Have you heard of bear boards? They used them up in Alaska--cut strips of plywood and use a nail gun to stud the strips with lots of nails, place the bear boards around anywhere you don't want the bear to go. Electric fences can work too.

I have used bear boards for years in the sierra's. They work great, but have to make sure and paint them bright orange so if somebody accidentally comes through they are visible.

Retire to Hawaii and hunt for gold rings. Can't get any better than that can it?

That's what I did, but not planning to retire for for at least 4 more years (I am 51) until both kids are in college. Bought a house in Maui a couple years ago. We can walk to town, the grocery store, the hardware store, several dozen restaurants, and a fantastic beach is 900 feet from my front door. Just got back from a 3 night trip last weekend. Got up early and detected 2 different beaches at sunrise. Nothing better than to be in paradise on a beautiful beach alone watching the sun come up. Lots of targets, but it seems like most of the jewelry kids buy these days are not precious metals. I hit 2 engagement rings. One of them I thought was platinum, but once I had my glasses on it read KT316. Stainless steel with fake diamonds. The other was similar, but the plating was wearing off.

Most of the locals are nice people as long as you respect them and their island. I haven't had any problems with them.

I am not sure that wouldn't be possible, based on my design.

Since I'm not a water hunter, let alone a diver, what would you want in a dive shaft?  What would be the requirements?  Just "shorter" in length?

    Steve

Yes, shorter in length. XP is supposedly coming out with one that was reviewed several months ago, but it has been silent about it ever since. I have not been diving with a metal detector yet, but now that this new xp is out and waterproof I plan on diving it.

Probably just a 1 piece shorter shaft.

    Hi all,

    A couple of things...

First of all, I am happy to offer cam locks to anyone interested.  They run $15 plus $5 for USPS First Class shipping.

Secondly, I'm working on a prototype Deus shaft also, and it would be an "S" shaft that would function very similar to the stock XP shaft, but would use round tubes (and my cam locks) instead of the XP "non-round" tubes.  I am ALSO working on that issue of control-box placement, relative to the handle -- as I noted the same issue as Brad did (difficulty in accessing the buttons on the control box with your thumb, because the control box sits too far "in front of" or "toward the user," relative to the handle.  I will be addressing that as well, with my shaft.

Anyway, just wanted to make those two points.  Brad, THANKS for mentioning the use of my cam locks.  I'm really glad it worked well for you!

It would be nice if you could make a deus shaft for underwater diving also.

I checked into this subject of magazine capacity in California with the Sherriffs Dept. The magazine has to be altered to accept no more than 10 rounds.

If a magazine capable of holding more than 10 rounds was owned prior to January 1st, 2000 you can legally own it and possess it in California. In 2019 Federal Judge Benitez ruled against the ban and for 1 week (until the 9th Circuit Court overturned the ruling) Californians were able to purchase magazines that can hold over 10 rounds. It was also ruled by the 9th circuit court that anybody that purchased magazines during that "freedom week" did it legally and can legally possess them.

Crossing state lines into California with a magazine that can hold greater than 10 rounds is illegal.

I am not a lawyer, but this is how I understand the law. Do your own research and follow the law.

Black Point in front of the Sheraton at Kanapalli Beach on Maui.

It gets lots of snorkelers who lose jewelry!

There was a local guy who hits it pretty regularly though.

I hit Black Rock two weeks ago during Spring Break, on New Year's, last Thanksgiving and last summer!

It's actually called Black Rock and it sees thousands of people a week. It also sees metal detectors on the beach and underwater almost every day and night. I have never been there when there is not another person or persons detecting.

There are finds, but you have to be in the right spot at the right time. I like the early morning at sun up before the tourists get there and the beach gets crowded.

We were snorkeling there two weeks ago and my friend saw something sinking right after a girl jumped off the cliff. It was her apple watch and my friend dove down and got it for her. There were a couple guys at new years working the shoreline with snorkels in about 7 feet of water with custom shafts that were really long. I waited for them to get out of the water and tried talking to them but they wouldn't even say hello. Right as they were leaving a guy showed up with scuba tanks and his detector. He was nice and we talked quite a bit. Said he goes out there about once a week.

  7. "The Diary of a 49er" and "Bacon and Beans From a Gold Pan" are both really good books.

Bacon and Beans is a depression era book and written based on the true story of a couple last lost their jobs and moved to the hills to mine for gold. Part of the book takes place in the Northern Motherload region near Downieville. It's a very entertaining read.

The Diary of a 49er takes place outside the town of Nevada City and is probably very similar to your journal. Some have suggested that it was not an actual journal and written later. The Diary was supposedly found in a miners cabin.

They are 12 mm outside diameter, which seems to be an unusual size.

California side of the Sierra Nevada in the low foothills.

The guy I went with has tent camped there at that same spot a number of times with no problem. However there were maybe 35 cows - not just one or two. Yes, getting out was good for mind and body, I have a feel for the area now and I'm looking to return and give it another go. This time I'll be putting up an impromptu tarp tent in the back of my pickup.

Let me know if you want company. I got a new GPX6000 and have yet to turn it on!

Hi, can any U.S.-based D2 users confirm Skullgolddiver's response that the wave guide and antenna are included in the base D2 box? Frustrating, because metaldetector.c** sold me those as additional accessories...

    Thanks

I purchased my Deus 2 from Gerry and it has the the antenna, mounting accessories and the little red plug included in the box. I googled it just to see and I did see that some dealers sell it for around $33.

  10. I had the 6" round coiltek I used on my 4500 and 5000. I used it a few times, but the 14x9 or the platypus (not sure of the dimensions) just kicked butt over it because the tip was so hot and you get so much more coverage I quit using the 6" round. I had a Joey mono too. I can't say enough good things about those small elliptical coils regardless of the manufacturer.

  11. As I stated in another thread recently, the only reason I am getting a Deus ii is for underwater detecting in the ocean unless it proves to be better than my Equinoxes. I was about to pull the trigger on a great priced used excalibur ii from the classified section of this forum when I learned about the Deus ii. It just makes sense for me to get it since it is waterproof. Most underwater detectorists where I hunt use the excal so why not see if the Deus can get targets missed by the excal? Also I don't want to risk submerging my Equinoxes and will most likely continue to use them on the dry sand or coil only submerged in water.
