  1. I have a former neighbor from my childhood ask my advice on a detector.  He lives in Daytona Beach.  He decided on the Simplex but as hard as I tried, didn't want to spend the extra money for the package with wireless headphones which my distributor has in stock and can dropship.  They're out of the model without HPs until the next container comes in.

He's only about an hour from Kellyco so I had him contact them.  They told him he needed a dedicated beach and surf machine.  The biggest problem with most multi-purpose detectors is they cancel out the salt but if there's heavy black sand deposits like after a storm, a single frequency VLF won't work without lowering the sensitivity and raising the coil.  Even that's not guaranteed.  I used to live in Southern California and under those conditions, you need a Multi-frequency or PI unit otherwise, you ain't hunting!

It's always been my understanding that Florida beaches don't have the mineralization that we do on the West coast.  Why wouldn't he be able to use the Simplex there?

    TIA!

I agree hearing about how Cheaply the Nox800 is.

But wondering if there will be a replacement soon with the Anfibio?

I am sure the Legend is a good detector and a good price but would like to see if a Anfibio will be introduced soon?..............JT

The Anfibio 14 and 19 kHz have been discontinued.  They are keeping the Multi-frequency model but it is not simultaneous MF like the Legend.  I don't know why they didn't just modify the Anfibio rather than develop a whole new machine that closely resembles the Equinox.

  3. I received this from my Distributor recently:

    “Dear Valued Distributors and Dealers,

As planned, we have sent the test samples to many people around the world earlier this month and got some great feedbacks.

We are currently in the process of updating the unit based on these feedbacks.

We, just like you, would love to get it out sooner than later.

However, we also know that putting the best product possible in the user’s hands MUST be the priority for all of us.

We are hoping to start shipping in January with no confirmed date at this point.  As I get more info from the team, I will keep you updated.

    Thank you for your understanding.

    HAVE A LEGENDARY 2022!

    Dilek Gonulay

    Director, Sales & Marketing”

I remember asking them a couple of weeks ago why Nokta Makro didn’t make a pile of detectors and then do the announcement.  Their reply was “to alert those considering a new machine, of their latest offering”.  From what I remember, they ALL do this.  However, if the only difference is going to be in the software, based on testing out in the field, then they could have released the Legend and then had an update shortly afterward.  Just saying.  Would it look good? Maybe not.  You’d probably have people complaining that they should have waited until the Field Tests were done.  You can’t please everyone!

I just hope it arrives before my trip to Southern California at the end of January.  I’d like to try it on the beach.

    Thanks!

I'd love to hear from someone who's bought this detector and can give a bit of a review on it, it seems like it'd do the job well.  I wonder if it has bump sensitive coils.

I'm hoping to take it to Northern & Southern California towards the end of next month for a test run.  I'll post my thoughts afterward.

    Thanks!

Nokta Makro probably just obsoleted all their other detectors with the Legend. I can see owning a Simplex at $254 but why would you buy an Anfibio $765 or Kruzer at $635 when you probably have all the features of those 2 packed into the Legend Pro and then some at $765. I had a multi Kruzer and only ever used 3 and 4 tone modes.

I received this a few days ago from my Distributor:

KRUZER & MULTI KRUZER WILL COME TO END OF LIFE AS OF DECEMBER 31st! GOLD KRUZER WILL STAY IN THE LINE UP!!!

ANFIBIO 14 AND 19 WILL ALSO BE DISCONTINUED AS OF DECEMBER 31st BUT ANFIBIO MULTI WILL STAY IN THE PRODUCT LINE-UP.

    Thanks!

Ken, Can't confirm this without the manual or further clarification from NM, but I am pretty sure it does not have 3 "salt" mode ranges for ground balance. Dilek was not entirely clear on her live launch presentation but Legend  appears to basically enable you to select from one of 2 SMF signal processing profiles when in beach mode - wet or dry .  This is similar to Equinox in that regard.  Basically, one more Multi Salt mode than Apex.

I believe Dilek mentioned 2 for Beach mode in the Launch video.

"Now all the main detector manufacturers have a full real multi frequency machine on the market so we as users are in a pretty good place and I can't wait to see the battle of the manufacturers and how this goes over the coming year or two."

Are you including Fisher and the CX-21?  Did they come out with something I'm not aware of?

    Thanks!

Would anyone like to comment on the possibility of using underwater headphones with the Nokta Legend? I didn't see any mention of a headphone jack in the specs..?

    Thanks,

    Rick

She did mention it in the broadcast.  Something to the effect of, "You'll have to use wired headphones for diving as wireless doesn't work well underwater".

I don't like the coils, 11" & 6". I'm sure there will be more to come. I want to see an 8" or 9" coil standard coil for it. It seems like they are all standard 11" coils.

I want to hear it. What are harmonic sounds? I'm not a fan of the sounds on the other brand. Maybe the Legend will have more adjustments to get the sound to your liking.

Not a lot of info on it yet. Needs more videos. Price seems good.

Dilek said during the Q&A at the end of the broadcast that there will be a 13" DD also.

The Garrett blue phones have plenty of volume built in. They are a bit too loud on land but when the earcups fill with water then the audio is suppressed somewhat. Current Amphibian II phones dispensed with the volume control knobs as they were a point of failure. I would pick the Garrett phones over the Amphibians…..they are much cheaper and better constructed (I have opened up both of these phones and the Garrett was better constructed as far as the piezo epoxy and wiring goes). Amphibians are “Made in China”……they hid that label underneath the headband when you slide it out for adjustment. I would guess the Garrett’s might still be made in the USA.

    Hope this helps,

    Tony

Thanks Tony!  That saves me about $150 as I already have the blue ones.

If you have no volume control on your detector (most Garrett detectors do have a volume control) then the lack of volume control on machines like the Infinium can be an issue above water, as being too loud. I solved this by just hanging them around my neck instead, loud enough to hear, but not blow my brains out.

Thanks, Steve.  That's what I suspected.  I know they're REALLY loud above water.  I figured that was so you could hear sufficiently under water.

I have a pair of Garrett headphones with volume control for land use.

I pulled out pounds of modern nails from trees around a lake in the Olympics when I was a backcountry ranger there.  While bucking some logs, we also found old square nails imbedded deep when the tree grew around them. That lake was a favorite campsite for many generations.  Good idea using a detector for them, it wouldn’t be good breaking a bandsaw blade on your mill! Klunker is right, the nails will be only head high unless the tree was fallen already.

The logs are in piles.  He's going to take them one at a time and roll them as he checks them.

He only wants to detect 16 feet up from the bottom cut.  For some reason he wants it to penetrate 12".  I think 9" is good.

    Thanks!

I have detected for metal in thousands of logs. The best I have found is a danged old Fisher bold bug. It's light, inexpensive, batteries are cheap and after decades it has never failed. It's depth is better in wood than in the ground so you will be amazed at how deep you will be chopping out nails. HINT-do your detecting while the log in still on the stump. Unless there were overhead wires through the logging site, rarely will you find metal above what you can reach above you with the Gold Bug.

And tell your customer not to get distracted looking for gold. He has work to get done!

    Which model, Gold Bug?

    Thanks!

1 foot is really deep for a metal target being in a log. Is he worried about the logs being spiked by vandals, or is he looking for old bullets or square nails imbedded in them over time? How big are the targets?

Nails mostly.  He doesn't want anything that could ruin the saw.  I was thinking that nails would be in the first 9" anyway.

    Thanks!

  15. I have a customer with some logs that are about 30” to 36” in diameter.  He’s looking for a metal detector that would shoot about a foot into the wood.  (I tried a TDI SL with a 14” x 9” Elliptical and it only went 9”.)

What detector and coil combo manufactured today would work? The targets are mostly iron.

    Thanks!

    Walt

P.S: He was hoping to not have to spend too much as this may be a one time thing for this batch of logs.

  16. I also want to give a shout out to Carl!  Thank you for your insights and opinions.  I wasn't sure if you'd chime in, being so close to the topic.

Phrunt, what I meant was when a "NEW COMER" asks 10 old time prospectors, 8 will reply Gold Bug 2.  I was talking about old guys that use a metal detector as a secondary mining method i.e.: checking dry wash tailing piles, bottoms of dig holes, etc.  The loyalty not being with those recommending as much as the newbie listening to them and buying the GB2.  I always love your writings as well my friend!

That is a nice simple little unit.   Wonder where the iron break is set in relation to the Gold Racer/Gold Kruzer.   Wonder why I would want to pick it over the Gold Kruzer?

You wouldn't.  I don't believe this is a replacement for current Nokta Makro products.  It looks to be a SERIOUS competitor to the Minelab Gold Monster 1000.

  18. I know this doesn’t pertain to the original topic but this subject that was touched upon after White’s closed their doors; Is First Texas next?

“Most people who say they want waterproof will never set foot in water.” “Built in updates lend to hacking.” “Wireless headphones are not the best performance option.” On and on. The idea that many of our asks are unnecessary or extraneous is pervasive.”

I may never set foot in the water but like the ability to do so without having to purchase a separate machine, especially a Gold Prospecting model I may accidentally drop in the drink (which I have done!).

These “unnecessary or extraneous” features are becoming Industry Standards which American Companies seem to be having a hard time incorporating into their offerings.  For me, Wireless Headphones are a God send.  As far as software updates are concerned, I remember back in the day when White’s made an improvement on one of their machines, you could send it in and they’d do the upgrade for a small nominal fee.  Minelab on the other hand, would make you buy the newer model of Explorer rather than modify your old one to match it, if you wanted the latest and greatest.

“Employees move on, so in the case of some detectors like the older Fishers are the people who wrote the code even there? are they capable of modifying the code to modernize the detector?  Maybe they didn't keep up with the times themselves.”

Last time I checked; Dave Johnson who was responsible for the Gold Bug, GB2 and CZ series, is their Chief design Engineer.  Am I wrong?  Did he leave?

“I don't think doing this is beyond them but they just took the lazy way out once again and just released a paint job of it so nobody is inspired to buy it, it just continues the model if parts were no longer available being such an antique detector.”

A GB3 would be great.  The only reason to continue the GB2 is customer loyalty.  Ask 10 old time prospectors which Gold detector is the best and at least 80% of them will reply, "Fisher Gold Bug 2"!

I hate to see another American Company go under.  However, we should keep in mind that Metal Detectors are the only Electronics still made in the USA.  We used to produce TVs, radios, phonographs, etc.  I surmise that in the name of profits, it all went to Asia (Japan was the China of my youth).

Garrett seems to be holding their own.  I wish nothing but the best for FTP and hope they can deliver some of the “wants” the serious detecting community desires!  As mentioned, it would be a shame for them to purchase brands in the medium to high quality and price range only to end up pushing their lower end products.  I’m guessing the only reason for not buying White’s was because they didn’t have the financial resources to do so.
