That 899 USD translates to about 1100 bucks here in Australia.     I didn`t think I wanted another detector, but now I`m not so sure

Hey Trevor. I contacted you a few times with coil issues and always appreciated your prompt and courteous attention.     But the UFO?
Before I got the 7000, the ufo was my favourite coil, it worked a treat on the 5000. A couple of years before the 7000, I modified mine to get the balance back to the centre of the coil.   Only 3 weeks ago I lent my UFO to a mate to use in a big open area he`s on to with his 4500.  cheers Dave

Hey Swegin.   Like I said mate, to get to this type of transformation takes several months. I drop them in acid and then forget about them,     And another thing, once they have been dropped in acid you can`t un drop them. Years ago I ruined the look of several pieces because I acid cleaned them. I`ve got some pieces that will never go in acid. cheers Dave

I recently used the "after" picture in another thread, but while I was looking for the after picture I also found the "before" picture.  The product I use is Ali Brite.  I have no idea if it is available in the States but it is described as a "etching type acid".    Be careful with the stuff, above all, don`t get it in your eyes, and if it comes in a plastic bottle, use a plastic container to soak your speci`s in.  And you have got to be patient, I left these pieces in acid for several months.

I went to a spot in Tarnagulla today where years ago I got a deep 5 grammer with the 5000. I keep telling my self "if there was one deep bit there there HAS to be more".   Because today I was going after deep gold I strapped on the 19" coil and I got this little piece at about 3". In the second picture, the 2 bottom pieces are the 5 grammer I got years ago and I have no idea if I broke it or if it broke a million years ago.  Todays piece goes a whopping 0.21g.  I think that`s a pretty good score with the 19" coil.    I would have liked to stay out longer because I was really enjoying the day, but at about the 4 or 5 hr mark the 19`s weight really starts to tell on me.

Mate the very good thing about the 19" coil is it doesn`t hear the hot rocks. I nearly always use "normal" when I am running the 19", but from what you have described of your location and the gold you are getting and the depth of the gold you are getting, in my opinion you will gain no advantage what so ever with the 19" coil.  All the best, hope you find heaps. cheers Dave

hey JW.   Yeh mate the 7000 and 2300 can hear it no probs at about 6-7", but I found this piece way before either of those detectors were a glimmer in Minelabs eye.

yeh mate I went back to that spot with every detector I owned after that up to the GPX4000 and never found another piece of gold there, and I`ll keep it as I found it because once you drop them in acid you can`t un drop them.

Around the time the Minelab Eureka Ace Dual came out I found this piece near Sofala in New South Wales with a Whites GoldMaster.   Neither my Minelab 16000 ground tracker or the Eureka Ace Dual can hear it and a GPX5000 with the new coils can`t hear it, but the 5000 with the 8" Commander can hear it at about 1".  It sg`s at 13 grams gold but I`ve never believed there`s 13 grams in it.  Most of the little pieces around it are connected electrically. cheers  Dave

What deutran says there is spot on.  The 2300 shines on certain types of gold and leaves a GPX for dead.  This piece I got a few months ago with the 7000 at about 5", but the 2300 can get it at about 6 or 7 inches and a 5000 with the new flat wound coil can get it at 2" max. But for going for solid bits of gold I would use a 5000 over a 2300 all day every day.    The big thing about the 2300 is you`ll find gold with it just about every time you use it. Dave

Fred I know you didn`t ask this but, a few months ago I bought a couple of ferrite rings on ebay for 2.68 AUD, and Minelab say in their blurb on the ferrite ring, they recomend you use their one, but the real deal and the cheapy both seem do the same thing.  If I can hear one, I hear the other, and if I tune out one, it tunes out the other.   I still use the Minelab one, because it`s the Minelab one, but the cheapy seems to me to do exactly the same thing. Hey Fred.  The 19" coil is the first coil I haven`t glued the lexan directly onto the coil. It was my intention to remove the original and slap the lexan directly onto the coil, but when I saw the pottings were exposed on the coil I glued the stuff to the original, so I`ve got the weight of the original skid plate plus the Lexan, but as you have pointed out the coil is so heavy anyway, I think the increased weight is three fifths of five eighths of not much.      I think Norvic could be onto something about the increased stability of the coil as well.   My coil is not bump sensitive and neither is Norvics, but some people have reported their 19" coil is bump sensitive.  I`ve got 1mm but Norvic says 0.8mm, so if you can get 0.8mm that`s even better. Hey JW. mate I`d like to say that getting this piece was one of the most incredible pieces of detecting that has ever occurred, I was one with the detector, it was just the tiniest change in the threshold and I wondered if I was imagining it, the ground was rock hard and it took me 15 mins to get to it.... but the truth is, it was about 3" down, gave off a signal as big as a bucket, and I recon just about any detector or coil on the planet would have got it 

It`s been pretty lousy weather here for the last few days, but I got out for a couple of hours today.  This is my biggest piece in about 6 weeks and is my very first piece this year with the 19" coil    2.1 grams. Dave

I was going through a couple of folders on my computer to see what was in them and came across this 72 page PDF. Apparently Thomas Jefferson Hurley in 1900 was a member of American Institute of Mining Engineers  and  American Geographical Society.
The quick look I had at it, it looks like it mainly deals with gold found in the USA, so it may be of some interest to people in the States.  I did a very quick google search to see if I could spot this PDF and didn`t find it, so I have uploaded it into the cloud and if you want a copy, be my guest. For a few years now I have been fascinated with a map that was published in 1915, but this map is very hard to work with, because most of the roads that are on it no longer exist and there is no sign of them what so ever and most of the tracks that are currently there are not on the map.    It took me a bit of mucking around to get 2 maps the same size and location, but I found a free site where you can overlay one image onto another.  This is part of the original map that shows roads that are no longer there and the bottom map I have overlayed the original to put in the tracks that are currently there from a topographic map.   This map now becomes way more user friendly for me because of the overlayed tracks.
