I am brand new to metal detecting.

    TechGuy,

I am also very new to this and have found very valuable information from this group.

In the short amount of time with my new 800 I have been able to find a lot of things I never thought I ever would have.

I give all the credit to the fine people of  this forum.

Several have given you some of the best tips to try to locate your missing item that you want to find and I surely would do as they suggest.

Steve and GB have given you a way to locate what you are looking for and they love taking the time to help if you are willing to help yourself in learning the detector.

Should that fail you could get a black light and search at night and the diamond will give off a prizim effect when the light hits it. I found that at night I could find diamonds better with the light a little easier.

But remember that you must have patience with learning this detector as it will locate things that others will not find.

  2. I went out again for a couple of hours today (Saturday) and out of nowhere I get a good solid signal and dug up a silver charm pendant about the size of a quarter.

I walked over to my wife that had to go with me as she thinks when I get out I have someone else with me, and I showed the piece to her. She thought it was a quarter at first until I cleaned it a little.

The absolute crazy part of it was what it said.

Peace was on one side and the back side said "Good Luck Tim" .

The real kicker is the fact that my name is Tim.

    See the attached pictures.

    You are killing it.  Congrats!

When the dime showed up why did the numbers keep jumping from around 21 to 36 all the time?

Could it have sensed the dime on edge and would that be something I look for all the time?

I know that I have been lucky to find the 1903 Indian Head a few weeks ago and now this 1902 dime. They were both at the same park that several people have gone through several times and I feel that I just got lucky.

I guess you'll have to decide if it's worth putting you foot down and just going and doing your thing.

What she doesn't know won't hurt me.

When she got Lyme disease a few years back she lost it mentally and has never gotten any better.

I would hate to unleash her upon the world and see her get hurt.

You must be fairly young. Give it 15 years and she'll be glad you have hobbies to get you out of the house.

I am 62 and she is 65. After 25 years together all she wants me to do is to wait on her hand and foot.

When I want to do something she tells me a list of things she needs done first, and then it is to late for me to do anything.

I told her I was going to go ginseng hunting on Saturday and she now tells me that she wants to go to the lake.

I don't know why she wants to go because she can't walk more than 50 yards at a time.

Last year I went ginseng hunting for the first time and was able to dig almost 5 pounds (dried weight ) over the course of 2 months. She spent the money.

  6. What a day it has been, Working and then taking a break for an hour so I had to do a little hunting with the 800.

Today I went back to a local park just to kill a little bit of time before I had to go to meet someone.

I pulled into the park at about 4 pm and grabbed the 800.

Turned it on and went to Park 1 with factory setting, did noise cancel, and started swinging.

The first 3 hits were all aluminum and the 4th was a bolt from who knows what.

The 4th hole made a noise that I had never heard before, a chatter and the ID number changed from a strong 36 to a 21 during the noise.

I knelt down to start digging as the depth showed 3 arrows and I proceeded slowly to reach whatever was down there.

Because of the chatter I did not truly know what to expect and moved the dirt slowly as to find the reason for the chatter.

To my surprise I noticed an edge of something in the dirt, and I pulled more dirt from the sides of the edge so I could get a grip on it.

I pulled it out of the ground and to my surprise it was a 1902 dime, it had seen better days but it was still a sight to see.

I then hit a area where someone must of lost all of his change and someone else's at the same time.

The more I pulled off the ground from under the grass, the more my pin pointer detected.

I could not find a place to set the pin pointer without it going off. It took about 15 minutes to pick out the coins from the grass.

I looked at the time and had to leave while having so much fun, but had to get back to work.

All the coins in the picture ranged from 1902 to 2018.

I think I am getting the hang of this detecting thing and can't wait to get out again. Just don't tell my wife because she gets mad.

(New ivory is illegal to own, as I'm sure most here know.)

Most of the time it is, however if it is purchased from a native from Alaska it is still legal, however make sure it is not bone.

I have friends from Alaska and they have made several pieces for me all handcrafted and beautiful.

The rest of the necklace would be hard for it to be made in Alaska to my knowledge.

  8. When I was looking to purchase a new detector, and after all the research I did, I decided on the Equinox 800 because it was more versatile for all around use. I am slowly learning this new detector, but with that said it is like my guns. You would have to pry it from my cold dead hands first.

The people here can help you a lot with the 800 and are very knowledgeable about all things detector.

How do you find a good jewelry store?

Instead of asking where the item is from, ask for an appraisal and put it on them to tell you where it is from. Above all do not tell them that you found it.

I did a little more searching and think that it might be Indian, Aztec, or even Mayan.

They all used similar stones and arrangements on this item.

Let me know if you find out, I think it is a interesting item that you found.

  10. Here is a necklace that I found on Amazon and it looks like the same bear. There is a color difference, but with that said I believe that it is something made in China. It can come in several different styles and they all come from the same manufacture.

The cost on these are about $50.00 ( US ).

    Still a great find.

  11. Due to the mud and water I was not able to get back into the area to search. The contractors laid 8 inches of rock and used a steam roller over to pack everything. They now tell me that they are pouring concrete tomorrow and I can not dig in it.

I guess there will be other sites for me to hunt in.

I am slowly learning this 800 and I just need to get better and find better items.

Thanks to everyone that has given suggestions unlike my wife suggesting that I go to ****.

I've since looked and looked at it and I'm impressed with the design and workmanship.

Is the bear made of plastic, bone, or ivory?

Plastic is usually from cruise ships, bone is the Alaska native way, and ivory is usually Asian. Some of the Asian bears are for fertility, so keep it away from the wife.

  13. To learn my 800 I have only used the speakers because the headphones that came with it causes to much sweat build up in my ears. I don't like all that moisture and it is distracting to me.

Once I learn more about what I am doing then I will find earphones that don't make my ears sweat so much.

Hope their warranty takes care of the problem.

The side stones are diamonds according to my tester. The middle stones have a more purple hue to them when light is passed through.

It looks like amethyst is what you have, it is also my birth stone and have seen it hundreds of times.

I almost purchased a ring very similar to it back in the 70's.

    Great find

  15. Phrunt,

Be here around 9:30 and you can join me, it only takes a few hours for you to get here.

If I wasn't so tired right now I would be looking, but I mowed for 5 1/2 hours before I went there today. I also helped a friend take down a large oak tree for firewood and that by itself was hard enough.

When I was in my 20's I could go for days before getting any sleep, but I am over 60 now and it seems that hard work just kills me anymore.
