This 1911 US Barber silver dime was recovered yesterday, February 14th 2024. It is a little worn and weighs 2.24 grams. It was 10" deep.

I had my Deus 2 with 13X11" coil and Manticore with 11" coil with me at the time. Both detectors could detect this deep coin. There was aluminum and iron trash very close by this target and I had to remove those targets first just to make sure that this target was legitimate. Even after removing those adjacent shallower targets, the dime still had very "iffy" responses but I had both detectors setup well for high conductor target recovery for the soil conditions at this location. Any repeatable very high tone responses were investigated if they appeared to be deep according to the depth indicators and audio quality on both detectors. Both detectors clearly indicated a possible deep high conductor coin from the audio responses and from their target ID tendencies.

Thanks Jeff .. Then , to summarize :

    5g coin ( conductive metal : silver or copper ) :
    - VLF depth :   10"      ( 25cm )
    - PI    depth :    13-14" ( 33-35cm )

Which confirms a 30-40% depth improvement for a PI vs a VLF , interesting ...

Especially with the new Algoforce E1500 and its TID display , which allows selective searches  ..

I am pondering getting a quest x10 pro.  I currently have a legend. Looking at another one tobhave on hand if so e wants to go with me.  Compared to the Simplex BT how good is the Quest x10 pro?

    Hi ,

I dont know the X10 pro but I have tested the X5 in 2021 which is very similar to the X10 I think .
Here is my report of the X5 ( In French I hope it can be translated  ) :
Test du détecteur de métaux QUEST X5 | DISQUE 24X14 (metaux-detection.fr)

I have also tested a Nokta Simplex  , it was not the last BT version , but they are probably similar too
    TEST - NOKTA SIMPLEX+ DISQUE Circ.28cm - metaux-detection.fr

Compared to the Simplex , the X10/X5 is much lighter ( 990g instead of 1.4kg ) , especially because of its excellent and ultra light Blade 24X14cm coil. The X10/X5 audio is excellent too . The X10 is less expensive than the Nokta too . On the other hand the Simplex goes a little deeper because it has a larger coil, and it has a better shaft ( telescopic ) .

Personnaly if I had to choose between the 2 I would go for an X10 , mainly because its feather weight ,
the Simplex is too front heavy for me. Also because I prefer the Quest audio which is crystal clean and very reactive which is a big plus in iron infested areas  ..

More infos on the Quest X10 pro from a French MD dealer in Paris , Maison de la Detection , with a video :

The ring you observe in the photo, is an ordinary wedding ring that probably because of its thickness, responds with a solid 80.

Forgive my assertion, but this is damning, considering the multitude of coins and leads that fall within those figures.

    ...

I agree , when I started with the D2 I was surprised that the D2's conductivity ID works very differently from my previous detectors ( Deus1 , Equinox , Vanquish540 for example )

As you said the D2 low conductivity range is spread out and the high conductivities are compressed .

For example a schrapnell ( around 10g lead ) IDs 75/99 on the D2 ( at the right side of the scale ) where it says 17/40 on a Vanquish 540 ( at the middle of the scale ) , see pics below  ...

I have been a little disturbed by this at the beginning , now I am used to it ,
but I would have preferred less compressed high conductivities on the D2 ...

@phrunt I haven't been able to find the Target ID font size on the 2.7" LCD screen, which seems very busy. The Manticore Target ID is great! Can you clearly see the Target ID while standing or do you need to bend over? Is it possible to  increase font size on the LCD? Some of us older guys have problems reading the "fine print" on today's packaging.😂

Thats why I was asking for an audio multitone LOL ... 🙂

..  A change they could make in a new firmware update I think is a separate volume control for the pinpoint mode, that'd be a nice thing to have so I will suggest that to them.  (I contacted Algoforce about having an Independant pinpoint volume and it is coming in a new firmware update very soon)

Thanks Simon for the very interesting videos ..

Concerning the firmware changes perhaps a pinpoint multitone would be a good idea , 5 tones for example ( 0-20-40-60-80-99 ) , so that when the pinpoint is activated the user hears the target conductivity without having to look at the screen . I am not a gold prospector but for coin shooting it would be useful ..

An other thing , concerning the 1st vid ( 2 nails , video at 5mn ) I noticed that the nails IDs are unstable , may be it is a way to identify them because the non ferrous targets IDs seem to be much more stable

This was my first target under the lines, unfortunately just a little bit of wire, but a demonstration of how it works under them with a target.

The little bit of wire you found in the video shows TID 10-12  . I wonder how much bigger irons would ID ..  Vs small and big coins .  Just to know if the E1500 can discriminate coins vs irons , the 1000$ question ... 🙂

.. I really like the Algoforce, it's an incredible detector for the price, a real game changer for people that don't need the absolute best of the best yet still want a very high-performance PI machine with cool features and at a very cheap price.  The more I use it the more I like it. I really hope I'm the first paying customer to find gold with the detector, that'd be pretty cool.

Thanks Simon for the stories , pics and videos , looks like you have a future best seller with this E1500 ..

.....Alain, you are definitely using a test box that already has a moderate degree of mineralization... and therefore your results will be 20 or maybe even 25 percent less than it would be in the case of a test box with pure silica sand..
This only indicates how the depth of detection can change in a different type of terrain...

Pure silica sands : do you often have these "sandy "conditions in Slovaquia ?

I know that in the south east of Poland they have a lot of sandy areas because I have been several times there . This is not the case over here in the North of France where we rather have moderately to mid mineralized areas ..

When we tested  various VLF detectors for a small 18.5 mm -3.2 gram nickel coin in a very light forest terain /mainly sand terain/...

the total detection range of the various detectors was from 26 cm as the weakest result, for other good detectors on 9" coils, 11-13" coils the detection range was somewhere at the level of 29-30-32 cm depth of detection..but they are almost an ideal detection environment from the point of view of depth of detection..

3.2 gr is a little coin , on my tests which use a little mineralized soil my results are rather 20 to 23cms depth on such a coin and I have tested  a lot of detectors too ..  Only a 10g coin would be detected at 30cm on my bed tests .

You probably have an extremely low mineralized soil at your test location

  10. Yes thank you Jeff for this excellent test.  It shows that a PI can detect a 5g coin with a no doubt response at say 13-14" ( 33-35cm ) depth in a mineralized soil.

I wonder what would have been the results for the same coin in mild soil ..  I suppose they would have been similar to yours in mineralized soil  : 33-35cm which is much deeper than what can do a VLF ( 10"  25cm max for a 5g coin in mild soil from my measurements  )   , which means 40% deeper  .. without iron disc of course

I really think this wireless stuff for coils is more trouble than it's worth, I understand some love it, but it's not for me.

Actually I am not a great fan of the HF lower shaft integrated battery system . The connector is tiny and fragile , the small cable is fragile too and exposed to shocks at the coil connection level .

I wonder who had the idea at XP to introduce a wired technology into a wireless system , not a good idea to my opinion ... 🙂

I largely prefer the other XP coils where the battery is "simply" integrated into the coil . No cable , which means no cable or connector issues ... Simpler is always better .  They are rock solid and more reliable than the HF coils, even if I have never had an issue with the HFs ..

  12. Hopefully there are more clever people in other countries administrations like in England where there is a partnership called the "Treasure Act" between the detectorists and the archaelogists . The detectorists declare their finds which are studied by archaelogists . If a find is declared as the treasure by the archaelogists it can be bought by a museum and the detectorist receives a payment . If the find is not a treasure it can be kept by the detectorist.

Hundreds of finds are declared annually by the detectorists in England thanks to the Treasure Act .

In France the situation is similar to Australia and nothing is declared because the French detectorists know that they will have pbs if they declare ( this has occured several times ) , this even if metal detecting is authorized in France ( except on listed sites of course ) ...

Conclusion : Who is the winner for a better history knowledge   ?  England or Australia-France ?   That is the question ... 🙂

.. Because... it had a 12cm concentric coil on an ATREX/ALTER71, it passed the Monte Nailboar Test perfectly... and also showed excellent unmasking of targets... and it brought more beautiful coins. in a field. which was previously heavily traversed by various detectors and coils... decided I tested this coil again on some difficult separation test that would confirm or disprove its excellent 2D and 2.5D separation properties ..but also with the help of such a test I found the optimal detector setting for this type of separation for the given coil....

The difficulty of my "Iron Carpet" test is really extremely high.. but it will really show whether the tested detector and coil have any advantage in unmasking..

    Thanks Slavomir ...

Very interesting post . Up to now I havent found a reliable separation board test for my local ( and difficult ) conditions and I am still searching 🙂... .  I do have reliable bed tests for pure depth assessments but still not for separation ..

Yes your test is very difficult,  but however no matter the difficulty as long as it is reliable to show the ability ( or not ) of a detector/coil to work in the field in real conditions  ...

The main difference between your test and Monte board test is the use of a lot of small bits of iron instead of a few big ones. My be this is the key to simulate our local environments , which probably contain much more small bits of iron than bigger ones , especially in open fields where the big ones have been broken by plough and tractors ..

It is a very good idea , I will make one as soon as I have some time available and let you know how it goes ...

Have you tried this test with other detectors/ coils btw ?    thx

I'll start by saying that I've never used a Deus 1. I own the Deus 2 since it came out on the market, before the updates I heard a lot of complaints about the full tones not working like on the Deus 1 etc.... I never tried them until they updated by adding offset for full tones...  Reading here and there I got the idea that the full tones on the Deus would have been the trump card when it comes to separation in environments polluted by iron and more, offering the richest sound identification that XP has implemented.I've never even used negative discrimination -6.4 I've never understood the meaning of it... So I ask you if full tones are actually the best choice when hunting in iron-infested sites and if combining full tones with negative discrimination in these environments where unmasking targets is the priority, can really raise the "performance" of Deus 2.I have very mild soils and the only annoying mineralization in some fields is the massive presence of ancient bricks, I don't consider myself an expert in XP detectors but after more than 500 hours of use I didn't understand when and why to use full tones and negative discrimination

Personnaly I use SENSITIVE, 5 tones , HSQ audio . I dont use full tones because it introduces a kind of pitch audio different from the "straight" 5 tones audio and I dont like the pitch audio.

Of course the audio is a very personal choice , for example some prefer PWM where others prefer SQ or HSQ etc ...

5 tones works very well for me in France where we have iron infested areas almost everywhere ...  I dont modify the other  parameters ( discri , negative discri etc .. ) because I am happy with the SENSITIVE factory settings and I like simple things .. And it is very easy for me to reprogram my D2 if I loose my customization for any reason ..

Rutus 12cm/4.75"/ small concentric coil for Rutus detectors ATREX/ALTER71 is one of the coils that I would like to see also for the Rutus VERSA detector....

The 2D unmasking capabilities are amazing...
I did a really difficult amplified Nailbord Test. - "Carpet of Nails"..where detectors on larger coils will only fight with iron signals..

    Hi Slavomir ,

Have you tried your Orx on this nails carpet test  ?  For me the XPs have one of the best separation abilities and I am curious to know how they perform on this test ... Thx ...

Anyway, I'm not regretting one single bit the €1500 ($1630) price tag on the detector because it's a more capable detector than the €700 euro costing Legend and I'm sure I'll have a lot of fun detecting with it.

A very interesting post thanks HerrUU ...  I think you were simply unlucky with your D2 issues . I have used several WS4s with the D1 since 2013 and now a WS6 and I have only had a few minor issues like changing the headphones batteries , and always at least after 2 or 3 years of use ..

Concerning the D2 high price at 1600E , notice that the D2 starts at around 800E with the WS6 master version which has exactly the same performances than the "full" version , with almost all its settings . Personally I dont need the RC for inland hunting, but I understand that other users must buy one , for example beach hunters  ..

I agree that the D2 is a sophisticated machine with more than 10 detecting modes and a lot of settings , it is rather a detector for experimented users . I would not recommend it for a beginner unless he can be helped/trained by an experimented user..

Le bonjour de Soissons , France , btw  🙂..

  17. Thanks a lot F350 , no youre not misunderstanding my question , everyone is welcome to answer ..

If I understand well the 13X11 goes deeper than the 11 . Then I might have a try with it and see how it goes ... My only concern is its weight ( 570g ), but I will use it only during short outings on small areas and swap to the 9 when I am tired ...

I just remembered a previous thread  Thoughts On The 13x11 Coil? - Page 3 - XP Deus II Forum - DetectorProspector.com , very interesting ...
