I presume your Equinox handles those conditions better but if it is "silent search" in multi-tones it should also be silent search in 50-tones.  However, if your Equinox still has noise issues under those conditions, then I can understand that having 2 or 5-tone chatter might be less audibly fatiguing than 50-tone chatter, so on that basis I understand what you are saying.

I too often detect in high emi/high mineralized conditons.  And, as a result, I have actually moved away from tone ID and now prefer the Pitch audio (with separate ferrous tones for targets below the ferrous discrimination breakpoint) provided by my Deus 2.  That basically turns my machine into a ferrous/non-ferrous dig machine but with some additional target information provided by the pitch audio vice a discrete tone (the downside is that I rely more heavily on visual target ID).  My understanding is that M-core will have a similar Pitch audio option for all modes (currently Nox only has pitch like audio in Gold mode).  Looking forward to that feature.  Combined with target trace to visually show ferrous targets and silent ferrous discrimination, it might actually surpass D2 in functionality.

Equinox does great here. I moved most modes to 5 tones and lower volume on what I feel is irritating.

Theoretically, if you are discriminating ferrous and have the machine properly ground balanced, then even in 50 tones it will still be silent until you get a target.

Where I live the soil is pretty hot and emi is bad. I bough a Simplex+ a couple years ago and had to get rid of it, as it couldn’t handle the soil and emi here. (Same with the MX Sport).

I think you'd be surprised how useful Target Trace is, it's fantastic on the CTX and that's a decade old detector now so I can only hope they've improved it even further.  In my soils here Multi-IQ was brilliant for ID stability and depth and with them hinting the Manticore has some depth advantages and more stable ID's than the Nox I'm expecting really good things with it's version of Target Trace.

I like just about everything about the Manticore, with the only concern I have being the battery life, especially if I go prospecting with it, it just won't last the full day.  I might be able to tweak it up a bit to last longer, disable the back light and so on to give it a bit more juice, perhaps plug it into a USB power bank while I stop for lunch.   Higher frequencies like used prospecting tend to use less battery power too.

They're hinting at better EMI immunity too, although I've seen no evidence of that yet, in all the videos I've seen it's behaved similar to how the Nox would in that situation I think, but time will tell.

If you are capable of using your Nox with 50 tones, you already have target trace, your brain just has to decipher it and some people are capable of doing that, for me I can't go past 5 tones so I benefit greatly from the visuals target trace provides. 🙂

I thought the Nox was near the perfect machine with the build quality being it's only downfall.  It got to the point with mine the only ML parts were the pod and the coil, and not always even the coil so I avoided much of the problems.  That and I just wasn't brave enough to use it in water much.    The Manticore designers took notice of the Nox faults, aren't shy of admitting them in the Manticore videos and have said it won't have those problems, so for me, it might be my perfect VLF.

50 tones are a bit too much for me. It’s like a hot rod rumbling as it idles, then when you get a target, it’s like the hot rod engine revs up. For me, it’s distracting. I like to silent search until I get a target.

For me I would have liked the option to be able to turn off the 2d mapping definitely not a fan.

That’s an interesting idea. A GPS coordinate readout could have been an alternate switchover, but we would pay over $2000 for it I would assume.

The paragraph above, that I put in bolded, italicized, enlarged, red text, is -- in my opinion, marketing mumbo-jumbo.  While most of it is largely "true," you really have to read it carefully, as the truth is "in there," but "obfuscated."  The one thing that I believe is NOT true -- and it's why I say it's marketing nonsense, is the part that said, essentially, "while the CTX could plot targets, the Manticore 'takes it to the next level,' by giving the target SHAPE."  The implication there is that the Manticore is doing something that the CTX could not, and this is simply not true.

The bottom line, as I've said a million times, is that the target shape is only INDIRECTLY related to the target.  And I strongly believe that whatever the Manticore can do, in terms of "shape," is the same thing the CTX would do.  A good, round, consistently ID-ing target would show up as a small round blob, on the CTX 2-D screen, just as it will on the Manticore 2-D screen.  Likewise, an irony, elongated, bouncy ID-ing target would show up non-round, more like an elongated smear in many cases, ON EITHER UNIT.  So, THIS IS NOTHING NEW!

That's not to say that the Manticore screen may not be higher-resolution, thus possibly allowing "tighter" circles to be drawn.  And also, of course, the more accurate the ID algorithms are on a unit, the more "small" and "round" a coin or ring will show up.  So, if the Manticore has a more "precise" ID algorithm than the CTX, then the shapes may be "prettier" on a round object (again, those "round" shapes being reflective of the very consistent, non-varying ID...such that plotting multiple snapshots of the x,y ID numbers on an x,y coordinate system would result in a very small/round "dot").

But, my point here is -- DO NOT BE FOOLED into thinking the Manticore is taking any sort of "reading" that would allow a "direct" plot of the outline of the shape of any given target.  The shape of the plot is DIRECTLY related only to the "bounce" or "change" in VDI (or lack thereof) at each sampling interval, and only INDIRECTLY related the shape of the object...

    Steve

I never thought it would show shapes, it places the metallic properties in different places, but maybe that’s just a linear crossover from the sound differences. Which, if you’re like me with hearing issues(from the military), it is a nice visual addition, plus the vibration on handle! I couldn’t resist, so I pre-ordered one.

Yup!  I'm excited for the Manticore to ship.  It's going to be awesome.

In the video the rep kind of side-stepped the waterproof leakage issue. She just said it is more rugged. So, that would indicate that the equinox was not rugged enough. If you look at a video from gigmaster on YouTube, he shows around the charging port as a weak area that leaks. So, ruggedness may fix the issue?

If you go to youtube and do a search, minelab+manticore, then open Filters (above the vids on the left side) and select, Sort By / Upload Date; it will bring up that video and all the others pertaining to the Manticore.  Bookmark the page after you have entered those parameters and you can easily check if any new Manticore videos have been uploaded.

    Good tip.

This video shows iron and a coin waved in front of the coil. The iron is discriminated, and the coin is not. Even though the iron is rejected it still shows both on the screen, which is pretty cool.

I'm not sure I would think of the Manticore as a new model detector since it takes the basic Equinox physical system and improved the flaws of that system like the coil ears, arm rest, water leaks and lack of robust material strength.  Then it takes the good features of the Equinox and adds some useful features of the CTX then improves upon those features.

So, even though Minelab says it was built from the ground up, it is actually the next generation of the Equinox.  The Equinox was the initial iteration with a few flaws.  I would be very surprised to find a major flaw in the Manticore due to oversite.  The Manticore IS the "flaws fixed" second generation.

    Hopefully…and then some!

I think Gerry's who is a sponsor here is probably a good place.  Before I knew about Gerry and since I can't take advantage of the military discount, I placed an order with a place that offers no sales tax out of state and a few goodies to go along with the Manticore.  I don't think I should say the name here but they are on the first page if you google "buy minelab manticore".

I looked at Modern Detectors. They don’t give any freebies with military discount. I think the first wave will go to the biggest detector dealers.

I bet 3/4 of WM 80's never seen more then 1 charge.  I'd use mine more if they made a screw in adaptor for 1/4 inch.

I used my ML-80 headphones once after I bought the Equinox 800. A 2 years later I decided to use them, but they were dead. I put them on a charger overnight and they didn't charge, and I tried 3 more times, but they wouldn't work. They worked when on the charger but not off the charger. I called Minelab USA and told them that I used them one time. Apparently, my warranty ran out, so they said they could sell me a new pair for $130. I told them, no thank you!

I opened the headphones up and found that the battery had burst. I ordered a battery of the same type and amp hours off of Ebay. I replaced the battery, and they work now.  So Phrunt, keep checking your extra ML-80's.

According to a reliable source (hint:  his initials are SH), the only difference between Gold 1 and Gold 2 on the Equinox were settings which you could change (to match each other, if you so desired).

You'll still have 40 kHz single frequency options, just like on the Equinox 800.  But whether SF or MF, there appear to be more settings options on the Manticore than on the Equinox.  Most serious gold detectorists like to find their own best settings, at least that's my experience.

You don't hear too many (knowledgeable) people complaining about the Equinox 800's gold performance, and ML may be saving improvements to that for a new (dedicated gold) IB/VLF.

IMO, Lawrie mis-spoke on one of the videos when he said something about the Manticore being better (in every way was my interpretation) than the Equinox.  I think he should have said "as good or better".  Also IMO, the Equinox was undervalued for the price when it was released early 2018.  I suppose we could expect from now on they will over-deliver (for the price) as they did then, but I don't think that is a realistic expectation for a capitalistic entity.

What I understood from ML, is that Gold 1 and Gold 2 had different algorithms to deal with the different soil types. Therefore, why would you want to match the two? I found gold 1 worked better than gold 2 for my area. Old arguments, I know!

Since this is the Detector Prospector forum…..there is one Gold mode. The selectable single frequencies seem to be the same. The chief engineer did say more than once that Multi IQ+ uses higher frequencies than Multi IQ.

One gold mode? You would think that something coming out of Australia would have more emphases on gold programming options. Now the question is, how much better it will be than the Equinox 800 for gold detection?

  13.    I watched a YouTube video demonstration, it was somewhere in Europe, and these different people had a turn at searching/detecting with the Manticore across an open field. They were swinging so fast, it looked like they were trying to get to the train before it left. The coil was about 3-5 inches above the ground and no overlapping at all. It looked kind of hilarious. I swing about 2-3 seconds in one direction. These guys were about 1.5 seconds in both directions. I hope a person doesn't have to swing the Manticore that fast to use it properly.

American’s are competitive and a new latest greatest detector makes us believe that we’ll have that competitive edge, so we go for it! Plus, new gadgets are exciting! But, $4000 exciting? I don’t think I can keep up. I don’t think that I have found enough to cover the detectors that I now have! 🤔 I’ll sit tight for awhile and wait for feedbacks.

Do you really want this answer rled2005?

Well, here goes.  The manual for the Equinox 800 states that the Radio Frequency Power (should be the power to the coil) is less than 30 dBm.  30 dBm converts to the equivalent of 1000 MiiiWatts or 1 Watt.  So, if the Manticore is 50% more powerful than the Equinox that would equate to 1500 MiliWatts or 1.5 Watts.

I believe radio transmitters such as a CB radio are required to transmit no more that 5 Watts of power.  So, the Manticore is still using much less energy than a CB radio.

Yes, I was just curious about any false claims. The FCC restricts the power output of any public transmitter to 5 watts RMS. Regulated broadcast stations have different guidelines.

So, would the Manticore battery have about 3/4 operation time as compared to the Equinox?

I’m looking forward to this new model and finding out how good it really is.  My Staff members and I will be doing our part using it in a variety of states, terrains, hunting styles and situations so we can come up with our own conclusions of how it stacks up to the competition.  We also provide this hard earned and sometime long hours of use.. info to our customers to help them make the right choice for their next detector investment.

Here's a bone for you all who already own the EQUINOX and waterproof headphones.  YES they will work on the Manticore as well.

Not many dealers are as well rounded in a variety of metal detecting hunts of different treasures as my Field Experts.  We’re also the same guys who’s been offering “Metal Detector Basics” for the new and “Advanced Gold Detector Training” for the Nugget Hunters for the last 25 yrs.  I’m pleased to announce we’ll be doing the same with the Manticore and those customers who purchase from us.  Be sure to view my website Calendar of Events right after the New Year to see what options we provide for you in 2023.

And again, Gerry’s Detectors will be offering the 15% Military Discount to all active and prior US Military.  As a Veteran myself, I feel privileged to honor and help those who have served, to get the next detector in your hands.  You earned it and so might as well take part in the additional savings.

Here’s some of what we have learned so far.

    Overview

    • MANTICORE with Multi-IQ+ is the most powerful, fastest, and precise metal detector in Minelab’s history.   Interestingly, they did not say it’s equal to the Equinox, E-Trac or even CTX-3030.  Boy that’s a pretty bold statement, but as always Minelab has been able to back it up, so I expect nothing less.
    • The heart of MANTICORE is its super-charged Simultaneous Multi-Frequency (MULTI-IQ+) engine. This feat of innovation generates an incredible 50% power increase over the best-selling detector series of all time: EQUINOX.  I wonder how much depth increase (if any) that will equate to?
    • When combined with advanced 2D Target Identification (ID) and rich audio options, the detectorist has every bit of vital information arriving at their eyes and ears. I’m thinking more to the ID system of the very popular E-Trac and CTX 3030, which I missed on the Equinox.
    • MANTICORE is an unrivalled detecting experience that pushes the boundaries of detecting to deliver more power, more depth, and more finds.  Yet to be confirmed, but with Minelab Engineering track record, I’m sure it’s just a matter of time, maybe even days/or weeks?

I’ve been warned that the detector release could be similar to that of the Equinox series.  Those units came into the US in small allotments and then were divided amongst the dealers and how many we ordered.  I assure you and just like with the Equinox rollout, I should be able to get more units to my customers faster than many others.  Getting on my Pre Order List should be your priority so be sure to email me at gerrys1det@gmail.com  No money down needed at this time.

So it looks as if Minelab has taken some features from 3 of their top selling/performing VLF type detectors (E-Trac, CTX 3030, Equinox) and combined them with new technologies and improvements for the ultimate do it all detector.  From someone who has had fantastic results and success with all 3 of those models and most recently the Equinox, I’m extremely excited.  Just take a quick peak of Equinox treasures I shared in the few pics, just to give you folks an idea of what I’m expecting and then some.1MEQA.thumb.jpg.fb1ea152c44d8cdca93f7d578af8d449.jpg1MEQB.thumb.jpg.e20b617c42dde7490e255a45a49feecf.jpg1MEQC.thumb.jpg.0d72c2203f33673a314247ab6e8e79db.jpg1MEQD.thumb.jpg.8252cda2e182bf6c3e3b2fcb5008971f.jpg1MEQE.jpg.a2de87126a2da5482bae80f48087c5b4.jpg1MEQF.thumb.jpg.7fc5be99d39c68fd678586a2ebb0d05f.jpg1MEQG.thumb.jpg.94173dd3130278fa76abe900ad92f7c2.jpg1MEQH.thumb.JPG.4a8e1091e2e9076efb6249378b3462f8.JPG1MEQI.thumb.jpg.a8aa49883cab438e8e0778c1e00c0cfd.jpg1MEQJ.thumb.jpg.e1392a2b136965768046477a12da93f2.jpg1MEQK.jpg.eef40e82d1d210b2a28076a7b8fcdac2.jpg

Some of my eye/ear catching from above info we've been provided so far....

    - VIBRATION Mode built into the handle.  I actually look forward to this feature and know of a few folks who will be very happy.  They have taken this from the pinpointers and I feel it’s a nice bonus to have.  Hopefully the rest of you enjoy it as much.

    - 2.9 pounds is the advertised weight.  Heck that’s fantastic as it’s now even lighter than my Equinox.  I’m a big fan of carbon fiber as well and glad to see they went this way for the Manticore.  No more issues for us guys in the salt water for hours at a time.

    - Coil size selection.  I’m a big fan of the small 6” round for the EQ and CTX and even bigger fan of the small 6” Ellip found on my VLF type gold detectors.  Minelab says a new 8 x 5.5” semi ellip.  Pretty excited for this one as many of us like the ellip and the heel/toe pin pointing and into rocks/brush and other tight areas.  I’d hope CoilTek is working on a smaller coil as well as a 15” round for ultimate depth.

Did I mention that we just don't sell detectors, we live with them?

Looking forward to earning your business and helping you become successful.

    Thanks, Gerry

Dave - I hope to get a bunch.  Heck, even if they only send me a small partial of my order, that will cover those on my list.  My list is not as big as last time and I wonder if it's the Economy?  As for the smaller coil.  I was told all accessory coils will come later as they are mainly working to get the detectors out 1st.  This is pretty standard on new release detectors.

Simon - You cheap Mongrel,🤣 trying to get an extra coil out of them.  This coming from a guy who has purchased more detectors than 95% of the people I know.  Yes it would be great if they did in fact offer it as "Introductory Sale".  But you and I know, they could have offered it for $1999 and I think many would purchase it anyway.  Seems the $1600 price point is right on with the Deus-II though and that seems to be it's competition.

Mitchel - Well most certainly.  After all "It's a Minelab Beast".😆

Has anyone asked if the Equinox coils will work on the Manticore?

Right now if I was going to spend that money I think I’d get a Tarsacci.  MDT 8000.

Not saying the manticore won’t be a excellent detector, I’d like to see some of them out in the field, live digs and such first.

I think I'll be aiming more towards the Garrett Axiom!
