiplied by 5 million detectors out the door, adds up to big profits.

I've heard people say putting a little clear silicone jell in the D2 slot that holds the Remote Control will keep it from falling off.  Just give it a day to setup after applying.

When paying that kind of money, why should anyone have to "Gerry rig" or modify anything? These manufacturers should concentrate on quality instead of quick production. Hopefully this is why Minelab has waited this long.

(Veering OT here, but there has been XP Deus 2 discussion so maybe that makes going off on a tangent regarding the new ML detector's name OK.  😁)

You mean my tongue in cheek mention of needing the backlight from Autumnal Equinox until Vernal Equinox?  No.  Poles and equator are unique in having very different daylight vs. time-of-year than typical mid-latitudes (for example).  Summer solstice is max daylight everywere in the hemisphere.  Winter solstice is minimum everywhere in the appropriate hemisphere.  Equator has same amount of daylight every day of the year.  The poles have the weirdest solar path in the sky since it's always parallel to the horizon!  On the Summer Solstice the sun starts in the north at midnight and makes a complete lap always staying ~23.5 degrees (Earth's axis tilt with respect to its orbit) above the horizon.  The next day it does another lap, but about 1/4 of a degree lower.  On the Autumnal Equinox it's worked its way down to the horizon*.  It continues to descend further below the horizon by about 1/4 of degree until the Winter Solstice when it reaches its lowest orbit and then slowly, day by day, makes its return to the horizon on the Vernal Equinox and then on back up to max on the Summer Solstice.

*Because of the refraction of the earth's atmosphere, the sun will appear a bit above the horizon whenever it's geometrically right on the horizon, regardless of where you are on the earth's surface.  Also, each of these four special conditions (two Equinoxes and two Solstices) only lasts an instant, not an entire day.  So at the pole the Sun is only technically at its maximum altitude for that instant and is working its way towards max pre- and away from it post- Summer Solstice (instant).

I'll finish with a question to get back on topic:  why didn't Minelab call this new detector the 'Solstice'?  I'm sure no one would have ridiculed them for that....  🤔  (But they still would have been stealing the name from an automaker, this time the now defunct Pontiac.)

    Chase,

Thanks for the info.  So, it's not as simple as x,y coordinate pairs being plotted on an x,y coordinate system, with x and y representing two specific characteristics of the target.  It's quite a bit different, actually.  Hmm...

I don't like that idea, as -- for instance -- it's more like having to simply "memorize" that a "spiral shape" means "difficult to reject" items, and a "lower left to upper right" oval shape means "coin," without a more clear, direct, logical relationship between what is being plotted, and what it says about the target.  It seems "abstract," and harder to understand "linearly" or "logically," as compared to plotting an FE,CO coordinate pair...

In any case, thanks for the info!

    Steve

Not exactly. From what I have seen, e.g., foil for instance will show non-fe but it will be a scattered unstable figure on the screen, on the other hand a coin in the same quadrants will be more uniform, stable, straighter, and narrower in shape. I think it is a great visualization. If it had better gold sensitivity, I would forget about the Manticore. The other thing is some people claim they are playing too much "Deus 2" (programming) than actual detecting. I'm not sure if you can set the programs and they remain, or if you have to go through all the steps to get what you want every time you turn it on?

PSPR -- don't take too much offense, LOL!  I am pretty sure there's no offense intended.  Alot of people don't like the "Manticore" name that Minelab came up with, so there was some "creativity," here on the forum, early on, kind of poking fun at what some see as a poor job of naming the machine.  Thus, bringing some levity to the situation, folks have come up with some equally poor names for the unit.  And these attempts at humor come both from those who ARE interested in the machine, and those who may not be.  That "trend" has sort of caught on, here, as a sort of "unique" thing on this specific forum.  Dreaming up a new, funny name is just an attempt at humor.  No offense intended; it's not even a poke at the machine itself, just a poke at what some perceive to be a poor choice, by Minelab's marketing department, for a name.

I think most here with a new D2 would probably do the same.  You can't just go around dropping $1600 every time a new detector comes on the market.  If I had bought a D2 I wouldn't be in the market for a Manticore right now either.  But I do think giving silly names to detectors you have no intention of buying is a bit childish.  Should we call the Deus II the Dump2?  LOL  (Just messing with ya)

The thing that I like on the Deus 2 is the x-y axis and waterproof depth. Is it that bad on gold nuggets?
