I paid postage from me to Detector Center Minelab Repair.....I just used USPS Priority Mail for around $20 US.

Detector Center are paying for the postage back to me using the same USPS Priority Mail method.

So the repair cost me $20 in postage and I was without my GPX 6000 for about 2 weeks.........no big deal for me and well worth it hopefully.

Did you send it Priority mail with or without insurance? I swore never to end anything of value through USPS again since having my package of gold and platinum stolen by a USPS employee and they didn't cover my loss even with insurance...

Minelab's US site finally put the fix online, it's under the newly added "updates" tab on the 6000 page: https://www.minelab.com/usa/metal-detectors/gpx-6000 (I can't link to the updates tab directly, you'll have to click the tab)

So in case anyone was waiting to see if it was legit, or officially sanctioned, or whatever...it is. I think it's hilarious they still say "infrequent cases" though, as if it doesn't affect almost every 6000 out there built up until Sept or whenever.

Hopefully they pushed the update to rest of the world now too.

    Thanks Jason for the info!

I don't know how many large or larger nuggets I've missed over the years.  I don't know what I don't know.  No one has told me 'You missed this one!'

I think it's more about digging down and not retrieving the target. Then leaving with that little thought about "what if?"

Hey Tom, I'm not sure, but it sounds like Matt maybe referring to your area.

You are correct! I guess Tom doesn't remember I told him my family settled his area in the mid 1800's and we own several ranches in the location of an early Spanish/ Mexican settlement that was later land granted to my great, great, great grandfather. It's been a couple years since Tom and I discussed the location I'm referring to. One of the others ranches could be the site of an old stage stop and saloon.

Either way, great finds for both of you. Congrats!

That's a story I can identify with. I have left targets like that, and literally had them bug me for a year. In two cases in particular, I dug them both a year later, and both were cans. Both were in places nuggets weighing over a pound had been dug, and I just knew I may have left the big one. Not. But yeah, what you are describing does happen, and is another reason not to leave certain targets behind. the ones we know we should dig, but don't for some reason. In my case both times, I was at end of day and worn out. Both were in remote Alaska locations, which is why it took a year to get back to them.

Anybody that detects for nuggets most likely have at one time or another left a target in the ground for trash. I remember digging on a target in a location where very large gold had been found. I was over a foot deep in hard dry dirt. It was a hot day and toward the end of my hunt. It just sounded like trash so I left it.

Once back at home, that's all I could think about! The next day, I left work early and went beck. Glad I did because another 3 or 4 inches was a nice specimen that had over an ounce of gold in it! I never left another target unchecked and recovered many multi ounce pieces. That was an eye opening learning experience to say the least.

  6. I always just have the attitude that I am better and more thorough at detecting than others. Most beaches are public and when people go in with the assumption that the other guy already found all the good stuff then it's a waste of time for them to be there. A positive attitude makes a big difference.

I ended up sending 2 day USPS, they told me since it was past 10am that 1 day and 2 day both get there Saturday so just do 2 day instead. It was like $50. Someone did pick it up Saturday at Detector Center. I didn't send with any but the included basic insurance. I'd fight that fight if it got lost.

I would be very careful sending via USPS. Earlier this year, I sent El Dorado 3/4 of an ounce of small pickers and my Platinum wedding band. I hired him make me an exact replica of my plat band with gold I found. He made it sent it back with the remaining gold. Insured it for $2k, but it was actually value of $4k. We had a bunch of pictures of everything.

Package disappeared in the USPS distribution center in North Carolina. It's a long story and I finally received the package empty of all contents with the USPS admitting it was in their possession when the contents were removed. Filed a claim. Denied. Filed 2 appeals to the highest level. Denied. Only option left is to hire a lawyer, but that will cost more than $4k. Found out it's very common for packages with insurance to disappear. It has been a nightmare to deal with.

From now on I will only ship via fedex. Going through this ordeal I learned that UPS does not have good claims either and I was told by a local jeweler that they only use fedex due to theft and insurance.

You know, as I wrote that first post I rechecked my email inbox and just saw that I received a reply back from the AU Service Center. So my detector is in the affected lot and needs the mod. They said they’d confirm when I could get it repaired and get back to me with information about how and when I can send it to their US service center.
That’s a great start, and they’ve always been very good whenever I’ve sent them a question.

You contacted the Australia Service Center and not the US Service Center?

Eventually I'll probably sell it but since I have yet to sell any tokens, I don't know their value.  Do you know of a site or group who specializes in early California mining memorabilia?  Thanks for the input.

I would think the museum in Downieville would be the best place for that token. Not sure how much they would give you for it, but I would be willing to pitch in seeing that it belongs there.

Have you heard of bear boards? They used them up in Alaska--cut strips of plywood and use a nail gun to stud the strips with lots of nails, place the bear boards around anywhere you don't want the bear to go. Electric fences can work too.

I have used bear boards for years in the sierra's. They work great, but have to make sure and paint them bright orange so if somebody accidentally comes through they are visible.
