  1. I am just guessing here, but I can't imagine the coils are reporting stereo encoded signals to the control pod, so I would surmise that the audio signal to the headphones is dual mono. In that case it shouldn't matter which way you wear them. Try them (the headphones) on a test target and then flip them around. You'll be able to tell if it's a stereo signal because each ear will sound slightly, but noticeably different. If there's no change in sound, they are dual mono and can be worn whichever way you want.

As a side note, imagine how much more accurate detecting and pinpointing would be if detectors reported stereo infomation from the coil. You would be able to tell which side of the coil the target was on and zero in on it with precision. 😎

  2. Just a quick follow up on this...

About a month ago I posted a question asking which would be a good "starter" detector because my wife had expressed an interest in detecting. I needed something easy to use, good quality, and lightweight. The overwhelming response recommended a Vanquish model, so I bought a gently used V540 with 12" coil from a nice member here and got an 8" coil and other essential accessories for her birthday. I figured if she didn't take to detecting, at least I'd have a nice backup to my Nox.

I tested the 540 after it arrived to check it out and I must say, I was quite impressed. It hit deep coins and separated good targets from iron in my highly mineralized soil very well. It's a great turn on & go detector. So I cleaned it up and wrapped it all up for her birthday.

We finally got to go out detecting Sunday before last and after a quick rundown of the basics, I set her loose. After a little over an hour of finding mostly old trash I hear a yell from across the field. I look up and my wife is holding something up that has a familiar glint in the sun. She hit a ring on her very first time detecting! It turned out to be Titanium, but a ring is a ring and now she's hooked on it. She loves her Vanquish so now it looks like I have to look for another backup machine.

Here's my park/school gear.  (I was feeling guilty for it not being minimalist but then I saw CPT_Ghostlight's post.  😉)

LOL, I tried going with just a screw driver for a day, but after running back to the car every few minutes for another tool, I decided that wasn't going to cut it. Then I went full assault pack, but that got me some funny looks, so I got the smallest pack I could find (6"x5") and crammed eveything into that. No weird looks since then. I just look like the eccentric old guy in the park with the weird waterbottle holder and funny looking walking stick! 😄

  4. Here's my Park Pack. I prefer a shoulder sling bag because belt rigs tend to slide off me after a while. 😬

I carry a water bottle, roll-up dump bag for trash, a small tackle box for good finds, probe, modified weed puller, a towel and knife and bulb shovel (in case I need to make a slit in the grass to dig a deep target), a small flashlight, and my F-Pulse pinpointer and Cache Pro Elite pinpointer (to discriminate deep iron targets). It's a small, light rig that doesn't scare park goers or parks dept. personel. 🙂

Regardless, I’m pleased mine is finally on the way, and hopefully their production is genuinely starting to catch up to their rather optimistic delay estimates.

I think they may be starting to roll into the US. A friend of mine, who ordered it in March, received his this past weekend.

    👍

  6. Thank you all for your very informative input. I think I've decided on the Vanquish 540 and since I'm use to the Equinox, it will make it easier for me to get her going in our mineralized soil. There are several dealers selling a 540 Pro Pack that includes the V12 & V8 coils and ML80 wireless headphones for the same price as the Apex, a little less than the ORX, and a little more than the Simplex+, so that just makes sense to me. Plus, if she doesn't like metal detecting, I'll have a nice back-up for the Nox. 😉 Thank you all again for your time and help!

  7. My wife has expressed an interest in getting into metal detecting and I'm trying to decide which would be better to start out on. She is at retirement age, like me, but small framed (short and sweet). Detector weight is a consideration and she has never detected before, so easy to use and light would be best. Would the Vanquish 540, Apex, or Simplex+ be a better choice? Which would you recommend and why? Thanks!
