  1. I was wondering what you serious “Water” hunters use to weigh down your coils.  Someone once suggested taking a “tube” sock, filling it with sand, tying it in a circle (like an ankle weight) and sliding in over your lower rod having it lay on the coil.

I’ve also seen bandanas (to keep you cool) with Silica Gel sewed in to them.  They absorb the water and expand making them heavier than they are dry. I wonder if you had enough in there, would that work also?

    Thanks!

  2. Here’s a topic for all you “Rocket Scientists” out there (and anyone else who’d like to chime in).

I was having a discussion with another dealer.  He felt that single frequency worked better because there’s a certain amount of performance loss with Multi.  I was always of the opinion that Multi-Frequency was the best for most types of Metal Detecting.  It allows you to hit ALL the targets that react better to certain kHz.

Here’s an example from another hobby of mine (most of us have more than one).  I shoot muzzle loading guns.  The “Round Ball” type projectile that was used for hundreds of years performs best when shot out of a rifled barrel with a slow twist.  Twist refers to the how many inches of flight it (the projectile) takes to make one revolution.  The conical bullet came out during the Civil War and requires a faster twist.  For modern muzzle loading rifles a slow twist would be 1 turn in 56, 60, 66, 70, etc. inches. For conicals, 32, 28, 24, etc. inches.  In the 70s, one company came up with the idea of a “Compromise” twist; 1 tun in 48”.  That way you only have to buy one gun.  You can use Round Balls for Target shooting and Conicals for hunting.  It shoots both “well”.

Having said all that, does the Single Frequency work better than the Multi?  Is there any kind of lack of performance or trade off having them (kHz) work simultaneously?

    Thanks!

  3. I was on my way back from a detecting trip near Winnemucca.  I stopped in at Armadillo in Grants Pass, Oregon and saw this hanging on the wall.  Apparently, there are only three in existence.  This one belongs to Sam.  From what I understand, she received this for being the top salesperson in the company with this model.

I think this would have been a way better color than the original black!

  4. I actually had expected (hoped?) that once they got the MX Sport right that they would soon be moving some of their other machines into that same chassis.  I would rather have had the TDI in that form with multiple coils than them just modifying their Beach machine.

I loved the Treasuremaster.  It had what I considered to be features you’d find in a more expensive unit for only $299.

I suppose I can understand the Weatherproof versus Waterproof idea saving the customer $100 if he wasn’t going to submerge it.

They could not seem to get away from the black metal boxes.  They purposely kept the MXT Pro and GMT around for those who prefer knobs and switches.

I really hope someone buys the company whole and decides to build upon the good technology that’s there.  I really believe the right team could surely turn Whites around and make it great again.

  5. Sadly, I placed my last order on Wednesday.  The factory was open to dealers for one day only. I wanted the GMX Sport but they were sold out so I ordered the 24K with the 6” round Concentric and 10” DD Elliptical coils with covers. I wanted the 4x6 but they didn’t have any. I think they should have made Friday the last day. We received the email in the morning and only had until 3:00 p.m. to get our orders in.

In my conversation with Jack, he mentioned that there may be a sale in the works but couldn't tell me anymore than that.  He had to cut our conversation short so that he could get all the orders out that day!

Too bad the employees and some Distributors/Dealers couldn't come up with the funds to buy it.

  6. I probably wasn’t very clear myself.  I’m not really speaking of ground noise or falsing, although it could be that.

We all know that rusty iron can still be seen by the detector, even with Iron Mask turned on.  The rust changes the conductivity of the metal; usually giving a variety of VDI readings.  While using the 6” coil, I hear more of these and other marginal targets that are on the edge of the discrimination points, than I do with the 11”.  In other words, the discrimination seems to work better on the bigger coil.  As a result, it runs quieter.  I know smaller coils are more sensitive than larger.  So, maybe it just the “Nature of the Beast” with these types of targets.

I was just wondering if everyone else was experiencing the same thing when switching to the 6”.

BTW, what Sensitivity levels are some of you running on your 6”?  Do you find the need to turn it down like I do?

  7. I sent this to White's today and got a response.  A friend of mine thought that some of the "mods" may have been incorporated in the new model.

    Hi Jack:

I was wondering whether there are any internal differences between the TDI SL and the TDI SL High-Q.  In other words, did White's change anything electronically?

    Thanks!

    Hi Walt

The two detectors are the same inside

    Thanks

    That is a good thought.

It turned out to be a Dual Field coil.  I suppose you could call it an Elliptical but I think I would have preferred one based on their Eclipse 1400 coil size and design.

    Thanks!

I need to frequently switch from right to left hand .

My buddy Joe does that.  Otherwise he'd be done in two hours!

With the 6 inch, I don't have to.  I could hunt all day.  Probably would take me that long to cover one area with that small coil, anyway.  😆

    Thanks!

I suffer with my shoulder too which is why I use the pro swing harness. I use the15" coil 99% of the time and I'm usually out 6-7 hrs each time

Never been a big fan of the bungees although I use one on my gas powered weed trimmer.  Don't like being tethered to my detector.  Wired head phones were bad enough.

Thanks for the suggestion, though!  You'd need one for that length of time.  I'm usually good for 3 or 4 hours.

I lobbied for a solid elliptical early on to no result unfortunately. It seemed like a no-brainer to me since the housing already existed and it is a shame it’s never happened ThIs coil feels great on the arm, and the solid design slides smoothly over stubble that hangs up the other coils. It would be great both for gold prospectors and U.K. style hunting of fields in stubble.

So, how well does it work, Steve?

    Thanks!

Why don’t you start at the lowest level on the sensitivity and work your way up from there. Find a clean spot and GB it  If between those two it don’t work turn GB off .

All I can say after this see if the same try on some other ground.

PS  Just before you throw the whole thing in the trash I’ll send you the money for shipping to me . haha

    Thanks Chuck.  I will.

My biggest fear is I'm already losing depth because of the coil size.  I'm afraid of losing even more by turning the Sensitivity down too far.

I'm going to some Southern California mountains with Jim.  😊

San Gabriel (East Fork) or San Bernardino (Holcombe Valley, Big Bear)?

Great find!  BTW, I was born in Santa Monica.  It's still one of my favorite beaches to hunt.

    Thanks!
