I recomend you get nothing bigger than a 200 power. Bigger than that they get too hard to focus and you lose depth of field. Dave

I got out for a couple of hour detect this morning and came across this thing. There was no other rubbish around, it was there all on its own. I have no doubt it`s worthless but I don`t think I`ve seen one before.  Anybody know what it might be?

hey Goldgetter. My understanding of it is, and I`m certainly no expert, on a 11" DD, the transmit and receive windings are approx 11 by 5½" each.   On a 18" DD the transmit and receive are 18 x 9½" each. Because in the bigger coil the windings are wider, like in a bigger mono coil, the bigger coil will go deeper but wont be as hot on the small stuff.   Dave

To take photos of the small stuff, and unfortunately that`s mostly what I find, I use a USB microscope.   If you get one. dont get a 800 or 1000 power. they`re too hard to focus and their depth of field is very small. I took that photo with a 200 power. My `scope only cost 13 bucks but here`s one I found on ebay for 15. Dave

I discovered a week or so ago that the American one dime is 7½% smaller than the Australian five cents I normally use, so I bought one on ebay. I think a couple of bucks is a small price to pay to get bigger gold.  Here is some pieces I got on my last outings.   They`re way bigger now.

Hey tvanwho. Yeh oxygen levels drop off pretty dramatically the higher you go.   At 5000 feet, instead of 20.8% oxygen, there is only 17.3%.    I am not asthmatic but for over 30 years I was a very heavy smoker and I reckon, today if I was to do strenuous activity at 5000 ft it would knock me around as well.   When I was about 35, at the height of my smoking, in the middle of winter, I got to the top of MT Kosciuszko (7310 ft) and it damn near killed me.       I have no idea how you would train up to work at altitude but I think the older you get the harder it will be.    Dave

Hey Ramis.   I have not used either coil, but when I had the 5000 I had the 18" Goldstalker and it was very stable.   For what it`s worth, I was told about a bunch of tests that were done on a test bed here in Victoria, and apparently, for out right depth, the 22" Goldstalker beat everything including the 25" Nugget Finder.  I wasn`t there, I didn`t witness the tests, but that`s what I was told.     Dave

hey Ramis.   If it is a IRON OXIDE mine there might be gold and silver in it.  Here in Australia there is a iron oxide mine called Olympic Dam, which apparently, is the biggest uranium reserve in the world. According to wikipedia there is reserves of 2.95 billion tonnes of ore grading 1.2% copper, 0.04% uranium, .5 g/t of gold and 6 g/t of silver.    If I am doing the figures right, that means the gold reservers are approx 47 million ounces and the silver reserves are approx 569 million ounces.
  But here is the problem, it is not economically viable to mine the gold and silver and the only reason they are pulling the stuff out of the ground is to get at the uranium and copper.  Uranium and copper produce 95% of the mines income.  Gold and silver are a by product.

Hey Doc.  Gold silver and copper are all very good electrical conductors because of their atomic structure, in a individual atom they all only have one electron in their outer orbit.   Lead has four electrons in it`s outer orbit and doesn`t conduct electricity as well as the other three.  Here is a description I found for why different materials are used "Conductivity refers to the ability of a material to transmit energy. There are different types of conductivity, including electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and acoustical conductivity. The most electrically conductive element is silver, followed by copper and gold. Silver also has the highest thermal conductivity of any element and the highest light reflectance. Although it is the best conductor, copper and gold are used more often in electrical applications because copper is less expensive and gold has a much higher corrosion resistance"

Another thing that sometimes helps is re balance your detector on the dirt that came out of the hole.   Sometimes when you do that the signal in the hole will completely disappear. Dave

What I don`t know about looking for coins and relics from the Eastern Roman Empire would easily fill a encyclopedia, but I think you would be much better off with the GPX5000. The GPZ7000 has no discrimination what so ever so you would have to dig every target, be it a nail or a piece of wire or whatever. But with the 5000 you can run a DD coil and use discrimination to eliminate the real rubbishy signals.

As detecting goes, 2017 was not kind to me. Probably the worst year I`ve had since I moved to the gold fields.  My best year was the first year I bought the GPX5000.  I put in a pretty big effort last year with the 19" coil for very little result but I intend to use it a fair bit again this year.  I don`t do this for the money and I would really like to find a big deep bit.   Any way here is some of the gold I found in 2017.   I hope we all find more gold in 2018

Mate just throwing this out there.  The 7000 was released in Australia on 23rd Feb 2015.   Unless Minelab have specified that the WM12 only has 12 months warranty, your WM12 still has at least one month of warranty.  It sounds to me like you have a dud WM12.   I hope you get it sorted. Dave

Mate I`ve not used one but when I had a 5000 I thought my 24x12 UFO was a terrific coil.  With the good things I hear about the Evolution coils I rekon in the right ground you are going to get excellent coverage and depth and you`ll still ping the point oner`s on the toe and heel .    To use the 24x12 you need open ground, but I think it would be a killer coil.    Dave
