WesD & jason - I don't think at all the pursuit of.. and or gold itself is a waste of investment.  It's an occasional detector purchase, outdoor breathing, free exercise and workout, comradery with your friends who enjoy doing the same thing.  The gold we find has value...if we decide to sell it.  It has memories of the trips and adventures in trying to collect it.  No matter what country you find yourself in, an few grams of gold is supplies, food...life.

As a hobby, I have fished, hunted, bowling, archery, coin detecting.  I did all those for 40+ yrs and for many of the same reasons I mentioned above.  Only the coins/artifacts of detecting have a value I can sell today and get cash.  In the last 20 yrs, I have found 100X more value I can cash than even my only coins, in half the time.

I feel nugget hunting has been the best investment for all the hobbies I have ever done and the returns are worth more than all the others combined.

No, it's not like real-estate, the stock market for most people but those require the person to have a good chunk of change to get involved, for the average individual.

Yes my property has went up in value, just like everyone else.  It took a big chunk of money and a loan and paid interest to get that far.  The average Joe is only going to have 1 or 2 chances of those purchases in a lifetime, when in fact many people can afford the detector and pursuit of gold.  Or we could hang out at the local pub and drink/drink our hard earned wages away and have nothing but a headache in the morning?  I'll stick with detector in hand instead of a beer.

Most of the wealthiest people on earth became rich because of real estate. The best investment you can make is purchasing your first home. Buy the worst house in the best neighborhood you can afford. Sweat equity and paying off debt as quickly as possible can change your life. Once you can live debt free you can...(insert dream here)...the possibilities are endless...

Set high goals for success, beat those goals, have fun doing it.

Heck,  I think my Training Trips and Sessions are going to be obsolete?  We thought that with the GPZ-7000, but still lived on.  Only time will tell.

Training trips and Sessions are not obsolete! I have found gold with every detector I have ever purchased.  Gold doesn't always have to be yellow...finding great people to share a common passion with can be worth more than the value of gold.

  3. Damn I look forward to you new posts!!! I used to have permission to hunt an 1850's and prior era site but didn't care about relics only gold nuggets. It was right in the middle of the gold rush area of California. Now, I wish I would have focused on the old stone homestead houses more! There were a bunch of them and there were a couple nobody knew were even there.

I got out 3 times and was able to snag some decent targets.

This hunt was done at the rocky beach I frequent during winter. There were lots of targets, more than I could dig in one hunt. I got about $8 in clad. The first row is all the good jewelry, one small 14k (.73g), and the rest Silver. The second row of rings are all junkers.

This second hunt netted about $12 in clad and a small/light broken 14k pendant.

The last hunt wasn’t all that great but I somehow managed to get a gold tooth that weighs 3.6g. Thanks for stopping by and Happy Hunting.

I wonder if somebody spread cremated remains and the gold tooth was in it or if it would melt in the process?

What part of CA are you located in now ?

When you get down this direction, drop me a line and we can join up to go over some maps.  And I'll show you what I know, where I've hunted, etc....  Is your family familiar with the late Gary Breschini ?   He was a local archaeologist and historian, who traced his roots back to the Blanco district ranching area.  Which is the area you alluded to, between Salinas to Marina.  We used to pick his brain continuously about places to detect at !   Anyhow, drop me a line when you get down to my area.

Will do. I live in Sacramento, but need to start going down that way more to deal with family business. That would be great to get together some time. Most likely my Mom would know Gary. I guarantee he would have known my family. The old homestead farm is actually on Blanco Road. Also have a ranch on West side of Cooper Road (Blanco area) and then out in Alisal at Old Stage Road. My family were big lettuce farmers.

Sorry to hijack your thread CVISChris!

  6. Tom-Thanks for the response. I'll ask my Mom and Uncle what they remember/ know about things, especially "El Tucho." They spent a lot of time out on the farms with my Grandfather. Some of the growers might have some clues as well. You never know what they see when they are plowing the fields.

Now I just have to get some time to go down there and look around a bit. My Uncle was there yesterday. You are correct about the farm equipment and trash. Where the old homestead was located is now storage for farm equipment. If I can find out anything I'll let you know. Sure would be fun to find some old coins on the family ranches.

Welcome to the elite and exclusive seated coin club.   And my friends and I are green with envy on the buckles.   Those are the sought-after badge of merit in CA G.R. hunter circles.

What part of the central Valley are you in ?  I'm @ the Salinas/Monterey area.  So it takes me a few hours to reach the Sierra foothills G.R. sections.   Envious of you guys that are a tad closer !

Those are some great finds CVISChris! Congrats!

Not to change the dialog, but Tom my family settled the Salinas Valley in 1854. We tore down my great grandfather's house built in the 1880's after the Salinas River flooded in the late 90's. I've been thinking about going out to the old spots my Mom told me about where they used to picnic.

Have you ever had any luck detecting the old farmlands between Salinas and Marina? It's all private property, but I know a few people out that way!

  8. Funny that you ask since my wife asked me also since I'm clearing out a bunch of stuff to get a new one. My answer to her was just a couple. Same answer I give her when she asks how many guns I have.

In reality 12 total in a bit over 20 years of detecting. Now the last 7 years I rarely get the time to go out because of kids and work.

    3 whites and 9 minelabs. Whites DFX and GMT and original TDI. Minelab SD2100 v2, gp3000, gpx4000, gpx4500, gpx5000, SDC2300, GM1000, EQ600, EQ800.

The only ML offering I can honestly say was junk is the GM1000. Owned one for a month and that was a month too long. I was way better off keeping my GB2. So glad I upgraded to the 24K. Cant wait to try the 6000 though!

I don't think the Goldmonster is a piece of junk and actually feel the opposite. My 10 year old (now 13) has been able to use it on his own and find gold. Maybe it's not for you, but it gets me out in the goldfields with my son and we have a great time using it. In trash infested areas he can use the discrimination and kick out gold. The SDC was way to heavy for him. I really enjoy using it the beat the skunk when we go out! It will find gold!

PM's decoupled from paper decades ago. But supply and demand ? Hardly....its price manipulation that has been going on for too long now. Big boys been shutting out the little guys. But now you are just starting to see movement  where the little guys are banding together...as in the short seller's of stocks. This is just the beginning. When I tried to buy silver at that $12-13 level within the last few years , I couldn't. As I'm standing in a shop in front of 1000s of ounces of silver. Not unless I wanted to pay in the $18-19 range. A total scam.... THE PEOPLE ARE FED UP !

The metals markets have been manipulated for a long time. Actually, most commodities have been.  Silver did NOT decouple decades ago. I could buy silver for around spot price a little over a year ago and could sell to my local coin shop for 60-70 cents under spot depending on how much I wanted to sell. It's been that way for several years.

The price of physical metal IS THE PRICE regardless of what the spot price says. It's not like the stores are buying for spot all day long and selling for massive premiums. You should have purchased at $18-$19 (when spot was $14) and you would have doubled your money in regards to today's selling prices for physical metal selling for $34-$37 (spot around $27). Anybody that sells for less than spot in this market should do more research.

The reddit guys moved the market for a couple days and many were millionaires for those couple days. Hopefully some sold when the price was over $400. Most probably rode it to the high and now will ride it back down to the low in hopes it will go back up. Been there done that in late 90's early 2000's tech boom. Yes, the reddit thing was fun to watch for a day but unless you know trading you can lose it all, and then some. I'm fed up too!

Find some gold, have fun doing it and take care!

Nah man I just thought someone else may have the same problem I do with connectivity when I’m off on claims.  I hate having to drive 20 miles to just call the wife.  I’m super stoked about it.

I agree! Can't wait for the service. With no phone landline and no cell service, this provides a way to keep in contact without having to drive for miles. Especially in an emergency!!!

I use the GM1000 when I want to find smaller bits, go headphone free, or not think too much about settings.

I use the EQX800 when I want to have better discrimination, manage heavier mineralization, or tinker with settings.

In the picture, the inner ring are all GM1000 finds from the same area. Outside that includes some GPZ and EQX results.  As a particular experiment, after thoroughly cleaning out an area with the GM, I came back to see what the EQX with the 6 inch coil could scrub up.  A few larger leftovers were simply masked by mineralization that the GM seemed to be struggling with. I chalked those up to the EQX multifrequency magic.

Can someone explain to me what the Minelab logo on these Coiltek coils means?

What settings do you use on the Nox? Standard gold 1 or 2? I'm especially curious about the discrimination part of your settings. I haven't used mine for prospecting yet, but am going to try and get out soon. I have had success with the GM1000 in trashy areas using discrimination so your finds look really good using the Nox.

    Nice finds!
