  1. Very nice video where we can hear and see the MPV3 in the field . And Merrill speaks clearly and slowly I can understand almost all what he says .. 🙂

    However I would not use his procedure consisting of changing temporarily a setting to check something , because it is time consuming and because you can break a button doing this hundred of times . I never change my detector settings in the field , except the volume ..

    I will watch this vid again when I have a little more time , as this MPV3 seems definitely very interesting ...

    Many silver or cooper coins not a problem clear signal. If you cut aluminium you will miss gold and juwelery also lose in separation... bad idea

    MD will be available in US, price under $200

    Looks interesting , what are the specs of the NFD90 ? especially weight , power system ( batteries or lion ) , controls , etc ... Any user manual ?  thx

    what you mean by iron trash? old man-made iron items or natural raw iron?

    Old man-made iron items in mild ground as we have plenty of them over here . Mostly nails . They exist since around -600 around here , then a total of around 2600 years of existence , since the celtic ( -600 to 0 ) , the roman ( 0 to +500 ) , merovingians ( 500 to 700 ) , medieval ( 700 to 1500 ), etc   Not even talking about 1st WW trash with its shell fragments etc

    It is impossible to avoid them here and I am wondering how a GPX would react on them , my experience with a GPX4000 was rather negative as I said.. However I have no experience with a 2 boxes system and I am just curious to know what kind of system would be the more performing on a coin hoard search for example ( say 0,5kg or 1kg coins at 60 to 100 cm depth  )

     don't forget the gpx is built to work in Australia where it has the toughest terrain in the world.

    it depends on what you mean by toughest terrain . In terms of iron trash , Europe has certainly much more iron trash density than in Australia , and is very probably a much more difficult soil in terms of iron separation .

    A specialist told me that the 2 boxes dont pickup up small parts of iron , while a Gpx tends to detect a lot of them .

    Personnaly I have tried a Gpx4000 a few years ago in one of my favorite fields ( infested by irons ) and it was almost unusable because it was detecting too much iron targets ..

    Looking fwd to a side by side comparison test on a big target ( a coin hoard for example ) between the Xtrem and a Gpx ..

  5. Would like to see a video of the NFD in the field too , to have an idea of its audio in field conditions

    From my experience I noticed that it is relatively easy to obtain excellent performances for a detector either for separation or depth on a bed(home ) test .

    But I noticed too that in a few cases that an excellent detector on a bed test was unusable in the field ...

    This probably because the reality is more complex than a bed test , especially for separation tests ...

    Incredible hunt, those are finds we in the USA could only dream of. I agree with RickUK that your detector is finely tuned. Are you using V1.1? What program are you using?

    Much of your trash looks like musket balls and bullet shells, interesting in themselves. Hunting relics or war, or both?

    Sorry to ask so many questions but this is the most fascinating post in quite a while. We don't get to see many finds from over there. 🤔Often for good reasons. 😀

    thanks F350 , I am using the "old" 0.71 version as it still works very well  for me 🙂. I use the SENSITIVE factory prog with very little modifs , I have only changed from 3 to 5 tones and PWM to SQUARE . I dont need to set a  notch as almost all  conductivities can be good targets here , may be except for very low ones like the foils range .   I will try V1.1 later when I have more time available btw .

    90/100 of the trash over here is 1st WW trash . Not 18or 17th musket balls but 1st WW bullets shells . I am not a 1st WW specialist but I have friends who are "militaria" hunters , they hunt 1st WW buckles , buttons , etc ... ( French or German ) . Probably similar to what can be found on your US civil war battlefields ...

    Looks like you are having fun Palzynski. The trees along the edge of the field, are they trimmed like that or do they grow that way naturally?

    thanks Lodge Scent ..

    These trees are poplars , they have been planted may be 7 or 8 years ago . They grow quickly and they like humidity . It is an ideal location for them because there is a brook just behind them ...

    The brook explains the human presence too . Most of the antique sites are located near brooks or streams as water was of course very important for them ..

  8. SECOND OUTING IN THE SAME FIELD :
    -----------------------------------------

    I went back to the same field a few days ago . The weather was much better and I could spend more time in the field . Found 7 coins , 4 worn medieval copper coins ( 15 or 16th century ) , 2 modern coins . And probably the most interesting find , a very small Roman coin ( called "minimi") located with the help of my Quest Xpointer .

    This Roman coin is probably dating from around +400 , the coin size shows that the economical situation was very difficult at this time , probably because of the barbarian invasions coming from the East ( Germany and further .. ) . A little piece of history ...

    For info my D2 settings : SENSITIVE , 5 tones , Square audio - ( version 0.71 )

  9. I went to one of my favorite sites 10 days ago . I have been there since 2002 or 2003 , and I have done dozens of outings here and I am quite surprised to still find targets in this field 20 years after ... The conditions are not ideal because the field is not yet plowed , and it was sometimes difficult to sweep the coil in the cut wheat .

    I was using my DeuS2 WS6 running in the "old" 0.71 version but honestly I dont really need to update as 0.71 works very well for me and as I dont need sophisticated settings

    I only found 1st WW trash during the first part of the outing . However as I was going to leave I heard a very clean medium signal which was a very nice medieval silver coin . Very nice find ... This is a feudal coin which is much more difficult to id than a royal type because there are so many existing types . It is dating from between 14 to 16th century I think .. May be a foreign coin

    Anyway happy with this very old coin coming back from the past ..  A few pics :

    You can use a true 9.6v 230mAh battery in your Pro-Find to bring it up to 2.2WH, a good battery doesn't make a good pin pointer though 🙂 I'm still on my first ever battery in my Pro-Find 35, plenty of juice left in it yet, in saying that its hours of use a pretty low.

    Ok for the 9,6 X 230 thx .

    I like the Profind 35 and its iron disc , but several times I have had issues with the 9V battery going off in the field . Never had such an issue with the Quest Xmax with its embedded Li on battery which lasts much longer,  with a very low discharge rate when not used compared to the Ni MH . Actually I was never confident with the Profind 35 battery system , this is the only reason why I changed for the Quest .

    I dont like the 9V battery connectors too , they are outdated to my opinion .   For me it is just far more friendly to recharge a device using an USB cable like on all of our smartphones for example  .

  11. Thx,  then to summarize   :

    - ML profind  :

    1 X 9V NiMh rechargeable Energizer  175mAh X 9V     --> capacity  1,6WH

    - Teknetics Tekpoint :
        2
     X AA NiMh rechargeable Lekium  2100mAh X 1,2V   --> capacity   2,5WH

    - Sphinx 03

    Li ion embedded battery                   720mAh X 3,7V    --> capacity  2,7 WH

    You are considering the current consumption of two different products using different physical principles for determining metal (+ discrimination for ML, this is also consumption, I think. The second one you are considering does not have this function). It cannot be the same.
    Users don't usually go that deep (although what we're discussing is very simple) and manufacturers usually don't write uptime because it's a very slippery term with many inputs and there's sure to be someone who will calculate otherwise. Remember how in the 80-90s they wrote power in Watts on tape recorders or how the Chinese now write the capacity of rechargeable batteries)

    Definitely, if the capacity of the AA current source is 4 times higher (a good 9V alkaline battery has a capacity of 500 mA), then it is likely that the device with AA cells will last longer.
    The question is how well it will work for a long time :)

    Our conversation is about the 9V battery and not about the SPHINX. Pardon

    I dont understand why you dont answer to the Sphinx li ion battery capacity question ... Look for example at the smartphones tech specs , the battery specs are always indicated , this whatever the brand ; Samsung , Apple , etc  ...    or look at the computers specs ... or look at the electric cars specs ...

    This battery capacity info is important because it helps the user/ customer to have an idea about the product autonomy ; either a smartphone , or a smartphone , or a car ..

    Yes, the Energizer Lithium 9v batteries work quite well in the Carrot and significantly extend the run time. They also have a higher nominal voltage (9.2v) compared to a Duracell which is slightly below 9v even when brand new. However, they are very expensive and the case is slightly larger than standard. Therefore, they will not fit in all of my pinpointers such as the Minelab Pro-Find 35.

    I agree Energizer Lithium 9v are excellent batteries but they are very ( too ? ) expensive knowing that they re not rechargeable

    You estimate the size of a tank of gasoline, but do not take into account the consumption of gasoline per 100 km (current consumption). After all, for you, as a user, the main thing is how long you can not charge your battery (to drive to a gas station) and what is very important (you forgot when you last charged the battery) to correctly indicate the battery discharge in advance so as not to find a discharged pinpointer in the morning before trip.
    I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying it's not the whole truth.

    I was assuming that the electronic consumption is the same between the 2 pinpointers . Unless the ML consumes far less than the others , but I dont believe to miracles ... 🙂

    To summarize , with a similar consumption between 2 pinpointers , the one with 2 AAs should last 50% more than the one with a single 9V

    Btw as it seems you are the designer of the Sphinx , for info what is the capacity of the Lion battery that you re using with this pinpointer ? thx

  15. 3 hours ago, pavelka72 said:

    Why is it good you said, compact, affordable, but its capacity has remained in the last century, if you are for reliability - it suits you.

    For example ;

    - ML profind 35 :

    1 X 9V NiMh rechargeable Energizer  175mAh X 9V     --> capacity  1,6WH

    - Teknetics Tekpoint :
        2
     X AA NiMh rechargeable Lekium  2100mAh X 1,2V   --> capacity   2,5WH

    Then the Tekpoint with its 2 AAs has 56% more capacity than the Profind with its single 9V battery

    I dont know for pinpointers with embedded li ion battery ( Quest Xpointer Max , XP MI4 MI6 , Sphinx 03 , etc .. ) because their capacity is not indicated on their tech specs , but from my experience with the Quest Xmax they probably have a much more important capacity than a single 9V battery  ..

    Can you get a Sphinx 03 France? deeper discrimination and no 9v battery.

    At the moment I have a Quest Xpointer Max : iron disc and lithium battery , it is an excellent pinpointer,  no need to change for a new one .. Or perhaps for the new version when available

    Apart from this the Sphinx03 is not available in France , at least not available at the main French detector dealer( Maison de la detection - Paris  ) :  Pinpointer - La sélection des meilleurs Pinpointers de détection (maisondeladetection.com)

     I can't explain why it would break like this  ...

    Probably because the plastic used for manufacturing is too fragile ( too brittle ) .

    btw I had a similar issue in the beginnning of the 2000s with an ML explorer XS control box at the connection with the mid shaft . The CB was made with brittle plastic , hopefully the ML after service replaced it with a new one . Now ML uses reinforced plastic on their detectors and this issue does not occur any more  ..

    .. I often see people who do well in tests and I believe they will do the same in real research...

    It is the same for classical detectors , bed tests are interesting but field tests are always the most important  . I remember having tested a few years ago a machine with impressive depth results on my bed tests , however it was unusable in the field because too unstable ...

    xp is a respectable company and I respect them, I have worked with their machines and am happy, I hope they achieve something special with the Xtrem, but time will tell the real value and not the people whose job it is to promote the detector🙂

    Same for me I respect XP for their products , it is a very serious company and I am sure they would not have released the Xtrem if it did not add an  ( or several ) improvement(s) to what is currently existing ...

    When we talk about deep scanning, we are not interested in picking out metals, the rule says that it is deep it must come to the surface.

    gpx may not have the metal discrimination we all dream of, but it does have conductivity discrimination across the depth range, and that for some experienced operators is enough to get information.

    many manufacturers promise great depths and many people who watch videos taken in favorable conditions are convinced by the results, but unfortunately the truth is completely different when you get out there into the unknown.

    I just had a long phone discussion about the Xtrem with my MD dealer in Paris ( who is a friend too ) . He has just received an Xtrem and he will test it during the coming weeks , and will compare it with other deep scanning devices ( Garrett GTI2500 2 boxes , Pulse star PI 1mX1m  ) . This guy is very experienced with deep scanning then this will be very interesting ...

    He thinks that XP has probably significantly improved the 2 boxes ground stability vs older generation models using multifreqs algorithms . He said that XP has improved the 2 boxes ergonomy , the Xtrem is very light ( only 2,9kg ) vs the others . Also it is very compact when it is taken apart into 2 parts ( around 70cms ) and can be stored in a case.

    He told me that it took several years for XP to design and eventually manufacture the Xtrem ..

    I will post as soon as I have more infos ...

    I have written that under the right conditions both 2 boxes and all pi's can penetrate deep but what they can't do is penetrate when the soil changes composition and needs proper soil balance and that is where these machines fall short.
    i can easily locate 85 x 125 sheet metal at 3m depth with the gpx5000-25 NF and i will definitely have the perfect ground balance.

    I am not a deep hunter specialist but XP states that the Xtrem is more stable than the previous 2 boxes generations with its multifrequency and that it has some iron disc capabilities ( while a GPX has almost no iron disc including on small targets near the surface ) .

    Looking fwd for comparative tests ..
